I'm still looking at the CSplitterWnd code. There's a few handy undocumented overridables.
May not be as much work as I thought...
I'm going to try a bit and see what happens.

Here's a custom CSplitterWnd class - all I changed was the constructor 
Needs a little work but getting rid of the fat 2 pixel border helps.
I'd like to draw them more subtle like Visual Studios...
(I removed themes for these screenshots)

These settings seem more pleasing...

Not exactly the effect I'm going after. It affects both sides of the splitter. I want to control just the "client edge" drawing of one specific view. In this case, the code should only affect just one side of the splitter (top part).
Figure how how to affect the drawing of a single side of a splitter and you'll probably have code worthy of a CP article on your hands.

It looks like I need something similar with a splitter on a tab control. The top line of the splitter pane box messes up the indication of which tab is selected.

Ok. So far I can control...
Splitter width
3D Border width (0,1,2(default))
Which border sides are drawn
All the colors of the drawn border sides (if thickness 2, 2 colors each)
Face color of splitter bar
All border and face colors of the splitter box (shown/used on dynamic splitters)
Useful?

Interesting. I'd probably have to see a demo app. in action. Or get sleep. One of the two anyway.

Hmm...maybe it can be faked by setting border width to 0 and then setting WS_EX_CLIENTEDGE on each view EXCEPT the views that authors don't want. Would that work? I'll try it sometime in the next two days with ST_SplitterWnd, but it would be nice to know if it will work up front before I burn a couple hours trying.

Good idea. I'll send the code tomorrow am - it's easy enough to test - it's derived from
CSplitterWnd.

I am not sure you can do that reliably - under some situations, even trying to closing the console can result in a process being forceably terminated as opposed to ending normally. Launch a command prompt, run the FTP client in it and then try to close the console window by clicking the [X] for an example.
I do not know of a single way to have a process be able to execute some kind of atexit(...) functionality in all cases of the process ending (normally or abnormally).
My suggestion, if something MUST run regardless of how the process ends, is to have another lightweight process that gets the HANDLE to the first process, and when the HANDLE becomes signaled, it indicates that the first process has ended and your second program can do/run something.

Hey guys, I'm writing a small in house tool with VS2005. I've been messing around with different examples, and I'm about at the point of pulling what's left of my hair out and jumping out of a window.
This may sound incredibly stupid, but I cannot add a scroll bar, neither vertical nor horizontal, to my application.
Secondly, I can't figure out how to resize the applications window to the size of the image being opened.
Project created with MFC wizard, single document, and working inside of the ChildView generated class.
I win because I have the most fun in life...

Use a CScrollView derived view class, all the scroll bar handling stuff is then already done for you.
Secondly, take a look at the AdjustWindowRect[Ex] API.

i hav lots of c and c++ programming on TurboC++ 3.0
Now i wanna migrate to VC++ 6.0
being a beginner in win32 env. can anybody point me to some urls or give me some tips as how to start, which part to do first, etc. as there are lots of projects in its dialog box. Im confused wat to do first and where to search

this is not a real answer to your expectations, but why starting with Visual C++ 6 ? the compiler is pretty old, and really far now from the C++ standard. If you can aquire i'd suggest to work with Visual Studio 2005, or at least 2003.
another question comes in mind. why do you really need to migrate that legacy code, even from Turbo C++, if it does work already ? It sounds like a waste of time to migrate all the GUI specificities from one dev environment to the other
