I'm working on a project to create a simple children's geography game. I've taken some networking courses in college which helped me to understand many of the networking concepts, but the course was very weak on the actual coding instructions.
What I'm looking for is some sort of client/server C++ or Visual Basic program that can realistically be run within our LAN CSLab. This program needs a simple log on feature that allows the user to input their name, and have it sent to the server, and possibly stored on a text file to be accessed from in our game code. The client and server also need to be able to send simple instructions back and forth while running our game code. We are thinking of sending simple number messages ("1", "2", and "3") from client to server to be used to determine what happens while playing the game.
Let me know if you have any VERY simple resources that can help me out. I really need some flexible code that isn't too difficult to understand or explain.
Thanks.

One item I have never seen a sample of (so if you know of one please pass it along) is the code to make an application look like a hard drive to the OS. For my needs an NT/Win2000 service would be fine. What I need is to have a new applications data be access (and effectivly created on demand) from legacy code. If this new application could make an interface that looks like a drive to the system legacy code could just use the file open and then select data options as though it was reading from disk.
A second and probably more common option would be to expose the contents from an FTP or HTTP server be accessible directly for applications as though the connection was a local disk.
Am I just being crazy here?

There are programs that do things similar to what you want to do. You can use shell extensions to simulate an add'l hard drive on the system which will actually connect to the internet and download from/upload to/query the server. Check out the shell extension articles.

See here: http://www.codeproject.com/shell/namespcextguide1.asp
This allows you to add namespaces to the shell. It somewhat like adding a virtual hard drive in the sense that you are looking for. Hope it helps.

Hi
Im actually implementing such a kinda thing (Ur second option )for my J2EE Product where the J2EE Product is a WebAPP and i have to represent the whole server file structure on windows as a NameSpace Extension on windows - I have written custom communication components for the HTTP /J2EE Web Application - Actually the Windows Client is a Windows Shell NameSpace Extension - A Non-ROOTED NameSpace Extension .You can drag and drop the files from and to into this "Virtual HardDisk" and the component uploads / downloads into / from the server -
More information on Writing namespace extensions and a Wizard to namespaces extensions can be found ina very good book from PHI and pearson - BOOK Name is Windows Shell Programming - Author Scott Seely

Does any one have some source code of CD burner software or similar ? Or anyone know where I can find more info about this topic ?
I need, urgently, to add CD burning to the project I am working on...
|
|
|
|
|
http://www.goldenhawk.com has libraries that I incorporated into a project that required CD Burning, and they worked just fine.

From the site:
All of our software will function in demonstration mode. The demo versions are fully functional except that all recording operations are limited to 1X speed. You are entitled to use this version for a maximum of 30 days. After this period, you must either purchase the software or remove it from your system. Note: A few recorder models do not support 1x recording speed, so the demos will not work with them (the error "Unable to set writing speed" will appear).
All of our software requires that you have the proper ASPI drivers installed on your system. Please see the section below for information on the ASPI drivers which are available from Golden Hawk Technology, Adaptec, LSI Logic, and Symbios.
Please read Important Installation Information before using any of our software.
If you have an IDE/ATAPI CDROM recorder or reader, then please read Important IDE Information before using our software.
The downloading of any software intended for "registered users only" by anybody who has not purchased the software is strictly prohibited. The use of pirated "unlock codes" is done solely at your own risk. We offer a 30-day money back guarantee (no questions asked) on all of our products, so we strongly recommend that you do not use any pirated versions (since most of them do not work properly anyway).
So you get to burn at 1X, for 30 days and beyond that, you're breaking the law. I am not ragging on GoldenHawk, I can imagine this library took some work and they are entitled to sell it, I'm just pointing out that if you want to use it, you will need to buy it.

Absolutely! cdrecord runs just fine on Win32. Actually, it's the only thing I ever use on NT5.

I want to be able to embed a picture file in an HTML email programmatically using CGI/PERL. I can't seem to find any information on how to do that. Can someone point me in the right direction?
So far I'm able to send HTML formatted email with my CGI script, but the picture doesn't appear on the document, just the blank square, and the paperclip attachment icon doesn't even show up, though the pic's binary data is listed in the message source.

Nobody answered and I eventually figured it out on my own. I used Perl's Mail::Sender Module.
All the code required can be found here:
http://jenda.krynicky.cz/perl/Sender.pm.html
Jenda himself helped me with some of the snags I ran into.
Anyway I just wanted to let you all know. :P

Just an idea for a tutorial (since I could use it...)
I get frustrated trying to convert/copy or whatever the different types of string repss that Win32/MFC uses.
LPCTSTR/LPSTR/LPTSTR/PSTR and more.
Which strcpy goes with which, how to conver to/from CString or the others...
Thanks,

They are just #define's or typedefs of (this is out of memory):
LPCTSTR : const char *
LPSTR : char *
LPTSTR : char *
PSTR : char *
That is assuming that you are compiling without having defined _UNICODE, in this case the translation is:
LPCTSTR : const wchar_t *
LPSTR : wchar_t*
LPTSTR : wchar_t*
PSTR : wchar_t *
(wchar_t being the 16 bit unicode character type.)
CString has som overridden operators that lets it be used everywhere you could use a const char/wchar_t pointer.

I am working on a assembler and linker (c++) for a specific microprocessor. I am using ELF format ( Executable and linking Format). I have very little documentation for the linker/assembler. I am having problem handling global variables in multiple obj file. i.e. the variable is defined in one file and can be used in other files. While assembler have scope of only one file how will the linker will know, in which file this global symbol is used.
I have searched many sites but found no relevant information. Would you please refer me to some article on ELF assembler\linker relaing to my problem.
Regards!

Does anybody know how to switch from the classical look to the advanced look, i mean for example in the buttons of the CWBButton class, how to disable and enable the ownerdraw using a single button, and the redraw all the buttons, for example a button that says change skin..., you're running the classic style, and when you click in that but, the other buttons are redrawed with the advanced style, all these examples are based on the CWBButton class.

Does anybody have an easy way to create the watermark bitmaps used in wizards (top right corner)? For example, I have a an icon, which I would like to respresent in the standard manner. I want to be able to do this at run time, rather than just editing a bitmap file and adding it as a resource. I assume I can just use BitBlt, but whenever I play with that, it never seems to do what I'm expecting!
Any suggestions and ideas welcome.

I think it is very simple to use GDI+ for this case, there are some article about it in CP

GDI+ available only in WinXP, but the standard solution talks about any of Windows systems

Hmm, thanx, I read it.. Not sure why I don't have those DLLs (I have Feb 2001 PSDK installed), so I'm just downloading a last version of Platform SDK now (Nov 2001). Also I found you can download the dlls separately from here
They said that win98/NT4 is minimum... but shame on people who are still using Win95, LOL
Thanx, I'll play with it

CPropertySheetEx class has a contructor that takes HBITMAP for watermark images in WIZARD97. Just use it, that's all. Read in MSDN about Wizard97 and CPropertySheetEx
