Hi,
We already have a windows service set up to write to binary file for "our" custom events. Need to translate this binary file into comma delimited text file - how would we go about doing that? Can we just some built in VS2005 functions?
any ideas/thoughts much appreciated.
Thank you for your time.

Use the following C# to convert your binary to a string.
Byte FileBinary;
string file = ASCIIEncoding.Unicode.GetString(FileBinary);
Without know what the file looks like I can't tell you the best way to make the csv. You could use SQL Server and a DTS job, you could use Excel, or use the TextWriter class in .net and do it yourself.

But of course, that's all a "high level" overview of things

Hi - could you elaborate a bit more - we have a file saved in binary form on server.
ex.
string _path= "C:\Projects\200608021124238439.events";
FileStream fs = File.OpenRead(path)
BinaryReader br = new BinaryReader(fs);
Response.write (br.readstring());
The above is not working - resulting in "Unable to read beyond the end of the stream."
thanks.

hi,
Dim strFilePath As String = test.txt
Dim strFileName As String = Path.GetFileName(strFilePath)
Dim fs As FileStream
Dim strContentType As String
fs = File.Open(strFilePath, FileMode.Open)
Dim bytBytes(fs.Length) As Byte
fs.Read(bytBytes, 0, fs.Length)
fs.Close()
Response.AddHeader("Content-disposition", _
"attachment; filename=" & strFileName)
Response.ContentType = "application/octet-stream"
Response.BinaryWrite(bytBytes)
Response.End()

If you are using 2.0 you can use the System.IO.Compression classes
only two letters away from being an asset
