I have 2 identical PCs which will be running the exact same software and configuration. Both PC were purchased with OEM version of MS Windows XP pro. Both PCs need to be setup identically and will be running at different locations within the group I work for, on indepentant networks.
What I intend to do, is set up one PC then create an image of the PC and restore it onto the other PC. This will obviously mean that both PCs now have the same licence key for Windows XP. To keep things legal, I would want to delete the licence key from the 2nd PC and then enter the key that was supplied with the PC.
Can anyone tell me how to do this please?
Thanks

As far as I know, OEM version of windows mean the operating system already install on this machine.

Based on your information, you might use disk duplication method to install this software. In my opinion, you should purchase a license of windows based on your demand and you won't have the problem with install this software when you try to use this method.
If you use unattendend installation (use answer file) to run automate setup, I think you won't have this problem because you could edit the answer for the specific copy of windows that you need to install.

Hi @
Just back from an interview and I am still pondering about this question they asked me in the interview.
Q: Where is the information about the processes that are running is stored?
I was thinking aloud that, Well, you can view the current processes in the task manager. If it is a service service control manager keeps track of it. Otherwise it might be stored somewhere in the registry.
Any concrete thoughts?

in the registry ????????
processes are managed by the system, when it is running (the PC is turned on, and the OS is running), so, ,why would you need to store such an information on the hard disk ?
and these infos are stores in RAM, in the OS reserved memory.

In a data structure somewhere in the kernel address space. There's no real benefit in knowing where it's stored in kernel address space, since there's no way you can directly read or write it from user mode, and no documented way of manipulating it from kernel mode.
If you want to know what processes are running, use EnumProcesses from the Process Status Helper library (PSAPI.DLL) or CreateToolhelp32Snapshot from the Tool Help API. The former works on NT 4.0 and later, while the latter works on Windows 9x and on Windows 2000 and later (but not NT 4.0).

Hi, I have two computer running windows xp professional and connect network with each other. Both machine installed quick book pro. I have shared the quick file from the first machine to the second machine. I set the permission for the second machine to read only. And I'm sure that the permission that set is correct. I have test the other file (doc, excel, text file...) with the permission and it work as what i expect.
But for the quick book file, when it open, it display a message box for me that the file could not open because it is not in a multi user mode. Then I went to the first and switch the open file to multi user mode and return back to the second machine. But when i open the file, it still could not open the file and the message box also need me to open the file in multi user mode. Now I do not know how to solve the problem. Does anyone know the solution to solve this problem.

Did you buy the multi-user version of Quick books or just install the single user version twice?
Never had an issue doing it with the multi-user version before. Always works fine for me,

I do not know whether it is a multi-user or single version. I just use the same CD to install its twice.

Once you changed your company file on your main system to multi user mode did it display (multi-user)(username) at the top of the program bar? Check that it is displaying in multi-user mode then check you have created at least two accounts to access the company file one for each system, as you are unable to access the company file using the same account on two systems.

I found it change the last label of the title bar to (multi-user) but didn't display the user name.

I create the same windows account and password on both machine in order to mapped network drive without having to type user name and password. But the target machine that need to check the data is not using this account. It is using another windows account and I'm sure that the permission to access the file on share folder is set correctly.

Hi
Can some one tell me how long can windows run until it finally restarts by itself. Or in other words what is the length of the timer.
With Regards

List of websites by latest uptime figure[^].
There you can see some Windows 2000 servers that have been running for more than three years without a reboot. Presumably they're making use of firewalls or other workarounds to avoid applying patches that will require rebooting their servers. Many security patches don't actually need a reboot if you stop whatever processes are using the files that need to be updated.
The methodology is given here[^] - the TCP protocol includes some sequence numbers which are predictable and can therefore tell you how long it has been since the server was restarted.
You can, I think, configure some hardware with a watchdog timer so that if the operating system doesn't reset the timer for a certain period, the hardware assumes that the OS has crashed or hung and will reboot automatically. See your hardware manuals for information on this.

Windows doesn't have a timer that triggers and automatic restart. Provided the software running on it is stable and plays nice, Windows, like just about any other O/S, can run for years without any problems.

It's very unlikely you'll gett an answer to this question here. CodeProject is dedicated to supporting development on the Windows platforms. You'd be better off looking for a forum that supports Z/OS. You might get lucky and someone with Z/OS development experience might see your post, but don't count on it.

According to SDK and other sources, under Win NT, 2K, XP and later, only regular way to acccess floppy from programs is via CreateFile for physical floppy, and having linear access.
But it has issues with non strictly PC format floppies, even if them are well readable with PC's FDC chip.
Does someone knows is possible to access some undocumented, 'hidden' calls, where we can address floppy with geometry - CHS. Somewhere such functions inside floppy driver(s) must exist.
Mentioned issues: for instance it is not possible to read 10th sector on track by DD floppies (used by many old computers).

I have done this in the past (NT 3.51)
I used the source from the floppy driver (in the DDK).
Inside the driver, there are quite a few supported physical formats. So I took a rarely used format and adjusted it to my needs (which was to read/write/format IBM System 36 Desktop-diskettes (26 sectors, double-sided, 512 or 256 bytes per sector, 80 cylinders)).
It worked like a charm, the biggest problem was to find out the sector gap parameter. For reading the diskette, i used trial and error to find out the lowest and highest values that worked, then I used the value in the middle of them.
Then i could experiment the gap used at formatting and writing, the same way as for the reading gap.
So you will need at least one "original" diskette to find out the gap at read. Make sure you can read all sectors on a cylinder , just sector 0 won't do!
