When you create a Solution in VS.NET by default it uses a folder inside the
My Documents called Visual Studio Projects and all other files goes to a
folder with the same name inside the C:\wwwroot folder.
Example :
C:\My Documents\Visual Studio Projects\mySolution\mySolution.sln
C:\wwwroot\mySolution\all other files
Well, wwwroot is a Virtual Directory created by IIS. So theoretically I can
create another Virtual Dir wherever I want and change the VS.NET default to
this new Virtual Dir
Example :
C:\My Documents\Visual Studio Projects\mySolution\mySolution.sln
C:\My Documents\Visual Studio Projects\mySolution\all other files
Explaining : I´ve created a Virtual Directory in C:\My Documents\Visual
Studio Projects and used the same name : Visual Studio Projects, so
everytime I create a new project, VS will put the : solution.sln + all other
files in the same directory in my HD.
That´s perfect, BUT when I test (debug/run) the webForm I´ll receive an
error msg like : "Unable to start debugging on a web server"
Basically I think that IIS is not allowing VS to run outside the original
wwwroot!
How can I fix this problem?

By default VS sets a webForm to GridLayout, but how can I can its default
settings to FlowLayout, so everytime I create a new webForm it appears in
Flow mode?

Is it possible to detect if .NET is installed on a users computer...?
If I created some DHTML controls in plain jane DHTML and was considering porting them to JScript. NET how would my site determine if they had one or the other...?
I'm assuming IE5/6 doesn't come with full support for client side JScript.NET...?
That would be great if it did though...
This JScript .NET is exciting me so...I love the fact its more OOP friendly....Private and protected, inheritance...the whole nine yards..
Thanx!

hello
I have an online war game that is built with ASP pages. My problem is this.........sometimes a player will see a page that has not refreshed (just brings back an old page) itself. This sometimes happens with an ASP page that only reads from a database.
Therefore i need the code that forces the users browser to reload the page.
thanks

You can try to use:
Response.AddHeader "Pragma", "no-cache"
So the page won't be cached and will be downloaded each time requested
Or another way, try to use this one too:
Response.Expires = -1
as a first line in your asp code. I think the second is the right, but who knows which is better?

Suppose I simply wanted to derive from TextBox and use my derived class on a web form. How is that done?
Apparently it is *not* to simply derive from the class:
namespace mycontrols
{
[DefaultProperty("Text"),
ToolboxData("<{0}:MyEdit runat=server></{0}:MyEdit >")]
public class MyEdit : System.Web.UI.WebControls.TextBox
{
....
}
}
and then expect to be able to simply declare an instance of MyEdit in your web form.

Well, this *is* the way to do it. Only that if you do it in the same project you will not be able to add to the controls toolbar. If you do it on a new project, then everything will work. On MSDN there are tutorials on doing this.

PS: this doesn't happen in WinNT and Win2K.

I created a connection using Visual Studio´s 'Connect to a Database' tool,
from the Tools menu and the connection seems to be OK.
Then I created an aspx page to connect using the connection string that was
created by VS and an error msg occurs :
private void Page_Load(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
{
OleDbConnection myCon = new OleDbConnection();
myCon.ConnectionString = "Provider=SQLOLEDB.1;Integrated
Security=SSPI;Persist Security Info=False;User ID=KA;Initial
Catalog=Northwind;Data Source=KA;Use Procedure for Prepare=1;Auto
Translate=True;Packet Size=4096;Workstation ID=KA;Use Encryption for
Data=False;Tag with column collation when possible=False";
myCon.Open();
}
The error msg is : Login failed for user 'KA\ASPNET'.

It is very possible that you didn't give ASPNET, the account that is created for ASP.NET worker processes, access to your Northwind database. I would just look to see if you have granted access to this first.

Hi,
I have a created a treeview based form which displays the files on the server. I want to be able to display the contents of files (for eg. notepad text) in a textarea and edit and save it to its location. Any ideas or insight will be very helpful.
Thanks.

I made a COM object and using it in my ASP. Now I want to use a typelib, like with ADO for example. How to do that? I remember I saw an article here about this thingy, but couldn't find it now

Are you looking for a way to include a file like the ADOVBS.INC in a particular page?
Nick Parker

Not exactly. The problem is that the COM object can be used by C++ application also, so itself contains several enams, and I want to access them from ASP.
Like if you inlcude this code before using ADO:
<!-- METADATA TYPE="typelib" uuid="00000205-0000-0010-8000-00AA006D2EA4" -->
You will be able to use adLockReadOnly for example (and other constants) without using additional INC file.
INC file won't very useful in my case, since every change in enam in COM object, I need to update the INC file also. And the second, INC file will be compiled with ASP file itself, so it can slow and overload the Server.
That's why I'm looking for the second way

Hi
how can i programmatically add rows to a displayed html table ?
Bryce

Using Classic ASP you would just build your SQL command as per normal, but instead of doing a SELECT command you would do an INSERT command.
Or you can use the .AddNew and .Fields methods of the recordset object to add it to an updateable recordset and then use .Update to push the new entry up to the database. You can use .UpdateBatch if you want to do a bunch of entries at once.
Personally I use stored procedures instead. Gets all that nasty SQL code out of your ASP page and you can pass data to a stored procedure using its parameters. All this adds up to never needing anything but the firehose cursor and a read-only lock type. This can be a dramatic performance increase. Of course, you do have to have acess to your DB server to do this.
