René Descartes, in his famous statement that embodied Cartesian Duality.
Personally I disagree with him.

Are you not convinced you really exist?
What is then your 'prime truth', on which you can build your conception of the World?

I'm definitely convinced I exist - I get enough spam to prove that - but I don't agree with Cartesian Duality. To say there is the body and the mind as two separate things is a bit of a cop out for me. It just feels like the "I can't imagine the brain being complex enough to create a mind, therefor it must be something else that created the mind" argument.

I understood cartesian seperation as the separation not of the body and the mind but of the body and the soul, a distinction between temporal and spiritual matters. And for his famous sentence, I understood he said that we can assert that we are because we have the conscience to be. Anyway, I didn't realize the implications you make, I'll have to process these data to rebuild my conceptual model of the Universe

An interesting point: what is the difference between the soul and the mind? Is the mind a reflection of the soul or is it determined solely (forgive the pun) by the body? And if that's the case then what is the soul?

There have been strange experiments to determine what level of separation exists between the mind and the body. A neuroligist can open your skull, stimulate the correct area of your brain, and cause your limbs to move. Yet, you can be awake and "will" with your mind for your limbs to stop moving - the neuroligist is able to control your body despite your mind. Your mind doesn't change. It isn't like he can cause you to think certain thoughts. The thoughts are in the mind/soul, not just the body.

I haven't read it, but I've read other books by the same author. He references the experiments I mentioned above.

The soul may be that part of the mind which defines our humanity, and differentiates ourselves from animals. The human mind would be then the combination of "animal spirits" and 'something more'.
I'm not sure but physically, the human brain has 'parts' other animals don't have... maybe there is the soul.

If the soul is part of the mind and Cartesian Duality is separation of the body and the soul then it must also mean the separation of the body and the mind. So we're back to where we started

A very cartesian approach
Then my hypothesis is false and the soul is not part of the mind. Trapped in perhaps?

Well to borrow some language from Newton, the body is extended (in space) and the mind is not. If the primary reality is a bunch of electrons whirring about speedily... then ALL the secondary characteristis are the product of the unextended mind.
No difference between your computer mouse, your racing bike, or your lunch when it comes to its primary charecteristics... just one big undifferentiated mess.
It all takes place in the mind... hence Cartesian dualism best explained by Whitehead.

This one was pretty easy, but personally I think that, since the French are not so keen on the English language, Descartes actually said "Je pense donc je suis"
