Show us the code that is using a CString or related object. Also, what types are the variables being sent to EnumServicesStatus() ? Is lpservice large enough?

What are you doing with direct port access in Windows? This can't be done in NT as the privledge level of the processor is set to prevent it. It's probably possible to do it back in Windows 9x, but who uses that these days?
The equivlent would be to just inline "IN" and "OUT".
This goes against modern Operating Systems which are designed to abstract hardware from the application developer. If you want to do direct port access, write a hardware driver.

As Toby said, you can use a driver to access I/O ports from a program running within NT. A few months ago, I made use of PortTalk[^] to read/write some ports in order to control some low level undocumented features of a PCI card.

Hi everybody,
I am doing a project in image processing using VC++.
I want to dispaly the image to the user, for which I got all the information about the bitmap from the Serialize function. Except 24 bit bitmap all other bitmaps are not displayed properly
Should I add any extra code for displaying 1,4,8 bit bitmap?
Pls Help

Hi,
You should you Device-Independent Bitmaps rather Device-Dependent Bitmaps. it might solve your problem.

Dear All,
My application converts images of TIFF format to TIFFG3Fax. For this i'm using WriteFile sdk method to write data to the file. It fails. But when i use _lwrite, it works fine. Can someone tell me what is the differences between these two functions. _lwrite is obsolete so MSDN says that WriteFile should be used. But it fails with error code 183 (ERROR_ALREADY_EXISTS)
Please help!

Well, yes, that you went all the way to some disassembly
If you load the C run time source code and visually trace through it, you could see that all the 'standard' file IO calls typically devolve into CreateFile, ReadFile, WriteFile, and CloseHandle - after psending a fair bit of time mapping the fiol I/O flags and parameters into the ones that the Win32 API expects

Of course they are, that was the point

those low level C functions wrap the WIN API. So if you would write windows apps for the 16 bit version, some of the code would still be usable, since it's still provided. If you used the 16 bit API however chances are that the code would become invalid since those function might no longer exist.
If you look in implementation of STL, CRT functions or whatever library MS has written, in the end they all call the WIN API to do the job. So basically all the libraries all wrappers around the system specific API.

Hi,
How to go about getting data from another running application? This is wat I am trying to do. There is program A running and storing data in the hard disk. I am creating a program which will retrive the real time data. This means that when i open the program, it will retrive the current data that program A is recording. However I do not run program B when A is running. I will run B as and when needed.
Any idea?
Aaron

You can't - if program A is writing to disk, it will own the file until it closes it. Are you writing both programs ? If so, you should look into some interprocess communication to send this data, bypassing the file. Otherwise, you can't do it so long as program A has the file open.

Not true, you can set the "sharing" parameters so another application can read from a file while you write to it.

Did you wrote program A? If not, than you might be in some trouble. If you wrote program A, you should change the part where you open the file for writing and modify it so it shares access to it. Read here[^] for more information on sharing files.
If you did not write program A, you can try to open the file that shares all access to it. This way, there might be a chance that you can access the file if program A did not deny all access..
Good luck.

ok tks will look into the share format of the file. If i set it to share read, logically it should work. rite?
