Cold Fusion
Stanley Pons and Martin Fleischmann, chemists at the University of Utah, claimed that they produced a fusion reaction at room temperature.
The experiment has been re-created many times since then, however the results have not been duplicated to the point where the claims of Pons and Fleischmann could be validated

They said they had demonstrated cold fusion. The finding was later disputed.

Fred Cohen set out to create and run a set of structured experiments using "a computer program that can affect other computer programs by modifying them in such a way as to include a (possibly evolved) copy of itself" for a computer security seminar.
Len Adleman, Cohen's PhD supervisor is credited with proposing the name "virus".
Also interesting, according to http://vx.netlux.org/lib/afc04.html
"The first computer virus probably appeared in the late 1950s or early 1960s as an experiment in operating systems design. Mathematical theories of self-replicating automata has a fairly long history prior to that time. In the 1970s, the Xerox worm program [33] demonstrated the ability to propagate through a network. The worm accidentally caused denial of services in an isolated instance, apparently due to a bit error."

What is a ghoti?

ghoti is "fish"
gh from tough
o from women
ti from motion
|
|
|
|
|
ghoti is another spelling for fish (GB Shaw, I believe, originated this as a demonstration of the difficulties in the English language).
The 'gh' is the sound 'f' from 'rough', the 'o' is the sound 'i' from 'women', 'ti" is the sound "sh" from 'nation'.
