Why in the world would anyone rate such a question a '1'? I managed to avoid the nightmare called Win98, but I use WinXP at work. I have several folders which display thumbnails of the jpg files stored there at all times. I believe that these are set up using the View menu, and selecting the Thumbnail option. It doesn't do the sidebar thing anymore, but all of the pictures are viewable in the main pane on the right.
The sidebar, instead, now offers a nifty slideshow option useful for impressing the Board of Directors with a pictorial exhibition of the workers doing their thing to install new moneymaking equipment for the company - a use I discovered a few weeks ago when I brought along a camera on the day we installed a new transformer in a substation.
This applies only to the Professional version; the Home edition I've seen only a few times, and found it just slightly less usable than DOS.

Turn on the tasks bar by going to Tools > Folder Options, General tab, select 'Show common tasks in folders' and click OK. To show a preview of the image, expand the Details pane.

Windows xp has an option that will preview the file in thumbnail view. You don't need to preview the file in the left pane. But if you want, windows xp still has the pane to let you preview the file or using the above method.

hello
i hope this is the correct place to post this request;
I want to control my FOXTEL (sky) decoder from my PC...i..e i want my PC to change channel, turnthe volume up etc all ising IR...presumably i wasnt to use a "consumer irDA" transmitter - these things are all over the show in handhelds etc but i cant seem to find one wot plugs into the PC !
does anyone have any suggestions?

Whoa! Tell me you're not serious, Bryce, lad... You want to use your $2000 PC as a wireless TV remote? Rather inconvenient, I should think, having to lug it into the living room every time you want to change channels. IR is line-of-sight, you know... Or are you installing mirrors in all the doorways?
IrDA is a standard unto itself, though it works just like a serial port. You can buy transceiver adapters for the PC, but I doubt that you're going to find an off-the-shelf package that knows the codes for communicating with your TV box. You might be able to write your own routines, but how will you discover the right codes? They don't generally publish such things. Buy a $9.95 handheld remote and select your model from the menu...

well actually its more like 200 buck piece of junk
but i wanna do it for a reason known only to my good self...and anyone else i wanna tell
i wanna have my pc change the channel and stuff like that
i just want a consumer irda thing wot works over 4-5 metres....my ipaq handheld can do it...and i want my pc to do it too
unless you can think of another way i can remotely get the rugby onto my pc's hard drive at the right time on the right channel?

Hi, My friend using compaq laptop. He has setup a password before boot the computer and password to protect the BIOS. And now he forget the password. We recovery the password again?? Can we destroy the password in order to be able to change the BIOS configuration or boot the computer???

Ya. you cant recover your setp password(as of what i know).
You have only 1 option left with u i.e remove ur CMOS batterry for a minute & then re-place it there & reboot.
You can even change the CMOS battery. Its cheap around 40-50$

Thank you very much for your information. As far as I know that for the desktop computer we could change the CMOS battery or change the jumper setting based on the mainboard configuration. But for this case, it is the laptop computer. So I don't know how to remover the battery of the CMOS from the laptop. Do you have any more comment???

I used to have a Compaq laptop. The CMOS battery was under the keyboard...

i dont know exactly but there is is one key_button like ctrl+p which breaks the cmos password i am not sure & also as per my knowledge it is suitable for the personal computer

I got my Dell bios master password and Hard Drive (HDD) master password. They also do this for HP, Compaq, Fujitsu, Acer, Sony and Samsung laptops and desktops.

Send your Dell model and service tag and they will email back your bios master password and or HDD master password for your Dell computer.

Remove BIOS battery then back battery again in
restart ur laptop u will not see any password (BIOS password)
if u have administrator or user password to login in ur laptop then u should hack it or the long way is to reinstall OS PC.

What exactly it is?
What is its use?
Can we access it via any programming language(MFC/Win32 API)?
When we format whole Hard disk,hidden partition is also gets formatted or not?

Hidden partitions are used by some disreputable manufacturers in place of Recovery CDs, also used by disreputable manufacturers but more expensive. Reputable manufacturers distribute real OS CDs with the operating system you paid for intact and licensed. Hidden partitions usually contain a system image of the original setup so that it can be easily restored by the press of a key on bootup. You may be able to access it using a custom program, depending upon the protections assigned to it, and the user permissions of the account that you use to run the program - it wouldn't hurt to try.
The FORMAT command works on logical drives, not partitions, so FORMAT C: will destroy the C: drive, but not the D: drive contained in the same extended partition. Of course, that will rarely happen, as the C: drive is usually created in a Primary partition, which can only contain one logical drive, and the rest of the logical drives on the same hard drive are created in an Extended partition (which can hold 4 logical drives). My server is a bit weird, as it has C on Drive 0, D and E on a second physical drive (Drive 1), and boots from J (on Drive 0), but that's not the norm.
The usual procedure is to use FDISK to create a Primary partition on physical Drive 0, then allocate the rest of the drive to an Extended partition. Primary partitions are bootable, so a logical drive C is created on the Primary partition. Additional logical drives are created in the Extended partition. Each logical drive is then formatted using FORMAT, and the OS is installed on the logical drive in the Primary partition. Running FORMAT on one logical drive will not affect the other logical drives on the same physical drive, or within the same partition.

But what actually i would like to know is:
(1) How I can attain a situation in which system at boot time will ask for "press h to boot from hidden partition"
(2) How I can transfer the control to hidden partiton booting.
(3) Is it possible to program BIOS?...so that at boot time it will automatically transfers control to hidden partition address.

I want to know how to get the status of RAM i.e
(1) how much size it is having?
(2) How many memory locations are available(free)?
(3) How many memory locations are in bad state?
(4) what is the status of DATA BUS(working or not)?
(5) what is the status of Address BUS(working or not)?
All these things i need to check prior to OS installations.
So is there any way to get it?

The Power On Self Test (POST) in the BIOS tests all these functions, then loads the OS. If the PC gets through POST, the memory is good.

POST is meant as a simple check and doesn't test memory particularly thoroughly. Also, most systems now come configured for 'Quick POST' which is even less thorough.
For a deeper memory test, try Windows Memory Diagnostic[^] or memtest86[^].
