Microsoft Exam 70-548 & Proof of Concept -- this is one of the skills to be measured. But I cannot find much information on the web about what Proof of Concept exactly is. I did glean some info where it seems Proof of Concept has to do with creating a prototype of your application? But nothing really explained what Proof of Concept is about.
Any help on other related topics to search for, or links etc., or books on the subject?
Here is the section from the skills being measure on this exam:
Skills measured by Exam 70-547
Envisioning and Designing an Application
Evaluate the technical feasibility of an application design concept.
Evaluate the proof of concept.
Recommend the best technologies for the features and goals of the application.
Weigh implementation considerations.
Investigate existing solutions for similar business problems.
Create a proof-of-concept prototype.
Evaluate the risks associated with ASP.NET 2.0 technology or implementation.
Validate that the proposed technology can be used in the application.
Demonstrate to stakeholders that the proposed solution will address their needs.

Wikipedia gives a pretty good description[^]
Proof of Concepts are kinda like demos, their used to see if an idea is feasible - ie, usually lacking an serious error handling, fluffy interfaces, etc... Just enough to see if your idea is possible and to workout any major problems before commiting serious time and money to something

Thank-you for your take on the meanaing of POC, and the for the Wikipedia link too.
When I google the term it did seem to come up a lot with various security-related text within what google came up with. And the dictionary term does mention computer security, but the implication seems to be that when poc is used in the computer security arena it means "exploit" (paraphrased - exploit meaning taking advantages of glitches in software in order to bring a computer to it knees). So POC in computer security is very different from POC in application design!
From Wikipedia: A proof of concept is a short and/or incomplete realization (or synopsis) of a certain method or idea(s) to demonstrate its feasibility. The proof of concept is usually considered a milestone on the way of a fully functioning prototype. In computer security the term proof of concept (proof of concept code or PoC) is often used as a synonym for exploit.
Also I just noticed it was worthwhile to click on the Wikipedia discussion for it came up with this: ( Retrieved from "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Proof_of_concept") As the encyclopedia mentions POC is a incomplete or short way of realizing the feasibility of an idea. In the field of software ,for the Production environment the POC is developed after the project comes to a particular company. Further, the company discusses what method should it follow for the solution. This is acheived by a lab set up where the research is done. This helps in building the POC.
How in the world I will study or find more documentation for "evaluate for proof of concept" is another challange! I did notice that the skills measured list for the 780-547 test also has "create a proof-of-concept prototype" which is exactly what your are talking about! Maybe reviewing the Microsoft whitepaper for something they did with Northface http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/dnlong/html/fluid.asp[^] will help?

Hi Guys!
I was requested to make the footer (which is a user control ascx file, we are using .Net) always be at the end of the page rather than the middle on pages with not much info in them. We don't want to use frames (I want it to be on the bottom of the page, even if it means scrolling down, just not the middle of it if there is little content on the page).
Can anyone suggest good techniques to do this?
Your help will be very much appriciated!
Cheers
Guy

I've updated a connectionString manually on IIS and restarted Web site,
but previously working INSERT is not working to the new data source.
New connectionString is okay (see details below).
I know I can have multiple connectionStrings, but don't know
how to select one of them on the fly.
I don't know how to handle this situation.
Any help will be very appreciated.
Thanks in advance!
Eugenio
DETAILS:
I'm running an ASP.NET Web Service (IIS 5.1).
Web service INSERTs a couple of records successfully into a DataSet
created using DataSet Wizard on VS2005 to a SQLEXPRESS on local machine.
I've the same database on a remote SQLSERVER (that I can access thru
MS SQLServer Mgmt Studio Express), and wanna INSERT data to it.
So I manually changed Web.config to the new connectionString on IIS and
restarted the Web site that I'm using. Data obviously did not go to the
old database, but it did not go to the new too! (although my code haven't
thrown any exception). Data has been lost.
Second turn, I configured the code to use an ODBC System DSN to the
old and okay database. Worked fine. Changed the DSN settings to the
remote database (connectionString remained the same) as restarted
Web site on ISS. The same behaviour got before: data was lost!

Hmm, interestingly enough, there is an article on this right here on The Code Project.
http://www.codeproject.com/aspnet/IFrameParams.asp
Also, a quick google search on "asp.net iframe parameters" yielded quite a few hits that seemed very relevant.

SSL is my answer in short for your problem.
You really have to do some R&D on security and encryption, if you are concerned about customer privacy.

Sucharita is right, you will have to get an SSL cert, install the certificate on your web server, and then use HTTPS:// to encrypt the traffic between the client's browser and your web page. This is easy stuff, and most places that sell SSL certificates have step-by-step instructions of how to set this up.

hello,
i have a page (in php) that needs to get the number of rows in a large table. by large i mean 247,840 rows (currently, always going up). right now i am doing:
$result = mysql_query("SELECT * FROM `something`", $link);
$num = mysql_num_rows($result); this makes the page take 1-4 seconds to generate, but when i remove these 2 lines it takes 30-40 ms to generate. is there a faster way to get the number of rows?
thanks in advance,
sam kline

Ask the datebase.
"select count(*) from `something`"
---
b { font-weight: normal; }
|
|
|
|
|
$sql = 'SELECT COUNT(1) FROM something';
$result = mysql_query($sql);
$num = mysql_result($result,0);
page gen time dropped to 40 ms when i used this.
thanks!

Use count(*) instead of count(1). The first one will not check if the argument is null, while the second one will evalue the argument once for each record in the table (unless the optimizer is smart enough to recognise that the expression is constant). If the table is using the MyISAM storage engine, you should get a response quite a lot faster than 40 ms, as that engine keeps track of the number of records in each table.
---
b { font-weight: normal; }

|

ok i changed it to count(*) but it didnt really make a difference. ive got other mysql queries though, thats what is taking 40 ms.

Hi,
I am curious to know how we can add tool tip to a dropdown list which is displayed in webpage.
FYI: when the user scrolls the mouse over the dropdown he should see a tooltip which contains the text selected text in the dropdown list
