Ray Cassick wrote: I always try to program for the smallest and then make the forms resizable upwards if the users wants to.
I use this technique too. Luckily was told that I did not need to support resolutions below 1024x768 so I had more space to play with.
Making forms cope sensibly with resizing can be interesting. Using anchor is limited. I used "Top, Left, Right " anchor for a text box and a user in UAT complained that the user interface looked horrible. She was always maximising her window and ended up with way wider text boxes then required. So I put in a minimum and maximum window size to make sure the display always looked sensible.
If you are using .Net 2.0 you could also look at using the various flow layout options available in Windows Forms.

Are you saying that re-sizing is a manual thing? or is there a way to programmaticlly change it under the covers ??

There are a few ways to do it (anchoring, code, layout panels, etc...) but it all takes some intervention on the part of the developer to implement it.

can you please elaborate. what do you mean "(anchoring, code, layout panels, etc)"
Thanks

By 'anchoring' I mean the use of the anchor properties of controls placed on a form to allow them to attach to one area and then stretch in another direction when the form gets re-sized. Works OK for basic stuff but complicated forms can cause issues.
By 'code' I mean capturing the current size of the form in the appropriate events and then manually resizing the controls using pure code. Lots of work and very hard to get right. It also tends to result in very 'brittle' code when you need to make changes in the design latter on.
By 'Layout Panels' I mean placing a layout panel on the form and then allowing that to adjust the size of container controls.
Good luck, and run a search or two in Google to get the rest. Sorry for being sketchy here, but this is one area where I could go done a slippery slope and end up writing code that I don't care to right for you. This is a 'give a man a fish vs. teach a man to fish' thing.
Hope you understand.

When running my program I get the following error message:
Line 1: Incorrect syntax near '82'.
Unclosed quotation mark before the character string ".
I have been trying to fix this for days now and it's driving me insane.
Any advice would help.

Do you want to post the code so we can see what you did wrong, or what? At the moment, the only thing we can suggest is to make sure your quote marks match up where they are supposed to.

Keep in mind how escaping quotations takes place in VB.NET
Label.Text = "Hello World, You can call me ""Jonathan""."
If you want " in your string, you need to double it up - one escapes the other. So for every instance of " in your string, you need to put in "".
Hope that helps!

My dataset binds to a textbox to display a particular record when I click a select button.
I clear the textboxes by clicking my clear button.
I receive an error that two bindings cannot be done on the same object whenever I tried to select a new record without closing the form.
Pls how should I bind the textbox to the dataset such that I will not have to close and open the form to select subsequents record.

I am having a problem with the VB 2005 ListView control using the Details view. I am basically using the ListView to display information from a database table.
The problem I am having is that one of the columns is concatenating the string that is being passed to it for one of the subitems, and not showing all of the text.
My questions would be, 1) Is there a property that I am not seeing that will keep the text from being cut short, and 2) Does the ListView support a multi-lined item that can wrap?

Is this the solution to the answer....I need to develop a code which checks the email provided for the email address and domain verification.........huh
|
|
|
|
|
The only way to see if an address is legitimate is to send an email to it with some kind of link that the receiver clicks on to tell you that they got it. The user clicks on that specially formed link and brings up a website that you supply. This site takes information from the link and uses it to determine who that user is and that the address that the email was sent to was good. There is no other method of determining, with ANY kind of reliability if an email address is good or not.

Ok, so basically i am trying to use a DataGrid, VB, and an Access database to keep track of some information. But I cant remember or i guess figure out how to make the information i want to go from a label, to display in a cell in the datagrid, and also some where in there update the database. Im figuring that the easiest and best way to do that would be to Update the database then redisplay it in the datagrid, but i just cant get the right code for it. Any help, MUCH Appreciated.

I am writing a function to check for invalid characters in a file befor written to db but when I run the project I get the following error: Conversion from string "06110-001-000" to type 'Boolean' is not valid.
Here is the code I have.
Function:
Public Function InvalidCharacterCheck(ByVal StringToCheck As String)
Dim InvalidChars As String() = {",", ".", "'"}
Dim B As String
For Each B In InvalidChars
If InStr(StringToCheck, B) Then
Return True
End If
Next B
Return False
End Function
Code to handle function:
If InvalidCharacterCheck(row("PartNumber") = True Or InvalidCharacterCheck(row("mostforwardpartnumber"))) = True Then
ErrorLog("Not Valid partnumber or Supercede partnumber: " & row("PartNumber"))
Else
Any suggestions?

Does anyone have a Screensaver app in vb.net 2.0 that I could use as a starter? I am looking for one that will just cycle through jpg's in a shared folder. I don't mind buying one for a few bucks but it would be nice to be able to have the code to customize it myself.

I think Visual Basic express edition comes with a starter pack that includes a screen saver.

Hello,
I am trying to make a scheduling application so I have a UI with checkboxes for every weekday and save the values in the DB. When the user wishes to make a new schedule, I don't want to allow conflicts,i.e 2 schedules running on a weekday at the same time. So if the previous schedule is for Monday, Tue, and Wed and the current is for some other days(maybe includes Wed, Mon, and Tue maybe doesn't). Problem is how do I check this, how can I verify that the schedule is not conflicting. I am first comparing the times before the days as if the time is not the same there will be no conflict.
Remember I only have to check the checked days against the stored checkdays in DB, or Do I?
Thanks b4 hand

When your user logins to the application, you should probably pull their schedule from the database and put it into a DataTable. This will enable you to quickly evaluate their selections against their pre-existing database content without having to make round-trips back and forth to the database.
Secondly, when the application begins running, you might want to enumerate all of your checkboxes against the DataTable, to find out which ones should be selected and which ones should not be selected, according to the database information stored in the DataTable.
Next, when a CheckBox event Checked is raised, you can take the arguments and pass them to the dataTable to see if they conflict with any data on file. If not, then write to your datatable the new data.
Just be sure to update the DataSource from your DataTable with a DataAdapter once you're finished.
