Thank you for this great tool!
During my tests with a WinForms application I found one problem:
When I am starting an automatic translation the program tries to translate the internal properties (>>xyz), although I have disabled to display them in the project properties.
Is this a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks, Thomas.
Seems to be a bug. I will investigate, please stay tuned.
Thanks for reporting!

I've used the Zeta editor for about a day now, and there are some things that annoy me a bit, so I thought I'd post it here (and pray for an updated version! )
*) The resource names are not editable. It would be very nice if it was possible to edit the names of the resources if I've misspelled some of them.
*) The default mode seems to be to remove all resources that don't have a value in any resource file, but only have a key. It's very dangerous to remove stuff for a user - I had entered about a hundred resource keys before starting with Zeta, and they were quickly removed as soon as I pressed the save button.
*) When entering a new key or importing new keys from excel, please trim off any starting/trailing whitespaces, since that causes the resource to be invalid in Visual Studio. Or at least add an option for it.
*) The default should be to make backup of files when changing them, since it the new users that are most likely to make mistakes and thus need the backup.
*) When importing data from excel, with some rows only containing keys (and no values), that data seems to be ignored by Zeta. It should still be imported.
*) When I've imported excel files, I've had issues with the grid in Zeta not updating. I've had to save and then restart Zeta to see the imported lines.
*) When translating, I often need to see my application GUI at the same time so I know what I'm translating. Thus, I usually run Zeta non-maximized. I also have rather long resource keys, so I tend to run out of desktop space when translating. Please make it possible to hide the "Project files"-pane and the "Details View". Or at least allow me to drag the splitter bar much further to the left/down.
*) Choosing not to show News in the "Extras->Options->Show news" seems to have no effect on the news displayed in the bottom left side of the application.
*) Quick translate works fairly ok, but "Translate missing texts" seems to have no effect apart from copying the data between cells without translating it. It would be nice if "Translate missing texts" actually used the translation engine.
*) I'm not sure which version of Zeta I'm using - I just can't find any information about that in the application, but perhaps I'm blind...
Thanks for a good tool, now I'll get back to translating my application.

Thank you very much for using Zeta Resource Editor and for posting your thoughts!

This can be done by right-clicking on the first column of a row in the grid.

This is an option to configure in the project settings. Sorry for rendering your resource files invalid!

Agreed.

I will investigate - Does klicking the "Refresh" button help?

I like the "hide" option. I try to see how it is implemented best.

If you restart the application it should be gone.

Seems to be a bug. I will check and correct it.

You could either look at the properties of the executable in Windows Explorer or press the application icon (the brush) upper left and then choos the "Info" menu item.
Thanks again for your feedback, please give me some more days to check everything, I hope the following weekend is suitable for that!
Cheers

Ah, yes it works for me now. I didn't realize it. I clicked the cell and got a caret, and thus I thought that that was the way to do it.

If you restart the application it should be gone.
If that is the case, add a message box saying that. As it is now, I make the change and nothing happens. Rather confusing. But it's a very minor thing...

Oh, I hadn't even noticed that menu. Perhaps that says something about how some users perceive things.

Hi Uwe,
More issues. The person in charge of localization has noticed that sometimes the program isn't saving resx files that have been modified. They claim that the datestamp of the file has changed, the the contents remain the same. I haven't been able to duplicate yet myself (I'm a developer and found Zeta for them to use to manage our string tables), but just a heads up.
If it matters, we don't use project files because our resx files are named Strings.<locale>.origin.resx . The origin.resx seems to break adding the resx files to a project. This is because we have scripts that brand macros within the string values for customers.
Just a heads up. Thanks for supporting this free project.

Of course I will keep an eye on that from now on!

Hi Uwe,
Another bug I've noticed. Maybe not a bug but more of a feature request. It seems resx files saved by Zeta change the whitespace from spaces to tabs. Is there a way to keep the original white spaces?
/John
|
|
|
|
|
Hi John
You mean the whitespace OUTSIDE the translations; i.e. the one in the genrated XML file, right?!
Currently we do use XmlDocument to write the text back to the file. I recall that there are options to control the generation of the XML document, but I am unable to find them now (was it for XSL-T only?!?).
If there are such options, I could map them to project settings so that you can control by yourself.
Regards
Uwe

|
|
|
|
Hi Uwe,
Yes sorry. I mean outside the translations, that is in the XML formatting.
Well, the Visual Studio generated resx files use spaces as whitespace formatting. Maybe maintaining that as the "standard" would be a good idea? Your solution is fine with me too.
/John

Seems that I forgot a condition to enable/disable the Import/Export menu items.
You can only use the Import/Export functions if you have a project loaded ("*.zreproj").
You still can open resource files without a project but then the Import/Export should not be used.
Am I right with my assumption that you have no loaded project?
If yes, I will adjust the Import/Export menu item enable/disable code.
Thanks
Uwe

Hi Uwe,
Yes that's correct. The .resx files were just opened in Zeta but not in a formal project.
Thanks for staying in touch with your userbase on here!

Thanks, John
I just uploaded a new version that "fixes" the error you saw by disabling the Import/Export feature when no project is loaded.
Sorry for not providing a more generic solution; all the code currently assumes that a project is loaded, so it was the cleanest (and fastest) way to disable the button.
Hope you still find the tool useful!
Thanks
Uwe

Could DataProcessing be enhanced to allow some typed resources to be edited as strings.
Looking at the code I think that only DataProcessing.getTable() would be affected. The following if statement
if ( node.Attributes[@"type"] != null )
{
process = false;
}
would change to something like
//Check if this is a non string data tag
if ( !_allowedTypes.Contains(node.Attributes[@"type"]) )
{
process = false;
}
where _allowedTypes is a List<string> defined and initialized something like the following
static readonly List<string> _allowedTypes;
static DataProcessing()
{
_allowedTypes = new List<string>(;
_allowedTypes.Add(null);
_allowedTypes.Add("System.Windows.Forms.Keys, System.Windows.Forms");
_allowedTypes.Add("System.Drawing.Color, System.Drawing");
}
I realize that this will not validate that the localizations are still correct Key or Color values. However, it will allow us to at least attempt to localize them if necessary. Editing them with actual type checking would be a good feature in the future but is not necessary.
Is there a way that I can get the source code actually building? I would send you a tested patch with all the necessary changes if building is actually possible. At the moment I am missing DevExpress and ZetaEnterpriseLibrary references. I tried just using the ones distributed with the binary package, but that resulted in a whole bunch of errors compiling resource files.

I thought, building _is_ possible. I will use the upcoming weekend to fix bugs reported here and also will look at the possibility to make it build correctly.

Thanks for the quick reply!
I realized that I was not very clear about my issues compiling and running. So, here is a list of what I encountered:
"Unable to create a manifest resource name for "UI\Helper\ObjectInspectorForm.resx". Could not find file 'C:\zre\Main\UI\Helper\ObjectInspectorForm.cs'."
ObjectInspectorForm is not included in the zip file so I removed it from the solution and commented out references to it.
"Invalid Resx file. Type DevExpress.Utils.ImageCollectionStreamer, DevExpress.Utils.v9.1, Version=9.1.4.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b88d1754d700e49a in the data at line 483, position 4 cannot be located. Line 536, position 5."
The ZetaResourceEditor project is missing references to Aspose.Cells, DevExpress.*, log4net, and Zeta.EnterpriseLibrary.*. I modified the reference hint paths to point to
"c:\program files\zeta resource editor" instead of ..\References (which does not exist).
"Could not find file 'C:\zre\Main\Resources\Aspose_Cells_License.txt'. Line 135, position 4."
Yep, it is not there so I removed the SR_Aspose_Cells_License resource and commented out the code that was using it.
"Invalid Resx file. The located assembly's manifest definition does not match the assembly reference. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80131040) Line 536, position 5. c:\zre\Main\UI\Helper\ErrorForm.resx 536"
Removing the PublicKeyToken=b88d1754d700e49a from the assembly reference in the element before the error seems to fix the build error. However, this was too concerning for me to continue. Why does the installed DevExpress assembly not have the same public key token as is referenced in the resx file?

Just uploaded a new version.
I was able to import your files.
Please note that I modified the behaviour of the "Group" column. To successfully import, follow these steps:
1.) Right click the file group in the tree in Zeta Resource Editor (ZRE)
2.) Open the file group's properties (yellow box with pencil icon)
3.) Copy the "check sum" value.
4.) Replace the values in the "Group" column in Excel.
5.) Import with the wizard in ZRE.
Does this work?
