involved in developing a windows service. after doing build solution, got the exe in the release folder of the windows service. using Installutil tool i installed the service too. and got the messgae "The transacted install has completed." in vs.net command prompt. but the problem is that am unable to see those services in Administrative tools in the services section.
kindly help me out.

using service installer am able to create service and able to see in the services. but its not running saying "the services on the host started and stopped. some services automatically stopped beacuse of no work to do like alerts"

That error usually means that an exception occured in the service when the service tried to start. See if you can build the service and run it as a winforms application or a console application and try to find what is causing the error. Alternatively you could use exception handling and write all exceptions to a file or to the windows log. That way you might be able to find what is causing the service to stop when trying to start.

I encountered the same error once. My Windows Service was a accessing the network and I made it a local Service. If you're doing the same.. try making it a network service..

Could it be that you have .NET 1.0 AND 1.1 on the same machine?
I've experienced some weird effects when I had developed a .NET 1.1 (VS2003) windows service and calling "installutil" from the commandline picked the executable from .NET 1.0.
Try calling installutil with the full path (...\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v1.1.4322\...) and see if it helps.

Hi,
I created a DLL by VC++ and want to register and install it
onto WinXP. I would like to know what choices are available for
achieving it ?
1. Can I get it done by programming with C# ?
If yes, how ?
2. Can I get it done by .msi or .cab ?
If yes, how ?
And I want to know that the general practice for creating the
CLSID for the dll for deploying a software dll. Is the clsID generated
at the developer machine ? or generated
at the target machine ?

Hi!
If you mean you want to register a COM object then the easiest way is to call DllRegisterServer in the DLL.
This can be achieved by calling "regsvr32 TheDll.dll" (using the Process class, for example).
Or, if you want to include the COM dll in a setup, you usually can set the "SelfRegister" flag for the dll to true. In this case, windows installer calls DllRegisterServer in the dll during install.

im trying to change a value in a popup dialog window.
the dialog window is not created by me.
so i need to find the dialog on the screen in run time (similer to the spy++)
then find on it - its textbox - and change the string in it.
does any body know how i can find a window in runtime ??

You are going to have to use native calls to what you want to do. Just google for FindWindow SetWindowText...

Currently i am facing a problem of resetting focus on DateTimePicker control.
Problem: I enter to DateTimePicker control and change the MM value. Now i traverse to another control and came back to DateTimePicker control then it default set the focus on last activate section; in this case on MM where i wanted it to focus on HH.
My DateTimePicker format is DateTimePickerFormat.Custom and CustomeFormat is "HH:mm:ss".

I have created a windows installer i VS.NET 2003 to install my application. The application consists of a windows service, a small winforms application and some dll's. The application installs and runs fine but only when I have hardcoded a path I have in a settings file.
What I want to do is get the folder where I install the application and write that to the file when I install the application. Because that is what I want, the default path for this setting should be the folder where the application is installed. So is there any way to get that folder during the installation? I have tried using the Installer class but they alone doesnt seem to be enough. The only folder I can get from there is C:\windows\system32 which happens to be the current folder in the Installer class.

Check out the MsiGetProductInfo[^] function in the msi.dll .
The INSTALLPROPERTY_INSTALLLOCATION property returnes the installation path.
Sorry that I do not have any samples on how to do it in .NET and C#.
But it should be fairly straight forward using pInvoke.

You could create a class library for the custom action of writing the installation path into your config file.
Inside your InstallerClass you can use reflection to get the location the custom action is executed from (Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location). This usually would be in the directory your service has been installed to.

I managed to find a solution. I had a custom action in the installation to handle the Installer classes I had in my projects and there is a propery for a custom action called CustomActionData there. By setting the value of that parameter to /installdir="[TARGETDIR]\" I could get the installation directory in my Installer class with this code: this.Context.Parameters["installdir"]. And that was all I needed. Took a while to find all parts of this solution and puzzle it together. I found one part of this solution at a time. Nowhere was it explained all the way.
