I was self-taught until my computer science degree. Thankfully studying computer science gave me exposure to all sorts of programming related stuff that I would never have had if I had done another degree or none at all; such things as building compilers and learning non-procedural languages such as schema.
Computer Science should have been in there.

To become a good programmer, one just needs very good logic (reasoning). No special degree is needed. If one wants to do specialized programming, then he/she should have the domain knowledge of that particular field. Thats all. Degree is immaterial.

I'm curious to know why they aren't separate options. Especially since there are so many branches in Engineering, some of which have little to do with Physics.
I was forced to choose between that and Math, but went for the former. Of course, being a CS Engg graduate influenced my decision....
Cheers,
Vikram.

Actually Physics should be put under science.

Actually Physic should have a section of its own.
After all, with Biology, its one father of many other science!
No, no, Math is just the midwife...

Oops. My bad. I was thinking about programmer managers.

you're welcome. There is lot of fun with voting... Btw if you look at 13BOB12's posts you'll see that he is... retarded? Ignore please.

Not many programmers are active sports people but I've always felt skateboarding is like programming.
When you have a stack its the same as encountering an error.
When you learn a new trick you leverage it with other tricks you know.

Back in the day when I was hiring new programmers, or those that just needed some training to get started, I found that music Majors made the best programmers. They had the math skills, from music theory, and they still had the creative skills other artists. I would seperate music majors from other Arts, because they had a more traditional science like background, unlike other Arts majors, even though their artistic creativity still existed.

I think the best background is enthyusiasm. I wanted to beckome programmer just 'cause i wanted to make my own rpg. And know look at me, i'm programming in OpenGL with OOP in C++. I hate to see someone who knows how to program and doesn't make any games.

so you don't like me, i don't like you too... why posting as anonymous ? anything to hide ?
moreover, programming in "OpenGL with OOP in C++" don't make you a good programmer, and don't make your game better...
hate me, i don't care... there are so many interesting people on CodeProject...

(I don't know why your post got voted down. )
Enthusiasm is always good. I don't want programmers who are just doing it because 'it is a job'. I want people who live and breathe software development. People who really get off on providing software to make other peoples jobs easier and better.
I started programming commercially in the late 80's, but started off as hobbyist writing my own games for the ZX81 and Sinclair Spectrum, Dragon etc in the early 80's. So it is always nice to come hire people who started out the same way I did.

Next time, try not to insult fellow developers and try to write a coherent, well-written post, then you won't be modded down.
Your main point I agree with: enthusiasm translates into studious learning and self-teaching. Games are a major draw to programming, unfortunately its one of the toughest areas of software development.

I don't mean it when i say "hate". I just think that programming isn't fun without games.
