There are pretty patterns, number patterns, letter patterns, design patterns, lots of patterns :-)

Moreover, patterns are not bound to .NET specifically ; they are common ways to solve specific development problems.

As it has been told, this forum is not a place to enumerate the details, pro's and con's of their usage ; [your favorite internet search engine] is your friend for that, there are plenty of articles on the subject.
