I have a problem with a web page I am working on, which only happens in Firefox 1.0.7. In other versions of Firefox it is fine, and IE and Opera do not display the problem either.
Basically I have an image within a div tag in the top left of the page, and in 1.0.7, a 10px gap appears above the image.
I have searched for a solution to this on Google, and everywhere I can think of. I found mentions of a css bug in 1.0.7 which causes DIV tags to be rendered bigger than their specified height, and for the content to appear outside the DIV. However, I could not find any solutions for this problem.
The page is at www.ortussearch.com/default2.aspx if anyone would like to take a look. The image in question is the logo in the top left.
Any suggestions would be welcome, as I am pulling my haor out with this.

My client seemed all smug with his web savvy when he announced to me that he used Firefox, and that there was a problem with the layout in it - implying I hadn't tested the site in Firefox.
After doing some research, I was able to correctly predict that he was running 1.0.7, and explain to him that it was an out of date version, and the majority of Firefox users would be running the most recent version. He has since told me not to worry about the bug, but I would still like to crack it because it is just annoying, and you never know when it might crop up again on a future job.

I happen to have version 1.0.7 still installed, and I can verify that I see the same problem.
Have you found out if the extra space is above the menu div, or inside the div above the image tag?

I'm not sure. I don't have access to a machine with Firefox 1.0.7 on it, so I just try making changes and then have to ask if the bug has gone away. Its very frustrating!
From what I did manage to find out about this bug, it is something to do with the height of the DIV. I have got the height of the menu div set to 100%. I don't really need that in there anymore, so I will try removing it and see if that fixes it. Can't actually work on this site until I get home later though.

You can download[^] version 1.0.7 and install side by side with your current version. The only limitation is that you can only run one version of Firefox at a time.

Thanks, I didn't realise you could still get the old versions.

I tried removing the height attribute, but it made no difference.
I did downlaod and install version 1.0.7 though, so I can have a better crack at fixing this error. If I ever crack it and will post the solution, just for future reference.

I finally cracked this one.
The gap was inside the 'menu' div. The problem was caused by the 'float:left' in the 'menu' div. I took it out and the gap above the logo disappeared. Turns out the float was actually doing anything useful anyway. The layout remained the same.

What book(s) would you recommend to someone who has decades of experience developing software, but zero experience and zero knowledge about any kind of software development related to the web?
Obviously, if there were a specific area within web development of interest, you could recommend books in that area. But this is for someone who knows NOTHING about ANYTHING related to web development. Ideally, it would be nice to have a not-too-terribly-in-depth book that summarizes all the technologies involved in web development, plus other tutorial-like books on specific technologies.
What would you recommend?
Thanks.

If you really know nothing about web development, I would start with a books that just deals with the basics of html and css. You need a good foundation in that before you can start doing actual web development.
I recommend this book:

Problem description:
A server based application creates a file with a constant filename (data.csv or something like that).
The user has access to this file via a link like <a href="data.csv">download your file here</a>
If the user creates the file the first time, he will get a download with the correct content.
If the user now creates a new Version of this file, which contains new content, the download "fails" if a proxy server is involved in the transfer between web-server and client. The proxy delivers the old version out of his cache instead of the actual version from the server.
Meta-Tags like
<meta http-equiv="expires" content="0"> or
<meta http-equiv="cache-control" content="no-cache">
might work for a html-page, but how to tell a download file things like that? (My practical experiences show, that those meta tags do not really work for html-files either.)
Is there any (proven) way to inhibit the caching process on a proxy-server?

Anyone any ideas as to how to get this to work in IE6/7? (When i say work i mean, the top left of the iframe should be 50 from top and 50 from left and the bottom right should be 30 from right and 30 from bottom, this also needs to work with percentages)
Works in firefox.....

Try setting the padding and margins of the BODY to 0, and set the margins of the IFRAME to 0.
The default margins for several elements in IE is not 0, so you have to set it expicitly.

Hi all
I have strange problem with flash movie.
Take a look at the following code snippet:
//***********************************************************///
<object classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000" codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,0,0"
width="400" height="300" id="movie" align="">
<param name="movie" value="http://www.waves.com/staging/objects/flash/videos/bcl_vdo_stream_small.swf" />
<embed src="http://www.waves.com/staging/objects/flash/videos/bcl_vdo_stream_small.swf" quality="high" width="400"
height="300" name="movie" align="" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"
pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer" />
|
//*****************************************************************///
When I save this code as HTML file on my local machine and open it with IE,
I can see the movie, but not the player itself!
If I put this HTML file on remote machine, where the movie is, I see both the movie and player.
The most annoing:
If I change the URL of the movie to my local machine, AND I HAVE THE SAME SWF FILE LIKE ON WEBSITE, I CAN'T SEE NEITHER MOVIE NOR PLAYER!
I am going crazy about this, I am a newcomer in Flash and have no idea what is the matter.
Every idea will be appreciated Thanks
Igor

Flashing text or blinking text is just plain abnoxious http://www.catb.org/~esr/html-hell.html[^], but I think you can use the <blink> tag. Don't do it though, for the sake of the people viewing your page!

Thanks for your reply Steve and I appreciate your comments. I want to make the telephone number really stand out. I've made it bigger and changed the colour. So if I didn't use flashing can you suggest an alternative that will really 'push it in the face' so to speak

Just make it bigger.
If i came to your page and it had flashing text i'd be leaving very quickly...
