If all these developers are writing custom assemblies, why is it that they can't be put into a few library projects
Sure they will be put into as many library projects as possiable. But if there are many assemblies built by as many developers on their own machine then it'll be like snakes & ladders referencing those assemblies. All I said is that if we finalized an assembly release, then that assembly will be placed on the server so that every one can refer it.
Dave Kreskowiak
Yes, if you reference the assembly, this is true. But, then your bound to that specific version of it. If, like you said, you develop libaries and components and just allow VS to increment the version numbers with each build, you're screwing yourself. You're going to have lots of different versions of your component copied into the bin folders of how many projects?
Yes, this can be a problem in the future and the way i see out of it is that before finalizing any version of an assembly certain version policy has to be in order like change in only major and minor version will be placed otherwise the existing assembly will be modified
or
if you have any suggestion?
Dave Kreskowiak
This is the problem! You really don't want a couple dozen versions of your libraries in the GAC! If your going to build a common libarary, I would think this has to be stable before you go building against it
As you have already said
If you want to add new features to the library, great! Develop a new version of the library, test and deploy it. Core libraries are not just "build on the fly" components of your software.
We'll be taking care of it.

Ahoy!
I just want to ask, is it possible to control a Visual FoxPro 6 database using Visual Basic 6? Like adding, deleting, and/or editing records in a VFP database.
I’m working on an identification system (barcode, biometrics, etc.) and I wanted to have a VB front-end with a VFP database back-end.
Thanks a lot!

The Microsoft Jet database engine, supplied with Visual Basic, gives you the ability to access many types of databases--Microsoft Access databases; other PC-based databases such as dBASE, FoxPro, Paradox, and Btrieve; and any relational database that supports the open database connectivity (ODBC) standard. Visual Basic provides two basic techniques for working with the Jet database engine: the data control and the data access objects (DAO). The data control requires less code, but data access objects are much more flexible.

Thank you for replying! BTW, do you have a link to a quick ADO tutorial that is specific in using VFP? Thanx a lot!

Sorry, I wasn't "into" Foxpro so I don't have a specific one, but it's fairly universal.
try here:

or google it, I'm sure there is a few guy's out there doing the same thing.

What do you mean by 'you are not able to install it' ? It won't install ? It won't run ? Is the .NET framework installed on this machine ?

dot net framework is installed in the target machine.not able to install means i cud not able to run the setup program in windows ME.

An installer can be created to target specific machines - perhaps your installer thinks it is only for 2000/XP ? What happens, do you get an error ? A crash ? Nothing happens ?

Ah - the lights come on. You need to install the msi installer itself, ME does not know what to do with an msi file otherwise.

There are two Windows Installer setups named InstMsiA.exe and InstMsiW.exe for ansi and unicode respectively. You just find and run the correct program for the OS - I think MsiA is correct for ME but I'm not positive.
Running this will do everything to install Windows Installer.
That still does not answer why the dot net framework setup did not install the same components that InstMSI installs.
You may need to search the Microsoft site to see if there are known bugs associated with installing the dot nmet framework and/or the Windows Installer on ME systems.

It sounds like the Windows Installer service is either missing files or one or more of the files has been corrupted. Unfortunately there is not a repair switch for InstMSI.
It could just be a missing file type registration or a path registration problem too. Try running an install from the commandline.
Find msiexec.exe - it should be in the Windows system folder. If you can find that, try running any msi from the commandline using
"C:\<path to file>\msiexec.exe" /i "<path to msi file>\yourmsi.msi"
and see if it works from the commandline.

Could you please provide me with a detailed instructions on how to go about this(to install the msi installer itself, ME does not know what to do with an msi file otherwise.)
or provide some links where I can get this information .I am quite new to VB.Net.Thanks so much for your help

I can't really add to what the other person has said. If the MSI installer claims it's already here, you need to figure out a way to repair the install.

Again, unless there is some sort of bug that is specific to Windows ME, and I know very little about Windows ME, at this point about all I know of to suggest is to re-install Windows. You've tried running InstMSI, and it said it was already installed. I assume you've installed the dotnetfx.exe, and that also installs the Windows Installer if it is not present or not the correct version.
Since your Windows seems to think the Windows Installer is there, it should at least recognize an msi file even if the msi file is corrupt or not compatible. Since it does not the only thing I can assume is that your Windows Installer service is corrupted somehow, and I know of no way to repair it other than a complete OS reinstall.
Sorry I cannot be more helpful.

Windows ME is supposed to have the Windows Installer service installed as part of the OS.
The Net Framework installation is also supposed to install the Windows Installer service if it is not present.
No Windows Installer service on ME may mean a corrupt Windows install, but the dotnetfx should fix at least the installer service.
Are you bootstrapping the dotnetfx setup in your setup package?

Post an error message.
I believe that ME requires ANSI setups built like a Win98 setup. Win2K, XP and 2003 definitely use Unicode. This may be part of youre problem.

At most, you can get the shares on the machine and which users are connected to them. The rest of the information isn't available anywhere in the Win32 API.

Not to sure about that. Take a look at the utility on Win XP called 'openfiles'. It seems to do just about what he needs. Not sure if it is there in Win2K but worth a shot. More over, if the utility can get the data then there has to be an API to get it.
Perhaps using this in combination with the output from a netstat can be a help.

I have made a class wich I use to make logins from my applications...
My question is ... Can I raise an event with log-info?
Want a listbox on my form to show login info; "Connecting to databse ... ", "Trying to login ....." etc.
I want an event in my class to give my application this info during login.
Is it possible?

I think It'd completely done. To do that, you put the RaiseEvent statement in the event "paint" ,etc. of the ListBox containing the log information. Thus, when you want to fire this event , you only refresh that Listbox.
For instant:
when you add into the ListBox a new item, you call the "invalidate" method of the ListBox. Because you already caught the event you want to create in the "Paint" event, that event automatically trigger.
