I don't want to forget it. Until windows xp or longhorn still use MS-DOS. So I want to know when we will use the . sign in the command prompt?

ms-dos don't exist anymore since windows NT...
it is virtually reproduced, but never WinXP uses dos to boot up for example.
check your autoexec.bat... it is certainly empty !

This is a hold over from the old CPM days, the model from which DOS was written. *nix implementations still require the use of "./appname to launch stuff. DSO, on the other hand, doesn't. It's just there for backwards compatibility. Will you ever need to use it? More than likely not.
DOS hasn't existed in quite some time and every version of Windows that is based on the NT Kernel (NT, 2000, XP, 2003, Vista, ...) hasn't relied on it and doesn't need it at all. DOS Emulation on the other hand, is still very much alive in Windows today. Again, it's just there for backwards compatibiltiy.

aren't you aware of the computers evolution ?? DOS is far away now... it is still emulated, and if you want/need to learn about it, just google for your thoughts... otherwise, let it behind and move into 64bits plateforms

Why, you can see my profile and especially where i'm come from. Look at the country, and you might know some information relate to this country. Do you believe that some people that study computer at school do not have computer at home to be practic? Why? I can't answer to you but you might know your answer by yourself. You learn computer since the age of 10. Most of people in your country or US might learn from the age of 5 years old. While most of study in my country study computer at the university and start using computer that same time. Other country use T3 internet connectivity while people in my country use modem to connect to the internet to research an information for study. Less of book store and documentation to read.
As me an example, i use to work with computer since the beginning of 1998. During that time, people still using windows 98 or might waiting for the beta of windows 2000, but my first learning operating system is windows 95. I do not know how MS-DOS look. I study with one computer without a network card and try to learn network. how it possible? Can you give me some idea? I try to learn until i get the job and save a lot of money to invest in my IT studying. Now i have 6 old computer to test in my networking lab.
So my knowledge just grow. I know that some of my question or answer that i post to the other people might seem to be unlogic because of my knowledge and experience. But sometime, i also try to read the book and answer the question of the people. So next time before you post your answer please verify whether it impact to people feeling or not.

There's nothing to use!!! It WAS a requirement, on other operating systems, that when you launched a program, you had to tell it which directory to get the executeable from, even if it was the current directory! THAT'S ALL IT WAS USED FOR!

LOTS of experience with the operating systems. I get most of my information from Microsoft itself off of MSDN, TechNet, Books, training... I've been doing this for well over 25 years now. You get to see the evolution of alot of stuff in that time.

Hi, in the command prompt when we use the command dir to view the file in the folder, it will display the file name with extension. From here, any shortcut that point to file will display .lnk extension. But in windows explorer, the shortcut file do not have an extension whether i try to use show all hidden file and clear option Hide extension for know file type. Does anyone has any idea?

link files are a particuliar type of the windows file system...
even when they do not have any apparent extension, you can see the little arrow on the bottom left corner of the icon reprensenting the file type it is actually linking...

This little arrow could be hidden by configure in REGEDIT. But what i want is just the technique on how to show an extension .lnk in windows explorer. Any idea?

It's not supported. Explorer will hide the extension no matter what. This extension is specially treated in Explorer and it won't show you the extension on Shortcut types.

It's just one of those things that was sitting in my brain.  The HKCR branch is pretty well-documented in MSDN, so you should be able to find info about file associations, icons, verbs, etc.

Whenever I used XP Button(Flat style->system) in vb.net appls with an icon or image,the image or icon is not shown .. But this does if I select flat style->standard or others except system....Is there any another method, becouse I've seen some XP Buttons containing image or icon, eg. in the following link(nero burning appls)

But there is a problem also. when i change flatstyle to system, the image or icon is not displayed!!! Appls contains only label buttons.....but i want to use actual button & changing flatstyle to system with icon....I hope u'll get my Q!.... Plz help in that case!
