I have Windows XP Home. I have an external Buffalo hard disk partitioned. When I "safely remove" the drives 2 partitions remain in Explorer and Defrag sees them too.
Other than the icons just being there I think they are messing up my being able to get Microsoft Updates even though I have a genuine Windows copy installed on my 2002
Hewelett Packard Pavilion 762n. Any idea on how to fix this? Thanks

Q. Do you copyright your source code?
It bothers me to have to mail my secret source code to a copyright attorney or U.S. copyright office. I'm not comfortable with anyone seeing all my hard work. Who can you trust?
I'm asking because it seems to me very difficult to prove or disprove if my source code is being used, whole or in part, by another program.
A software thief would be smart enough to not copy a Windows App in its entirety because it would look identical to the original.
However, a small DLL copy or clone and rename would probably pass the public eye unnoticably.
I fully understand book copyrighting because the text is public and easily compared to another authors text. Plagiarism much more easily detected and proved or disproved.
But software source code is something hidden from public eye.
There's no way I could know if someone has cut-n-paste my source code into thiers.
On the other hand, I can also understand that copyrighting may be a good 'extra care measure' to protect the 'what if' cases of source code theft.
Q. What is your honest opinion about source code copyrights.

As far as I know, anything written or produced by an individual is copyrighted in the United States regardless. The officialness of all of that would be Trademarks and Patents and those must be taken care of through official means.
Having said that, I agree that it would be difficult to prove anything along those lines, Im really not sure what to tell you about how to protect everything.

Hi,
I am creating a Windows Installer wherein I have added a "RegisterUser" dialog to the installer interface.
However, I would like this "RegisterUser" dialog only when it is being freshly installed on a machine.
For eg. If I am installing the software on machine A for the first time, then RegisterUser dialog will be displayed on the screen. After that if i uninstall the software from that machine and again re-install the same , then the "RegisterUser" dialog should not be displayed again, since the software was already previously installed on that machine(A)
Please Help!!!.
Thanking you in Advance
Kind Regards
Pratik Shah

I would recommend creating your own custom action. Create a new assembly containing your own user registration form and a class derived from System.Configuration.Install.Installer. Handle the AfterInstall event and display your own form:
// MyInstaller is derived from the class 'Installer'.
MyInstaller() : base()
{
AfterInstall += new InstallEventHandler(AfterInstallEventHandler);
}
private void AfterInstallEventHandler(object sender, InstallEventArgs e)
{
// Show the user registration form.
if (NewUser())
new MyUserRegistrationForm().Show();
}
private bool NewUser()
{
// Determine whether this is a clean install.
}

Do you mean to create your own ones rather than using the existing ones? Also I would like to know what programming language you intend to use for these? C or Vb.net.

Yes i mean creating new ones. I use C# as a programing language

Exactly what do you expect us to do for you?

I would suggest searching on this site and on google for
"Extending ToolBar in C#" etc. you will find many useful things.

I am working on a POS application that needs to run once, and then when called again it will just activate the current instance. So I have the run once code working but now I need to be able to pass params to the running instance. I am trying to implement a way to save the params to my properties.settings.default.param1, so when the exe is called the second time, I check for an existing instance by name, and if I find it I restore it. before I restore it I save the value of my params, and in the activated event of my form, I grab that data and present it to the user. Well this is not working all the time, sometimes it works sometimes it does not...I'm totally open to new ideas on this process...

Please accept my apology I am a bit confused about activating the current instance because you are saying that "run once code working". Therefore, the application is not getting ran for twice.
The second attempt to run application will restore to current instance (right?). If you are dealing C# I can't help but in VB. I would use strings in resources of applications where I store these parameters and then recall them back to use. I have copied a sample code from MSDN for you, I tought that it would give you an idea how to save and retrieve parameters from a resource file of an application. Take this please just an idea...
Imports System
Imports System.Resources
Imports System.IO
Public Class WriteResources
Public Shared Sub Main(ByVal args() As String)
' Create a file stream to encapsulate items.resources.
Dim fs As New FileStream("items.resources", _
FileMode.OpenOrCreate, FileAccess.Write)
' Open a resource writer to write from the stream.
Dim writer = New ResourceWriter(fs)
' Add resources to the resource writer.
writer.AddResource("String 1", "First String")
writer.AddResource("String 2", "Second String")
writer.AddResource("String 3", "Third String")
' Generate the resources, and close the writer.
writer.Generate()
writer.Close()
End Sub
End Class

Thank you...but that is basically what I am doing...my params save just fine to my resource file...but my "Activated" event is not working they way I thought it would. When I restore the first instance, sometimes I get my data and sometimes its like the Activated event is not even firing!!!!
Yeah I'm a C# guy...last basic I wrote was in 1988....hahaha.

Hi there!
[edit]:
Sorry, wrong Message board. I'll post it on the VC++/MFC Board
[/edit]
We've got a real big problem, allthough it seems to be not really difficult:
Our main application is a dialog which definitely MUST remain a dialog.
My colleague wants to create a SDI window from this dialog by clicking on a specific button.
Still no problem.
The problem ist, that the window seems not to get the windows messages:
Usually if you create a method to handle a mouseclick on a button in the toolbar, you can also create a function
OnUpdateClickXXX(CCmdUI* pCmdUI)
for example you could gray a specific button, if ButtonXXX is being clicked on.
But OnUpdateClickXXX is never called!
For me it seems, that the WM_PAINT message is being processed just by the dialog.
the SDI window is created with
CSingleDocTemplate* pDocTemplate;<br />
pDocTemplate = new CSingleDocTemplate(<br />
IDR_MAINFRAME,<br />
RUNTIME_CLASS(CSDI_LeerDoc),<br />
RUNTIME_CLASS(CMainFrame), <br />
RUNTIME_CLASS(CSDI_LeerView));<br />
AfxGetApp()->AddDocTemplate(pDocTemplate);
when you click on a button in the dialog.
All OnClickBlah, OnUpdateBlah... methods are inserted by the class wizard, and the AFX_MESSAGE_MAP
has the correct ON_COMMAND, ON_UPDATE_COMMAND...entries
Could you give us some hints, where we could look for that problem?
Sure, the problem is caused by the dialog "standing" between the application and the doc/view.
Thank you all, and i hope you can help us with our problem.

I have a win application that uses tabcontrol with two tabPages(tp1 & tp2). On the first tab page the user enters the product category name and that it's added to the tblCategory in the database. On the second page the user must select the category from the drop down then add products to the tblProducts.
My problem is that when a user enters a category at tp1 that is added to the database correctly, however when they move to tp2 to add the product, the category that was just added on tp1 is not available immediately on the dropdown, i.e i must first close and re-start the application before it appears. How can i make the category available immediately on tp2 dropdown list?
