They wrote an extension to the NTFS file system. No, your not going to get away with doing this in VB6. This is something much better handled in C++. In some cases, the files are not stored in the file system like a normal file, but instead, are stored in a hidden file, like a .ZIP file or a mini file system inside the NTFS file system, and this file is managed by the extension you write.
But like I said, don't even think of doing this in VB6.

Hello there,
I would like to know how I can encrypt a folder (NOT a file) without third party interaction.
I am sure it's possible because much encryption software does it.
Your help is greatly appreciated.

This is already handled by NTFS. The contents of the folder is encrypted, not the folder itself.
Once again, it is possible to do in C++. VB6 is seriously outclassed in writing extensions for NTFS.

i am making project on vb.net ..it is network inventory system.. In that i need to access the linux registry using vb.net..so if you have any idea about that than plz reply me ...
thank you...

There is nothing in the .NET BCL to do this. I haven't found any documentation on how to do it either. Also, you would probably be better served asking this question on a Linux board, not VB. Without knowing the ins and outs of the Linux registry, it's impossible to tell you what you have to do.

I am creating a class which uses rsa for encryption and decryption. problem with rsa is that it uses public and private keys which means i also have to store the keys if i want to decrypt something which i don't want. Is there some way to get over this. i know that sha does not require keys but then it only encrypts and you have to match encryption string. Is there a better way to encrypt string and store it and then decrypt it.

There are many different ways of doing something with the general description that you gave. What you end up doing depends greatly on what your requirements really are and what your doing with the encrypted data. I'd suggest reading up on all the Crypto docs starting here[^] to get a good look at the pitfalls and benefits of using these methods.

Hi,
I am partially new to vb.net, but have vb.net standard 2003. I am more interested in microcontroller development, but am working on some software to interface and debug some registers from the microcontrollers RAM.
Using a RS232 connection (with a MsComm wrapper) i am able to get text to and from the controller very easily. But i am not interested in text (ascii) i am interested in the values. So 0x41 sent from the controller appears as a A in the textbox i display it in, but i want to display 0x41.
Any ideas?
I have looked through the help system without too much luck, many thanks in advance.

If you are absolutely sure your input data is all in the form of text ASCII characters, and does not contain binary data, you can convert an ASCII character into it's ASCII integer code, and then convert the integer to Hex format. But the hex will not be in the "0x41" format - you'll just get a "41".
For example:
txtMyTextBox.Text = (Hex(Asc("A")))
will display "41" in the textbox.
The functions will only work with a single character. If you have data in a string you can convert it into an array of characters using the String.ToCharArray function then enumerate each character to convert it to Hex.
Good Luck

Ok thanks thats just what i want, the bytes can only be values from 0x00 to 0xFF which is the range of the extended ASCII dataset i think, so Asc should handle it!

How do you change the size of a font dynamically being read only doesnt help

Fonts are immutable. You need to create a new Font with the desired size.

I have to copy rows from one data view to another.
Fot this am using the following loop and each time creating a new row.
But somehow in the final result the resultatt view only has one new row.
The loop actually runs for each added row but only the last row is actually added.
Any suggestions?
Am copying rows from view2 to view....
For i = 0 To view2.Count - 1
view.AllowNew = True
Dim dv As DataRowView
'adding the new row
dv = view.AddNew()
' copying each column value
For j = 0 To view.Table.Columns.Count - 1
dv(j) = view2.Item(i).Item(j)
Next
dv = nothing
Next
no matter how many times the above loops get executed only the last row is added

Greetings,
I have 2 grids, a master and a detail. When I try to add a new blank
record in the detail, I get a contraint error "column 'PROPID' does not
allow nulls" How can I get the detail record PROPID value to default to the
value of PROPID of the selected recortd in the master grid? Here is a short
sample data structure:
Master Grid:
QAID - int - not null
PROPID - int - identity - not null
ITEMDESC - varchar(50)
Detail Grid:
PROPDETAILID - int - identity - not null
PROPID - int - not null
ITEM AMOUNT, etc, etc.
*As you can see there is a one to many relationship between Master.PROPID
and Detail.PROPID
Thank you for your help in advance!

I am getting stuck on a class that implements IEnumerator for a custom object. Here's the relevent portion of the code:
<br />
class testEnumerator<br />
implements IEnumerator<br />
<br />
private copy() as customObject<br />
private orig() as customObject<br />
private cursor as integer<br />
<br />
public sub new(ByRef v() as customObject)<br />
me.cursor = -1<br />
me.orig = v<br />
me.copy = v.clone<br />
end sub<br />
.<br />
.<br />
.<br />
end class<br />
I am getting hung up where the MoveNext and Reset methods throw errors if the original collection has been modified. What I have right now compares the orig() and copy() arrays to see if there are any differences.
I'm not sure this is correct, though. Does me.orig = v make me.orig a reference to v(), since v was passed ByRef ? Or are orig() and copy() identical copies of the array v() ?
Any help, or alternative methods, would be greatly appreciated.

I want add BCC all ountgoing and incoming emails. How can i do?

I have to ask, why the incredibly long name? Couldn't you just shorten it up to "Greeky Creek" and stop wasting my screen space?
If you want a generic implementation that supports all mail applications, you'll have to write an app as a proxy server. The mail application would then log in to your server, which in turn will impersonate the person using his/her credentials, login to the real mail server, download all mail, go through each message and add the appropriate strings to the message, then return the altered mail to the client mail program.
The same goes for sending mail.

You don't!
You have to write your own proxy server, just like Norton. If you check your email application configuration, you'll notice that it's connecting to your own machine using different ports than the normal POP3 and SMTP. The configuration in Norton is setup to connect to your ISP mail server.
You'll be writing something that does exactly the same thing. Except the configuration of your application will be the same as your email application. This will have your application connect to Norton so it can do it's job. The chain will go something like this:
Your email app configuration:
POP3 -> 127.0.0.1 on port 8001
SMTP -> 127.0.0.1 on port 8005
(or whatever ports you pick)
Your mail modification app listens on these two ports for connectios from your email app:
POP3 -> listen to 127.0.0.1 on port 8001
SMTP -> listen to 127.0.0.1 on port 8005
Your mail modification app will talk to your ISP mail server, in this case, your Norton app on:
POP3 -> talks to 127.0.0.1 on port ???? (whatever Norton is listening on)
SMTP -> talks to 127.0.0.1 on port ???? (whatever Norton is listening on)
Norton listens for connections from mail applications, in this case your modification app, on:
POP3 -> listen to 127.0.0.1 on port ???? (whatever it's configured for)
SMTP -> listen to 127.0.0.1 on port ???? (whatever it's configured for)
Finally, Norton will talk to your ISP mail server on:
POP3 -> talks to pop3.comcast.net on port 110 (or whatever server your ISP uses)
SMTP -> talks to smtp.comcast.net on port 25 (or whatever server your ISP uses)
Essentially, your writing a proxy application that must be both an email server (POP3 and SMTP) and an email client application. There are articles all over the web that discuss and demonstrate both applications independent of each other, but it'll be up to you to figure out how to put them together into one automated application. You'll also what to pickup the RFC documentation on how POP3 and SMTP clients and servers work. You'll need them for this project...
You might want to check out this[^] little artcle on CP for ideas behind a POP3 client. This will be just 1/5th of your application.
