I'm sorry if I'm being stupid, but could you walk me through that?
For example, I have tried this:
Public Class TitleControl : Inherits UserControl
Public Page as BasePage
Public Sub Page_Load(Source as Object, E as EventArgs)
Initialize(Page.DB)
End Sub
Public Sub Initialize(SourceDB as DBClass)
...
End Sub
End Class
And the compiler stops at "Initialize(Page.DB)" and says:
System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
However, the DB property of the page SHOULD be set to an instance of DBClass, since I do that in the Load() event handler of the BasePage class. And if I understand correctly, the Load() of a page happens before the Load() of the controls inside the page.
I'm probably doing the re-casting wrong, since Im' just guessing at the syntax for that.

After Public Page as BasePage declaration Page is Nothing or null
You can't access Page.DB if Page is Nothing or null and System.NullReferenceException is thrown

The control has a property named Page. If you declare a variable with the same name, that will override the property. As you never assign any value to your variable, it will always be null.
Just use the property, and cast it to the class BasePage:
((BasePage)Page).DB

I have a class that uses string builder which produces a email body that is sent out by the system. My problem is that when i receive the email, random "! " characters are inserted into the text. If anyone out there has seen this problem before, let me know.

For additional information, i place a bunch of vbCRLF after every line and still end up with these random "!" and spaces.
Im also aware of projects migrating from IIS 5 to IIS 6 creates this problem. How can i fix it now

HI guys I have a bit of a challenging question for you one that has had me stumped for the last couple of days.
I'll give you concept behind this.
I am working on a system that is used within a hospital, and the situation I am currently working on kind of goes like this.
A patient may be able to visit a variety of doctors during the course of a treatment, Diagnosis etc .i.e Cancer patient.
Now lets say that all these doctors give a patient a document to read regarding the diagnosis results etc. Now if each doctor gave the patient the patient a piece of paper this is bound to get lost. So a posible solution to this dilema is that each department already has a "Standard" document that try give to patients with Dietary advice and some Tailored advice that give to the patient etc.
These documents are now currently kept as Word Documents on the Hospital network, but as you would expect with large systems these are scattered on various locations on the network. Before you suggest saving the Docs to the database, we can't do this as they still want the ability to update the documents without having to save them to a DB. I can get round this by storing virtual paths in a DB. Not desirable but works.
The proposed solution is to try and Merge all these documents into one Document on the server and print it out for the patient at the end of his examination.
The issue that I have is that as per MS you cant install and automate word on the server

So I can't have word on the server. Secondly we have a myriad of different versions of word on the network, and not one of them is Word 2003, hence no XML.
Thirdly the client cannot afford to pay for the purchase of third party software i.e Soft artisans office writer.
How am I going to solve this problem? So far all possible solutions I have tried are failing and I am looking for any other possible solutions.

Microsoft does not recommend, however it is possible to word automation.
Option 1) Server side Office Automation. If you do not want the server to be impacted by server side office automation memory leaks, bugs, reset & restart issues then you can always designate a separate computer that provides document merging service as a COM+ service.
Option 2) Use Windows Sharepoint

Thanks for the replies, But Installing word on the server is not an option, I know it's possible to use word automation, but MS will not support the server once they have find out Word is installed on the server, Installing word on another server and using remotingg, would require word to be installed on a server, so in effect still having word on a server, Question is would a Admin want Office installed on any of his servers, knowing thier could be a potential security threat on that server?
Using Sharepoint is not an option either as this would be telling the clinet they would need to install/Licence Sharepoint on thier server.

How can I dynamically determine which environment my code is running in? For instance I would like for my apps to dynamically determine if they need to use the DEV connection strings or Production connection strings (within my DAL).
By doing so I would avoid having to manually edit connection strings every time I make changes to my app. Appreciate your help.

Why don't you have a web.config for dev, and another one for production?

I am not sure if that would work because when we will publish the website the development copy of web.config will be promoted to production

hi
i have a strange problem with OutPut cache working fine on development box and not working on production server
background : @outputCahce directive is fine, but wanted to make centralized output cache , so i have some setting section in web config defining what page and how to cache
and in my Base Page i having following :

DateTime expires = DateTime.Now.AddSeconds(duration ); <br />
Response.Cache.SetExpires(expires );
Response.Cache.SetValidUntilExpires(true);
Response.Cache.SetCacheability(HttpCacheability.ServerAndPrivate );
The problem is that on local machine it works fine: you load page, hit f5 or Ctrl+F5, and you see the server-cached version
on server it other : you see that browser do caching , but F5 will bring you fresh, not-cached by server page
used time-span printed with response.write on test pages
and i sure that caching block is working, i write to log to ensure that some page added to cache
done with ASP.Net 1.1 running IIS5 on dev and IIS6 on production
Web has many resources on output caching but i not found any solution for this
Any ideas guys ?

Hi,
I want to include a .js file only for one particular page which is using master page. Since the .js file is very large and only for this particular page, I don't want to include it in Master page. Because it will add into every page that is using the master page.
Also, I dont' want to convert all the functions in .js file into string to register through RegisterClientScriptEvent, again, because the functions are too long to convert.
Is there a way to do it by NOT using the ways mentioned above?
Any help would be appreciated!

Add the tag to the Page.Header.Controls collections. I don't think that there is a class for the script tag, so you have to use HtmlGenericControl to make one.

I did use RegisterClientScriptInclude to make it work.
But I try to pass Form1 into Javascript function , it won't let me do it. Note, Form1 is form from master page.
Any idea?

By the same behavior, do you mean you want to have it rewritten on server side? Or do you mean you want to generate the javascript from the server?
If it's the former, I would place the values in Session vars. Then use Server.Transfer or Response.Redirect
