I doubt that, otherwise I'd be able to vote from home even though I've already voted from work using the same account name.

My apologies, I miss read that. Basically what happens is this:
- Your IP is checked
+ If has voted you are not allowed to vote ||
+If has not voted proceed >
- Your userID is checked
+IF has voted you are not allowed to vote ||
+If has not voted you are allowed to vote <>

That is how it used to be, but you can only vote now if you're signed in, and if you are, it doesn't matter what your IP address is because a lot of signed in users share the same IP address, but can vote as individuals since they're signed in. Thus, the error message is obsolete.

How is that possible if a user can log into any machine and vote, but cannot vote without logging in?

You seem to be having trouble understanding this. Basically it boils down to people wanting to swing votes one way or another, and so they create duplicate accounts to vote numerous times. Now the best way to authenticate an individual is by their IP (or SSN). So basically you have to check IP, User logged in and maybe even as a last resort: cookies.

And how do you tell the difference between one person logging in as different users using the same IP address and two people logging in as different users using the same IP address? There was a news story a week or so ago where Wikipedia or somebody blocked one person's IP address and it turned out to block their entire country's internet users since all of that country's users shared the same IP address from their only telecommunications company. If IP addresses are still used, then that is a problem for many users.

You are arguing about something that is not worth arguing about. Although it is a frustration that we cannot verify individual users we CANNOT DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT and therefore you must understand that webmasters have to use whatever they can to stop unfairness.
I am tired now so I don't fell like explaining concepts like this. Perhaps a google on "user verification" will turn up one of those primary school tutorials on why you need to do this.

Not so. If someone else has voted and he/she shares your IP address, you cannot vote on messages. Smitha and I cannot vote on the same message from home, since we will both be on the same external IP. Chris is aware of this and at the moment, he doesn't have any plans on working around this situation. There was an earlier thread (this page or the next page) where I have suggested an possible solution.

Damn, but if you can only vote when you log in, then that should create some protection. If someone (Kyle) is going around creating multiple accounts, then they're still gonna come around and post messages even if they can't vote, but you cripple honest people's capability to voice their opinion. How many people are creating accounts to just vote and not post that we had to disable voting per IP?

But if different users can create multiple accounts to post from the same IP address, but not to vote, isn't that a lot worse for potential abuse? Or are IP addresses unique to accounts for posting as well as voting? If so, then they way it is is fine for now. Liked your suggestion on fixing this by the way.

If you badly want to vote on a message (some of mine for instance), you could use Torpark as a temporary workaround. Guys like Kyle use it anyway - so we might as well put it to some good use.

Interesting, so as always, the bad apples have a workaround in place. I don't trust anonymizers. Maybe I'm just too paranoid. Not that I have anything to hide.

Unless you're living in a totalitarian state where anonymity and data privacy are illegal the only real risk you run is as a host if you're the last link someone else used while committing a cyber crime. Performance and stability are other matters entirely. A friend of mine uses TOR to access IRC (chat) despite his schools firewall blocking direct connections and he's rather badly unstable while doing so as boxes in the chain drop in and out of availability.

When there are thousands of people clamouring to get questions answered about PHP in a .NET environment then I'll add a board. Until then you need to get behind the DirectX guys in line.
In all seriousness I can have a board for everything under the sun. However, more boards does not equal a better experience. At least not until we have subscriptions to boards. Things just get lost in the plethora of options.

An btw I think is as good a time as any to ask your permission to make a community website for CP. Not anything to compete with what you have (and I would be happy to stick your ads up (as long as they don't cause too much lag)). I was thinking more of a member orientated sort of website.
