Hello all,
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to read and write to a XML file that is on the server side from a web browser only using html and javascript?
Chad

|
|
|
|
No, that is not possible. You can't access any file system from Javascript, neither the client files nor the server files.

I thought so. Thanks anyway.

Yes, you can using the AJAX "concept" (i.e. using the XMLHTTP object in various browsers).
See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AJAX[^]

Yeah, you're right, because you need to actually do something on the server side that updates the xml. My bad...

Not really bad. Sometimes it's good to explore possibilities that lie somewhat outside the original criteria, expecially when they are impossible.

as a newbie, I have developed a simple administrative app that lists members of our mailing list. ON the viewing page, checkboxes are dynamically listed along with the member info. When one checks a box and clicks 'edit', i want the item checked to open into the edit page with it's appropriate data. Problem: I can get the checkbox associated to an id number on the viewing page. I just can't seem to figure out how to send that id and data to the edit page. any help or suggestions would be great. can provide code examples if needed.

Hi all,
Currently I am developping a C# web service in which it acts as a proxy server for internet access & navigation.
It is supposed that the web service should receives requests from mobile devices clients such as cell phone or pocket PC then it should send back the WML pages for the clients. By the way, the clients application will be J2ME application. Anyone can help me by ideas or resources for that ?
Thanks you very much in advance.

I have an application wherein at user-login yearcode(2005) and usercode is saved and all the transactions are bound with yearcode and usercode.
My problem is how to carryforward previous year's (2005) unfinished transactions to new yearcode(2006) when user login with new yearcode(2006).

It's hard to give you an answer to this, as the information you have given us is not very in depth. How are you saving the data, where are you saving it to? How do you know when a transaction is not closed?
If it is saved in a DB and this is giving you a lot of trouble, then i would say that there is probably a problem with your database structure.

I need a web app that will take a 2gig+ file and put it on a server.
.net craps out after 2 gigs and everything ive tryed has been futile.
So basicly, I the client have a 2+ gig file(lets say its 10 gigs).
I open up my browser and go to example.com/mywebapp.htm
select the file for upload and bam, upload.
I cant use ftp(security), or any other protocol.other than http. The only clientside software that can be used it the browser.
Ive looked at http://www.codeproject.com/vb/net/VbNetFileTransfer.asp?df=100&forumid=59175&exp=0&select=1144795
but it dosent seem to do the Job.
I really need help with this one guys.

Hi Kamal
Have you considered creating a webservice, and making a client app that will send the file in chunks of say 10 MB to the webservice? This way you'll be able to continue if communications break down, and transfers are by HTTP.
Kind regards - Jakob

Thats how i would ideally do it, but the client wants it to all be done through the browser. So any splitting that is to happen would happen in the browser via the web app. Any suggesetions, or links to people that have done something similar to this?

Hi Coolshad
Please don't take this wrong - but I think it is a good idea to try and search for solutions first on the net, before you ask for help. Specifically because there will almost always be someone out there who's tried the solutions you're asking for. I don't know if you've tried searching, before posting the question here, but I tried searching Google for your question: "Chat using asp?" and the first reply was:
http://www.asp101.com/articles/misc/chat.asp[^]
Try it out
Kind regards - Jakob

Hi again
You only mentioned "Asp", not the ".net" part - that's why I got it wrong
I tried searching on Google for "chat using asp.net" and got this article as the top one:
http://www.codeproject.com/aspnet/AliAspNetChat.asp[^]
Maybe you can use it?
Kind regards - Jakob
