But--weekend warriors aside--what professional VC++ programmer hasn't needed to use Visual Basic from time to time? Bring on the Visual Basic section!!! Eric J. A language selection war again! I voted No! but to be honest, I code VB as well, so I kinda don't mind the VB only if it is as a sister site, few mentioned already as another CP dotcom for VB would't heart! One thing though, I wish to maintain my level of C++/VC++, and I guess many (counting the C/C++/MFC coders only! ) would support my opinion for having this site solely for MFC stuff, a lot of coders once they find out about the power of C, C++ and the ease of use of MFC, would deffinitly try to learn it! I mean come on VB coders, sometimes or maybe most of the time, the windows API comes to the save! and guess what! It was written in C! One very rather premitive example is when I tried to use the Help files in one of the VB apps! I couldn't solve it W/O the WinHelp API! I guess its like this, if I could learn Assembly language (I know a little for help), I put my full effort to learning it rather than C, but I say why when I could do almost the same app with the power of C, and in which I also could use ASM codes in case needed? With VB, you can quickly write an app! but with C/C++/MFC, you write Strong, Fast, Smaller apps in size and full featured apps from the GUI and the Functinality POV. Have fun everybody! Take Visual Basic, you have to go out of your way to use the API directly. Now Microsoft want us to use .NET frameworks so we 'have' no need to use the API directly. The point I'm making is that all applications developed with .NET will suffer from performance issues and not have that 'cutting' edge feel, whilst Microsoft will develop all their apps in VC++, beating any competition hands down. And as for VB, well it SUCKS big time. My cat can even write VB. Simplistic has its penalties, anybody with an IQ of 20+ can use VB to write a 'so called' windows program. There's no ifs, ands or buts! But what you said has got nothing to do with VB. I believe that Windows Operating System brought all of us to this stage! Remember those old days of DOS programming whilst you had to know what a GFX Card is if you were going to develop a GUI! Or you had to know what PCL is if you were going to print some papers within your program! Today, you've got this or that built-in APIs ready! Don't tell me that calling those APIs are called "programming". It's like putting those buttons you've already mentioned on the form!!! I to feel Micrsoft want the real programmers to use an encapsulated environment, its to their benefit. We write a program lugging or using a ton of .NET dlls whereas Microsoft will use tools to gain optimum advantage. Why cant Microsoft enhance the productivity of VC++ like Borland did with C++ Builder? Anyway we've gotta sit back and see how the market adapts, to be fair I think .NET will be a success, my only reservation is will Microsoft WONT use .NET to write their software! It is my feeling as well that M$ would just use VC++ to do more things/toys for us to play with WHILEST them nonono! Mehdi, Things developed since 1960s so much so far! I honestly learnt the VB since VB4 released but knew C from 1992 and then C++ by 1995! You see, any C/C++ can easily be VBer! While vice versa! I doubt it!
