Same conclusion I have come to Konstantin. The odd thing is that you can fully control the position, status, size and modal-properties of a browser window if you open it via script. i.e. You cannot control an already open window, but any window you open can be fully controlled.

ASP blocks in XML

So who knows how to put ASP into XML elements without having to use &<test>l<test>t<test>;<test>%?

e.g.:

HTML

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<page>
	<title>BGCMS: Home</title>
	<content>
		<h1>Welcome to BGCMS</h1>
		<p>
			This is a wonderful <b>place!</b> <img src="test.gif"/>
		</p>

If I run that through an XSL processor, or even validated the XML, naturally the parser goes haywire and tells me that <% is an inavalid way to start a new element.

And yes Konstantin, it is another confusing and weird question Big Grin | :-D

I figured it out and it is far easier than I imagined.

!CDATA is the way

e.g:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<page>
	<title>BGCMS: Home</title>
	<content><![CDATA[

!CDATA basically tells the XML parser to totally ignore everything within the !CDATA section. Very handy Smile | :)

Hello -- I am trying to create a web-site for our church that has a 'profiles' section for members and also has a forums section where people can leave message simliar to the code project.

Our main question is how do we set up the login system -- the company that is hosting our site has front page server extensions installed, but also has cold-fusion. from my brief beginners knowledge it looks like cold-fusion is the only way to really do a login system.

what would you all recommend? should i just go out and buy a cold-fusion book, or are their other ways to do this.

right now we are really looking for general guidance more than anything else,

If you want to use the Code Project discussion forums on your site, then you'll need to find a host that supports ASP. Ask your current host, they may already support it.

You could go either way with this. I'm sure there are plenty of Cold Fusion login systems available for free, and I know there are plenty of ASP login apps available (HotScripts.com). Personally, I would use ASP, but only because I don't know Cold Fusion.

If you have to stick with your current host, then find out whether or not they support ASP. If they do, then you can use Code Project's discussion forums. If not, then you'll have to find a Cold Fusion forum to use. In the latter case, buy yourself a good book on Cold Fusion and have fun!

Thanks for your reply . . . I definitely want to use ASP -- I was just talking with somebody and they hinted that I wanted to use the Global ASA. I have done a lot of visual basic stuff, how do I make the leap to web programming. Is there a good tutorial on ASP out there?

But since you already know VB, I *highly* recommend the following book:

Professional Active Server Pages 3.0 (Alex Homer et al)

If your host doesn't support ASP, then ReadyHosting.com is a nice affordable host with lots of options.

If you are looking for paying ASP host, you can try 123HostNow.com(Feel free to strip referral info from link). Cheap and a lot of features with great support.

I've only read quickly about ASP. However it's syntax is VB and thats what i started programming in, so i'm sure it easy enough. I've only done server side programming in Perl and it doesn't have Request.Cookies object which if my memory serves me correctly...ASP does...

Anyways...what yer saying then...is yes it is possible to read client side cookies...?

This is the only way i can think of implementing a login sytem like here a codeproject.

Ok cookies are stored on the clients machine. When the client requests a page from the server the cookies that the site can access are passed long to the server in headers (I think.)

You can then use Request.Cookies() to process and change the cookies. It is VBScript and ASP but they are really easy and if you know VB you will have no problems.

Remember you only have access to cookies that you created or that are valid for your site. e.g. if your site is www.cnn.com and there is a cookie on the clients machine from www.bbc.co.uk then you will not even be able to see them.

Ok the why of what I am going to ask would take three days to explain, so I won't. I just need the how please Smile | :)

I have an ASP page which pulls some data from an XML file. Some of that data from the XML file is ASP itself. I need IIS to actually process that ASP data from the XML file isntead of just putting it in the buffer and sending it to the browser.

So I was thinking that what I effectively need to do is have the ASP page on the first run pull out the data, and then have IIS process the data I pulled out as well.

Any ideas or clues? thanks.

I wish it were that easy. I thought of that originally but then I cannot use XSL to process the XML.

Basically I have an XML file which contains Page details and content.
I then have an XSL file for each browser and device.

The ASP page which is called originally merges the XML file with the correct XSL file and produces XHTML back to the browser.

However there is ASP in some of the XML content (it was a mission just getting around XML rules to allow ASP in XML) and that is the ASP which does not get processed and instead is sent as-is to the browser.

I guess, you could save your data to a file and then call Server.Execute() to process it. That is the only idea I can come up with at the moment... Confused | :confused:
