*Excellent* idea.
There were about half a dozen people looking to write articles on non-programming issues such as design, deployment, testing - and even stuff like work place relations and survival.
I'd be very keen to have these sorts of articles and would like to open a new dedicated section.

I have already begun working on it. I am planning on doing a 6-10 day project and having one article per day with a complete write-up on each days activities along with code, etc.

Articals like these would be cool... I've been working with computers for years but being a student means I normally don't get the same sort of experience a full time employee would get in a company. Would be nice to get views and articals on that sort of stuff..

This is a very good idea, I myself have considered writing an article on the best framework for the development of applications. Keep us all up to date on where you are with this, otherwise I might actually do something like this in my nonexistent free time

AFAIK, no.
Borland cooked up a few new keywords in their "C++ compiler" to be able to use their Object Pascal modules, but it's not portable.
Also is the problem that Borland (as the only Win32 compiler vendor I'm aware of) still uses OMF (or whatever it was since Win16) while the rest of the world speaks (X)COFF.

If you are writing about the VCLs, VC++ cannot directly use them. The alternative is to creative an ActiveX control or component derived from the VCL or create a Win32 API DLL.

Can anyone give me some advice on writing an automatic updater or simply point me to an already existing example?
Some of the feature I am looking for:
- check for updated files over http and ftp protocols or simply file based for Intranet applications
- replace running executables itself or DLLs used by the application with the updates
- just show new documentation, tips, announcements etc.. when available
- Allows updates based on dates or on file versions

I've searched for one too but i found nothing, so i started my own few time ago, it should be ready in a month or so. I am putting lots of features in it and making it so any program can use it with very little amount of code.

You can implement this using a WebResourceProvider that can check if you're running an older version of an application, and download the latest version of component modules if necessary.
Of course, there are also other issues involved. For one, your replaceable DLLs should be loaded at run-time (using LoadLibrary()) so that you can load them after the latest versions have been downloaded.

Thank you for pointing me to your _GREAT_ WebResourceProvider article.
Now regarding the LoadLibrary() stuff, I think that to avoid coding using LoadLibrary() we should launch an external program and exit. Then after everything is done the external program could start the calling software!
Just an idea!

In my program all methods of update will be suported: lauching an external program(ive made it wizard-like), making all via code in your program, making it read some script and work in "silent mode" or any method someone would like i can put it there, and if someone wants to add anything it will be opensource of course.

Check out the DDJ archive for an article on writing an autoupdater. basically an .exe file when executed connectes to a remote server, does a file version check on client machine and then uses http:// or ftp:// to download the newer version of the file. Sorry I do not seem to remember the exact link to the updater article and code at DDJ. so checkout ddj.com

You could either- Learn HTML - dead easy mate
- Or type your article in Word and save as HTML
If your on this site, you probably code in C++ - so you will have no bother at all learning a bit of HTML...

Sometimes colleagues send us resumes in Word generated HTML. So that we can put in on our site. But it's very hard to make the HTML look like we want it to. For every single tag, Word puts individual style tags and a lot of complicated mshtml stuff too. We usually copy paste into notepad and then reformat it manually, which is easier than editing Word-html
