What do you mean "not work"? That is such a vague statement.

Hi Guys,
As of a few days ago I started to venture into the world of SQL. Subsequently I have a question on best practices relating to data population of a win form component.
For example, if you have a sql table which has a product column containing about 100 items. Now you want to pass these product items into a combo-box's drop down list ? What would be the best way of doing it ?
At the moment, I can set the data source property of the combo-box directly to this table containing the product items column. However, the product item's column changes data changes say couple of items per hour then what would be a good best pratice of keeping the combo box's drop down list updated ?
My idea would be to use data caching and apply a time expiry policy. Is my approach incorrect or too extreme for what I want to do. I would really appreciate if someone could give me guidance on this.
Thanks
Vee

Hi Vee. I think your expectation of production traffic would drive this question. In many of my apps for low to moderate traffic, I just use a live query at run-time to retrieve the dropDownList items without any caching. But if you found that performance suffered this way for your site, I don't think it's extreme at all to use caching - you could use the Application cache for this, or if you're using ASP.NET 2.0 you could use the new SqlCacheDependency class. Here's a link to an example[^].

thanks for the reply Mike. In your reply you stated that the expectation of the production traffic would drive this question. In response to that statement what are the test procedures you undertake to model traffic conditions on your database.

Hi there. Well, if you are really concerned about it, you could acquire software tools to assist in testing your web sites at high loads. There are many commercially available (try Google for "web stress testing" and you'll find a bunch)
So how many hits a day/hour/minute do you expect you'll get?

Which connection do you suggest I use to connect to a MySQL database? I need to be able to process literally 1000's of requests every minute. I also would like to know if MySQL runs ina query like fashion as Exchange does. That is it creates a log and processes reads and writes when it can. Does it lock the database during reads and writes?
Thanks for the help.
Example connection code is appriciated.

I get the following error when trying to install sql server 2005 standard:
-----------------------------------------------
SQL Server Setup failed to obtain system account information for the ASPNET account. To proceed, reinstall the .NET Framework, and then run SQL Server Setup again.
-----------------------------------------------
I'm running Windows XP pro.
I'm attempting to install all the sql components simmultaneously.
I've read on http://www.sqlteam.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=60606 that I need to change a setting in the Service tab of the websites properties dialog in the Internet Information Services manager, but that dialog doesn't have a "Service" tab!
Any thoughts?
Thanks!
Ian

Ok, I have a question for you... What?
What do you mean? what are you talking about? what database? SQL Server?

First of all get a good .NET book and read it. Now, looks like you were able to read one value from your table, so it should be simple to read all records. Look at the following sample code, supply right values for connection and query variables.
<br />
<br />
DataSet dataset = new DataSet();<br />
string connection = "Put connection string here";<br />
string query = "Write your SQL SELECT clause here";<br />
<br />
OleDbConnection conn = new OleDbConnection(connection);<br />
OleDbDataAdapter adapter = new OleDbDataAdapter();<br />
adapter.SelectCommand = new OleDbCommand(query, conn);<br />
adapter.Fill(dataset);<br />
<br />
Now at this point you have a "filled" DataSet. To store value in an ArrayList object
<br />
<br />
ArrayList arrList = new ArrayList();<br />
<br />
foreach (DataRow dr in dataset.Tables[0].Rows)<br />
{<br />
arrList.Add(dr[0]);<br />
}<br />

OK I think this is a VB/C# question but I think I know what you are talking about..
You want to display a messsage in 2 lines like;
Hello
World!
If so, you message box goes like this
*------
VB
*------
MessageBox.Show("Hello" & vbLf & "World!","Message" ,MessageBoxButtons.OK,MessageBoxIcon.Information)
*------
C#;P
*------
MessageBox.Show("Hellow \n World!","Message" ,MessageBoxButtons.OK,MessageBoxIcon.Information)
Greetings

This morning my VS.NET 2005 crashed on me while at the same time SQLEXPRESS had thrown up (on its own) a command prompt, it was doing something to my file. So I had to kill the entire process because it was not responding.
From then on I have not been able to connect to an MDF file. I am able to create new databases on my instance of SQLEXPRESS, my TCPIP and Named Pipes are working, but whenever I try to add an MDF file it times out. In the event viewer I am getting periodic messages about my TCPIP for SQL not being valid, but I don't see how considering I am able to create new databases and the client and the service are configured on the same port.
For what its worth, the LOG file does not show SQLSERVER express listening on any ports.

I have a column in SQL Server with ‘nvarchar’ data type; I entered some string in Sanskrit language from enterprise manager of SQL Server. But when ever I search for that string through C# SQL command, it’s not finding. Record set containing null data.
My C# SQL Command is like this...
"SELECT SlNo FROM Noun where Word = '"+textBox1.Text+"'";
Same command is able to search English string from the same column.
I hope U understood my problem.
Can anybody please help me?
Thanks in Advance
Cheers

when some unicode characters (like sanskrit , chinese) are entered into DB , they are encoded in sense that a character in sanskrti is converted to say "&55;" & then it is stored in db .

What do you mean by this? Are you talking about an image or varbinary column?
