Hi There
I am a complete beginner at this so please excuse the dumb question!
I have been hammering away at my first ever program in VB .NET and seem to have got it all sorted out. It's a viewer to go on a disc with photographs for delivery to clients. It displays previews, allows saving of single or multiple images and reads and displays metadata. The code is not very tidy or anything, but in visual studio it works fine.
Unfortunatly my understanding of the jargon involved in all this is non-existent. Therefore i really do not understand how to go from having something working in Visual Studio to something I can put on a disc with an autorun file and some photo folders and get it to work.
I have managed to put the app from the bin folder on a disc with all the other stuff, and it seems to work fine on the machine with Visual Studio on it. It will not, however, work on other machines. On trying to start the app I get a:"Application failed to initialize properly (0x0000135)" message.
What does this mean and how can I fix it.
I would be most grateful if some magnanimous programmer out there could help me out of my shocking ignorance.
Thanks!
Dr. Wizard

It would appear that the other machines don't have the .NET Framework installed, or at least the version of the Framework that your app is compiled on.

You'll need to create a release version of the application which saves the CLR(Control Language Runtime) file to disc. This enables other users withour the .NET framework to run the program.I know VB.NET 2003 has a great Wizard for doing this so you might want to check out On-line help as it is a bit long winded to put down here.

First you have to distribute the .net framework to all computers that the application will work.
And then you have to distribute the components that you use also.
For example:
What component do you use to display the images??
Thats the problem.

Hi, I want to know which sound file is currently playing in the system. Suppose an application (like winamp, mediaplayer or user application) produces sound the VB code must detect the file playing & its location. thanks in advance.

Not going to happen because there are so many different sources for audio. There is just no API to tell you whether there is a sound FILE playing or a sound WAV generated from code or a MIDI playing, CD Audio, Line In, Microphone, DirectSound, ... On top of that, multiple sources can be playing all at once. It's just not possible to do...

as a start to my posting below, can i replace
Query15
in
Path = TempDS151.Query15(Count - 1).TemplateID
with a variable to designate query15?

How does a dataset come to have a parameter called Query15 ?

Several googles have got me no closer to figuring out what object you're using here, however:
If you're using an existing class instance, then you can't change it's interface. However, the ideal thing here would be to use stored procedures that accept parameters for the different things you require. As you're lumbered with access, the next best thing would be a function that accepts parameters and generates the SQL you need according to their values.

I was going to attach the connection string, but it really says nothing. I am figuring that I need to use some SELECT..FROM..WHERE statements but I would like to be able to filter the existing dataset. Im still a little confused between the Adapters, Connection, DataSet and instances. I guess it also doesnt help that I have the flu and my head is spinning on its own.
So what am I running the SQL commands against? The dataset class?
Thanks much

hi
i am very new to .net arena ...
i am just learning network programming .
so could anyone pls help in getting myself started
thank u

With what? You've just asked the most generic question we've seen. What do you want to do with "network programming"?

network programming in sense that i want to work on sockets in .net , well isnt it possible to work on .net
|
|
|
|
|
Well, you can do a lot of "network programming" in .Net.
What he means is, WHAT do you want to do? Open sockets, send data, use TCP or UDP?
We can't teach you network programming here.
Try looking at MSDN library at Microsoft.com
If you need help, then let us know.

Well, you're still not being specific enough. The only thing we can do is recommend a book. Not knowing your experience makes this difficult, so I'll just go with the shotgun approach and suggest Network programming in .NET : C# & Visual Basic .NET[^].

Thought this might be the thread for me if I can put a specific question.
I am using the line in VB
Shell ("net use lpt1: \\server\printer /PERSISTENT:NO")
which works fine but - how do I get error messages back or otherwise verify that it has worked ?
Struggling
|
|
|
|
|
I'm assuming your using VB6...
Using the Shell method, you don't get anything back.
A better method is to add a Reference to the Microsoft Script Host Object Model and use the WshNetwork class to add this printer connection, a sample of which can be found here[^]. This way, you'll at least get an error back if the call fails.
You'll have to modify the code a litte bit. Once the Reference is added, your code to create the WshNetwork object and use it to create the LPT1: connection would look something like this:
Dim myNetworkObj As New WshNetwork
On Error Resume Next
myNetworkObj.AddPrinterConnection "LPT1", "\\Server\Print1"
If Err.Number > 0 Then
' Something failed!
End If

i just want to open sockets and try to communicate with other computer or passing some information to it ...like
message queues

|

My answer doesn't change. You're STILL not being specific enough. "Sockets" covers a HUGE range of topics... Get the book. Plain and simple.

Hi,
Working on a VB6 application. I need to detect whether following are installed or not :
IE6
Media Player
Adobe Acrobat Reader
Shockwave / Flash Player
QuickTime Player
(and other essential plugins for IE)
I need to detect whether they are installed and whether they meet requirements (ie. specific versions).
What would be the best way to do it ? Can it be made to check these during the installation of the app ?
Thanks
Ale

You'll have to check for registry entries specific to each application. Each manufacturer, and even different product, can store it's version information in different ways.
For example, IE's version can be found at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer, value name: Version (REG_SZ)
Media Player will be at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MediaPlayer\Setup\Installed Versions, value name: wmp.dll(REG_BINARY)

Sure, it would require that you write a custom installer to do this though.

what I mean - create a program, what will by clicking on button, open Internet Exploter and visit a website (http://www.google.com/ for example)
