Inotify is already included in current kernels, no rebuilding needed. The article was written while it was still in development.

Hi Mark,
I see that inotify comes built into kernel in SuSE 10 but my problem is in SuSE 9. I checked on the machine but i couldn't find inotify.
Any help is highly appreciated.

I don't know either of these, but the Link says "dnotify replacement", so I would look into dnotify.
Duh!

try "tail -f /var/log/etc" it may not show you what you want but it's a start. The tail command is very useful.

I found from a link that Symantec Antivirus does not currently ship or support the commandline scanner albeit it is available from Tools/ folder of the CDROM. However, we have the menu in Windows Explorer when you right click a file which reads as 'Scan for Viruses ...'.
What EXE does it invoke on selecting the same?
FOUND AN UPDATE: There is an explorer extension shell called vpshell32.dll which http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysinternals/utilities/autoruns.mspx[^] indicates. How to invoke it?

USB devices can advertise both a specific vendor ID and device ID, and one or more 'generic' device IDs. One of them is known to Windows as 'USB Mass Storage Device'.
The industry collectively have agreed on a specification for such devices and, if the specification is followed, device-specific drivers are not required - the same driver can be used for all such devices.
USB hard drives, pen drives, cameras, portable music players - all of these offer a USB Mass Storage Device function, and can all be controlled using the same driver.

My NT4 testbox reads them, but it has so much other stuff installed I don't know if it's provided by the base OS or one of the things added afterwards.

I think it was added by one of the updated Internet Explorer versions (4?). You'll have to clarify what program it is that is reading the PNGs.
Windows' CreateDIBSection function supports PNGs as of Windows 98 or Windows 2000, according to MSDN (see under BITMAPINFOHEADER ).

Thanks. IN that case I'm good since I'm hoping to use them as read only images in IE6 required HTML (not my choice).

IE6 has (or had) problems with showing PNG images with alpha blending. I do not know if this is solved. So be sure to test it.

Fixed in IE 7.0. IE 6.0 supports PNGs with transparent mask, but not alpha channel.
There are reports that IE 7.0 does not apply the gamma correction stored in the PNG file correctly, if that feature is used.

Create a distribution list that contains the AD group that everyone is a member of and then email that.

When I DL articles from this site, I usually copy the title, and create a directory for that code. When the title has characters like : or \, windows takes that character out when you create a new directory, and paste the title.
Is it possible to change this behavior to swap out that invalid character and replace it with an underscore (or any other predetermined character choice)?

You seem to be convinced it a windows xp startup password. Can you explain what a windows xp startup password is? I never heard of it.

For the second time, there is no such thing. You've either got a system startup password set in your machines BIOS or you've got something 3rd party installed. There is NOTHING that comes with Windows that will ask for a password like this.

Please try to explain what you mean with 'windows xp startup password' As far as I know there is no such thing. So if you can be a little bit more specific, maybe we can help. You could try to tell us what the screen looks like, at what time in the boot process it appears, etc.

sir i knew only these things that a dialog box appears before logon window.in that it is written enter windows startup password.then login window comes.i don't know anything else about it.

you can try to find the program which asks for the password with Autoruns[^].
First look at the services, drivers and Boot Execute. Disable any software you don't trust, and try a rebbot to check if the password dialogbox still appears. If so, try to disable more programs.
