Hi g00fyman,
Just wondering, do you need to bind the ddl on every post? because the best practice is to enclose the binding in an if statement like this:
if(!this.IsPostBack){
ddl.DataBind();
}
This way you only bind the ddl the first time the user enters the page, and viewstate takes care of keeping the selectedindex. Just wondering if you know this, since your change is kind of... awkward.

I wrote a server that listents on INADDR_ANY port X.
I am using a hub, but I got my IP through http://www.whatismyip.com.
I open my server and connected to it through internet explorer and another client program. Through 127.0.0.1 and the ip the hub gave me (192.168.0.100) I managed to connect to myself, but through the other ip supplied by http://www.whatismyip.com I couldn't.
ping.exe worked on my ip, but was it my computer that replied? The same story was with a different computer's ip (this time ping didn't reach it either).
Can someone please help me or refer me to something that would give me an answer?
Do I need to do more than just open a socket to the specified ip? How come I can connect with the same socket methods to other sites but not to a specific ip? Do I have to use a proxy server (isn't it done automatically by IE)? How do all the messengers work?
thanks,
O.

You make a site so useful and/or addictive that the user decides he wants it immediately accessible and adds it to the links toolbar.
You do not ever, ever touch that bar programatically.

does anyone how internet accelerators work, if they do, and what it would take to make a simple program to boost internet speed?
I have dsl and have seen a lot of programs that claim to speed internet speed and thought i would try to make one of my own (mostly for fun).
any help, including websites tutorial or ideas would be greatly appreciated.
thank you in advance for the help and happy new year!

accelerators work by compressing the info that comes down the pipe and decompressing it at the other end:
<page requested="">
...
<accelerator sitting="" at="" your="" isp="" (for="" e.g.)="" compresses="" the="" data="">
...
<your slow="" dsl="" connection="" (slow="" compared="" to="" your="" isp's="" web)="">
...
<your computer's="" locally="" installed="" accelerator="" where="" it="" is="" decompressed="">
...
<your browser="">
Depending on the accelerator you can configure it to send low quality images instead of the full image and leave out certain things from pages such as adverts. It's all about sending less info down the wire.

other accelerators work by caching the pages whose links are on the page you are viewing, in the background, while you are viewing the initial page.
kind of pointless though cause you could end up downloading and caching a whole heap of crap you will never look at. mainly a dialup (56K) approach, not so relative for broadband speeds.
could always implement a neural network to learn which pages you are most likely to browse to though

Hi,
I have a need to send the contents of a form to two seperate programs, both being cgi's. How do I go about this.
Please include full details as I am a java beginner.
Thanks

What technology are you using to create your form? You'll have to do this manually. Are you wanting to get a response back from both or are they just receiving data? My guess is that you'll have to create a web request and send it to those two CGI scripts from the server. After that, you'll have to parse their responses to determine what to show the user.

I'm just using a HTML form. I have two CGI scripts. One that add the result to a database and the other which is a mail handler.
The basic idea is that someone fills out the form and the data is added to the database and then I get an email so I know to check.
Thanks

|
Why don't you just have the script that is doing the database insert trigger the email notification after the insert is complete?

I'm with Brian. That seems to be the most logical thing. Anything you do to try and send the request to two places is going to be overly-complicated and odd to work with.

You can send the same form twíce, but then you have to send it to a different frame or window the first time. To send it the second time, you use window.setTimeout to make a javascript start after the first submit.

My web host has IIS setup such that the 404 error page is called error404.html and lives in the root of the web space.
In my web space I have a number of web sites, each one in a different folder (except one which is in the root):
www.eg1dotcom -> \
www.eg2dotcom -> \folder1
www.eg3dotcom -> \folder2
now if a page is not found then the browser is routed to error404.html in the root folder. This was fine while I had 1 web there. Now that I have several webs I'd like to add some javascript to the error404.html page and if the missing page comes from (say) www.eg3dotcom I would like the error404.html page to reroute to www.eg3dotcom/error404.html or aspx etc.
Any ideas or pointers to where I should look?
Thanks!

|

|
|
Not much to say. You'll have to parse the received request for the 404 and find out which site the missing page belongs to. Then, use the window.location property to forward to the correct site.

Any resources that you could refer me to where I'd find the java script syntax to do that. I'm only acquintanted with java script in browsers and haven't been fully introduced so I'm not sure how I would retrieve the value of the page which cause the 404.
