Sorry,
Next time I'll just not bother trying to help.
Viruses written for Windows 95 (and compiled in 32bit) can still have an affect on XP FYI.

Yeah, I know. I've been doing this for nearly 30 years now. In your post, you didn't mention anything about Windows 95, you said Windows 3.1.
Viruses that worked under DOS and Windows 3.x normally spread themselves by infecting the boot secotr of floppies and hard drives. They don't work under NT Kernel O/S's because the boot loaders are very different and the permissions required to get low-level access to the media to spread themselves wasn't available to them. Also, those viruses were written in 8 and 16-bit code. Most of which just doesn't work under and NT Kernel anymore...
What FAR more common now-a-days is to spread by email. Even then, just turning off the monitor isn't a juicy enough target today. That's just merely annoying. The current target is turning your entire machine into a zombie that can be remotely controlled.
But, yes, viruses that worked under Windows 3.x and 9x CAN still work, IF they a machenism to spread that is still in use today AND IF the environment that these viruses need to execute is still on your machine, which is far less likely in an XP world.
You can help all you want, just make sure your replying to the correct post. Since you didn't reply to the original poster, he/she did NOT get an email that said you replyed to when he/she posted. The only person that gets an email that you replyed is the person who's post you replyed to.

Hi
I post this thread in SysAdmin as IIS does not suit the rest of the forums.
I am using IIS 5.1 on WinXp. I have created an Asp.Net website using Visual Studio 2005. Asp.Net 2.0 was used.
I shared the folder containing the website on IIS and it is added to the 'Default Website' folder under the 'Websites' folder in IIS. The folder's name is LiveEventPortal.
When I opened the folder in IIS and tried to broswse the ASP.Net master page (right click -> browse), IE appeared and displayed an error message.
Server Error in '/LiveEventPortal' Application.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Failed to access IIS metabase.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.
Exception Details: System.Web.Hosting.HostingEnvironmentException: Failed to access IIS metabase.
The process account used to run ASP.NET must have read access to the IIS metabase (e.g. IIS://servername/W3SVC). For information on modifying metabase permissions, please see http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=267904.
What could be the problem and how to enable the master page to display correctly?
I guess that the problem lies with the metabase, although i'm not sure what a metabase is.

I've never used IIS - so I can only suggest changing servers (http://www.aprelium.com) Abyss X1.2.3.0.5 supports ASP.NET2 and works fine.
Try using PHP instead!

Well, if you have an app that is leaking memory (like, a service), you're gonna miss the "tabula rasa" effect of a shutdown.
HDD issues: most certainly not. If a program has a hibernation problem, and the problem's symptoms are many attempts to access different sectors on your HDD, THEN you might actually degrade your hdd. But I beliebe that Windows' use of the swap-file has more serious impact on your HDD-lifespan than any other program will have.
Cheers,
Sebastian

Hi guys...
I'm having some problems with installing iis...
I shutdown my computer on friday after working on a new site in VisualStudio (server is localhost). I left it in a fine state, so i thought. Booted my computer on Sunday to do a little more and was unable to start my local host server! I cant think what would have caused this? Its now Tuesday and am still unable to start the server. I have un-installed iis and tried to re-install, unfortunatly i was prompted with multiple msg's (unable to copy certain .dll files) i've tried various fix it cmds like: esentutl /p %windir%\security\database\secedit.sdb
This or any other command i have tried has not worked. Microsoft has lots of info about how to try and resolve this issue but all have been unsuccessful.
Can anyone help me?

Hi...Thanks for repling.
Below are the last server related reports (as i have un-installed iis)
The Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) service terminated with the following error:
Not enough resources are available to complete this operation.
&
The server could not bind to the transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{D2B9A563-7193-4880-A62F-6376F2F734DA}.
I had a hard drive fail 2 weeks ago, i installed win xp from my disc (SP1) then installed iis and then installed sp2...at the moment i am tring to uninstall sp2 using the recovery console (cmd: $ntservicepackunistall$\spuninst)as i am unable(not visible)to remove it from add/remove programs with show updates check box 'checked'. I thought if i could remove sp2 and try to reinstall iis then install sp2 again!!
What do you think?

I want to retrieve the usage of CPU and Memory of certain process as well as the whole system on Windows 2000 just as the task manager does. I am not sure whether my problem has been solved by others on code project, but after a long search without answer I decide to publish it here. Your direct answer or a useful link will be highly appreciated. Thank you very much.

Welcome, you have posted your question in the right place.
juventas wrote: can access most files except the folders in the documents and settings of individual users whose accounts were password protected
What is the file system of your old hard drive. In my opinion, you might use NTFS permission and you do not have a right to access to those folder.
juventas wrote: is there any way to retreive the files from those folders?
Try to log on your computer with administrator use right and take ownership of the folder that prevent you to access the file.

Check the below information:
- Check an ip address of the system that you ping from whether it has a difference network id.
- Check your system ist16 whether it configure to use IPSec or not.
