Hi, I am in a huge confustion on how to communicate from an asp.net (made by vb.net) web site to an application situated on the computer that is made by vb.net as well. My website is a trading website (maltatrade.org) and i need this application to be installed on every member's computer.
This application all it does is to check if there's a new comment for them. How can I make this happen please??

Adrian

Typically web applications involve two computers, the server and the client where the browser is running, so which "the computer" are you referring to?

so yes, the client one.
So, the client installs this application to get notified as soon as a new comment is recieved to him from the website of cource (maltatrade.org). I need to make a communication from the Client to the Server.
How can I make it happen please?? Thanks for your help.

Well you certainly have not provided a complete picture but it is possible that you simply need to poll your web server using a http request from the client as Paddy suggested using a Web Service would work for this.

I heard about web service. But i don't know how to build a web server All I want is just I have a database in the web server and I want the application (client application) to check the database and check if there is any new comment. If yes it returns a boolean true else false.

I guess you mean web "service". So what if you don't know how to do it. Any approach we suggest you won't know how to do correct? So complaining isn't going to help, do the required studying to learn, then develop your solution. That is what a professional developer does right?

which means, you need a Client App that will make a remote connection to a server(web server running a server database possibly) and check for the comment you want.
Your problem has been streamlined to
How can a Client application connect remotely to and access a database?
i havent done anything like this before, but i have seen a vb6 connection snippet using an IP address to connect to a remote server/database.

all i want to is to call a web service .. the web service work is just check the database if theres any new comment, if theres a new comment then it will send a true to the client application else false.
An example is just like the Yahoo!. When an email is recieved, if you have the (Yahoo Messenger installed) the yahoo from the taskbar will appear (small pop up) and tells the user that ha has a new email.
Thats all..

The previous reply was onto something. It is possible to just setup the application to connect either directly to the SQL Database which would open a huge security risk unless this is an internal process or you must use a web service which is just basically a fancy web application with no user interface. You just need to choose to create a web service and most of the work is taken care of and all you need to do is put in the methods to contact the database.

ahhaa ic .. but then how can i communicate from the application to the web service?
i need to make a property such as .. Diagnostics.Process.Start("www.maltatrade.org/Check.aspx")??

I think you People forgot the Basic .NET Frame work.
As all the Application are in a Compiled form even though you are using VB or C# in different projects there wont be any problem in calling. All the functionality will be similar as the application consider only the compield native code.
Hai Adrian De Battista you can call the functions from C# - VB or VB - C# as if you are calling C# - C# or VB - VB

How can we populate fields in a pdf file in our VB.net web application and display them in the browser? (I am new to .NET and web development)

There is no direct way to do it. You have to use some third party libraries available in the net freely.

Thank you. Do you know of any specific sites where I could find these libraries? Or, can you suggest a good phrase to put in my search to find that information?

I have a web application data entry form and on the form I need to populate four drop down lists from four different database tables.
I placed ONE SqlDataSource control on the web page and in the Page_Load subroutine I placed the following code.
Protected Sub Page_Load(ByVal sender As Object, _
ByVal e As System.EventArgs) _
Handles Me.Load
'Retrieve the datasource connection string from the Web.Config file
DtaSource.ConnectionString = MRMFunctions.WebConfigConnString
'Retrieve Employee titles from the database
Dim strTitleSQL = "SELECT * FROM tblTitles WHERE [Deleted] = 0;"
DtaSource.SelectCommand = strTitleSQL
cboTitle.DataSourceID = DtaSource.ID.ToString
cboTitle.DataTextField = "Title"
cboTitle.DataValueField = "TitleID"
DtaSource.Dispose()
'Retrieve the department names from the database
Dim strDeptSQL = "SELECT * FROM tblDepartments WHERE [Deleted] = 0;"
DtaSource.SelectCommand = strDeptSQL
cboDept.DataSourceID = DtaSource.ID.ToString
cboDept.DataTextField = "Department"
cboDept.DataValueField = "DeptID"
DtaSource.Dispose()
'Retrieve the address types from the database
Dim strAddrTypeSQL = "SELECT * FROM tblAddressTypes WHERE [Deleted] = 0;"
DtaSource.SelectCommand = strAddrTypeSQL
cboAddrType.DataSourceID = DtaSource.ID.ToString
cboAddrType.DataTextField = "AddressType"
cboAddrType.DataValueField = "AddressTypeID"
DtaSource.Dispose()
'Retrieve state names from the database
Dim strStateSQL = "SELECT * FROM tblStates;"
DtaSource.SelectCommand = strStateSQL
cboAddrType.DataSourceID = DtaSource.ID.ToString
cboAddrType.DataTextField = "StateAbbr"
cboAddrType.DataValueField = "StateID"
DtaSource.Dispose()
End Sub
When I run the form I get the following error:
Server Error in ‘/DataEntry’ Application
DataBinding: ‘System.Data.DataRowView’ does not contain a property with the name ‘Title’. I assume this error is being caused by the next set of databinding instructions(Retrieve the department names), because the resources are not being released after the first combo box is populated.
The funny thing is: When I place another SqlDataSource control on the page and modify the second set of data retrival instructions to access this control. The second combo box is populated correctly(no surprise here).
There has got to be a way I can get away with using only one SqlDataSource control, but my extreme lack of ASP.NET experience is hindering my efforts. Does anyone know a way of accomplishing this task?
Thank you,

#1: Why are you disposing DtaSource all over the place?
#2: Create a connection, command and do it that way. Also remember DataBind.

Intuitively, I thought after the first combobox was populated I would release its resources and then populate the next combobox by resetting the poperties on the SQLDataSource again. My extreme inexperiance in ASP.NET is showing.
ednrgc wrote: #2: Create a connection, command and do it that way. Also remember DataBind.
I have a function that retrieves the connection string for the SQL database I'm using. I remember DataSets from making a Windows application. I'm making a Web application, and I don't think we can use a DataSet. Do you have an example of using one SqlDataSource and using it to bind data to multiple combo boxes?
Silly question: Is databinding limited to one datasource being bound to one control? Example: SqlDataSource1 data bound to ComboBox1, SqlDataSource2 data bound to ComboBox2 and so on.
Thank you,
