What exact format has this list? Is it a collection of plain strings or of a class or struct representing a person?
Hakkim007 wrote: if i enter corresponding date
Where do you enter this date? A textbox or some other control that gives you a DateTime object (DateTimePicker). In case of the former, do you ensure the date has always the same format?

What did you try so far? Show us the code, so we can help you make it work.

Sounds like you need to post your code. If the date format is always the same, you can use a DateTime to format a string that is in the same format, then you can search for the string within your entries. It would be better if you had the data in a more searchable format, how does it get there ?

Actually I am designing a forex application in which I have a profile of Receiver (who receives moneny from foriegn country) and a profile of Sender (who send money from outside the country).
moreover,one sender may have 1 or more receiver(s).
In the above scenario, I have design a webform for making remittence, in which there is a dropdown list of Sender upon its postback; dropdown list of receiver populates and we can select receiver of our choice. upto this (means during transaction) it works fine. after making transaction I have populated a gridview to view transaction that we already have made. and there is another facility of editing any transaction. (but the facility is not of GridviewControl); there is an imagebutton upon its click the editing takes place;for your better understanding here is a code snippet:
protected void ibtn_edit_Click(object sender, ImageClickEventArgs e)
{
Remmitance rm = RemmitanceDAL.FindRecord(gv.DataKeys[gv.SelectedIndex].Value.ToString());
if (null!=rm)
{
Session["tmode"] = "E"; //edit mode
txtCharges.Text = rm.Charges.ToString();
txtDate.Value = rm.Date.ToString("dd-MMM-yyyy");
txtExchangeRate.Value = rm.ExchangeRate.ToString();
txtPurpose.Text = rm.Purpose;
txtSendingAmt.Text = rm.SendingAmount.ToString();
txtSendingDate.Value = rm.SendingDate.ToString("dd-MMM-yyyy");
txtTransactionNo.Text = rm.TransactionNo;
ddPayMode.SelectedValue=rm.PaymentMode.ToString();
ddSender.SelectedValue=rm.SenderID;
ddSendingCurrency.SelectedValue=rm.SendingCurrency.ToString();
ddReceiver.SelectedValue=rm.ReceiverID;
txtTransactionNo.Enabled=false;
toggleDiv(true); //toggles the input & grid div
}
}
the above code actually instantiate a class of Remittence and put all the value to corresponding controls, here not always but sometimes i got an error that i have mentioned in my previous post.
now i can hope that you understand what I am trying to say.

Hello!
Here's the problem statment:
(I'm working in C#)
I am on a network. I'm getting a video stream (encoded in mpeg) from another system on the network. I'm receiving the stream through a UDP connection. I want to play it. I want some thing which will take that encoded stream, decode it and then play it on, say, media player. From what I'v concluded after my research so far, I can do this all by using Windows Media Player SDK or something like it. But haven't been able to find any help on it. Can somebody please give me a direction, where should I look for this problem. And .... its urgent ...

Hi,
I'm calling a web service which returns a GUID together with an associated object (it's actually an invoice). I need to display the contents of the object which comprises a number of text fields but the only unique reference I have is the GUID. Unfortunately a GUID does make for a reasonable "referece" to display to users.
Has anyone got any suggestions how to either encode or render a GUID into something more user-friendly?

Well there's probably a thousand and one things you could do - first question is the web service one you code as well? The reason I ask is that if so then it seems likely that you also have access to the database as well. If so I am curious why your company does not have some facility to create a more customer readable invoice reference in the first place. If this is something you can change can't you create a table which stores a more usable reference number against the customer and the guid (for example), then you could easily create a stored proc which would insert a new row for each new invoice for each new OR existing customer which could easily create a new invoice number again,
for example
id column, invoice Guid, Customer Id, Usable Invoice Item
1, 12345678-1234-1234-1234-1234567890AB, 123, 123-00001
2, 12345678-1234-1234-1234-1234567890BB, 123, 123-00002
Or even Mark-00001 if you wanted to use the customers Name as part of the reference.
If however you don't have access then your going to come somewhat unstuck (possibly) if you try and fiddle with the Guid for the invoice. The whole point of a guid is that it's supposed to be unique in time and place - the only way to enforce that is to use the whole Guid, otherwise there is a (slim) chance that you might end up getting the same number twice. Maybe if you laid out the code or company process we could offer better suggestions.
Mark.

The web service is provided by someone else unfortunately. It sounds like I'm going to have to find some other way of mapping the objects across the web service. Thanks anyway

Saikek wrote: What is the difference between Soap and Binary Serilization ?
Mainly the format of the serializtion result. The former serializes an object to SOAP (an XML-based format) whereas the latter serializes an object to a binary format. From this it follows that the reult of the SOAP serialization is to some extent human-readable and can be consumed by an XML processor whereas the result of the binary serialization will be smaller.

if u r using binay serializing so you will have to open a tcp port in your firewall through whihch your onjects ould be serialized and this is not secure because you are opening your port even for untrusted users , but while using soap serialization which is xml based and xml data can be transmitted over http port which is port 80 so there is no need to open any additional port for transmitting or receiving soap serialized objects, on other hand all the languages today support xml parsing you just send them serialized xml object and they will parse it according to their language xml parset (e.g system.xml on dot net).

One more major difference: Problems with Xml serialization
a) you're referenced objects are no longer referenced by reference after deserialization. (i cant beleive i used word 'reference' thrice in a sentence)
b) cannot handle circular reference (e.g. Company has employees, Employee has refrence to parent Company object)
c) Large file size
Assume you have a classes Company and Employee.
Company c = new Company("ABC");
Employee e1 = new Employee("Jack");
Employee e2 = new Employee("John");
e1.Company = c;
e2.Company = c;
ArrayList employees = new ArrayList();
employees.Add(e1);
employees.Add(e2);
------------------------------------
After serialization...
<employeeslist>
<employee>
<name>Jack
<company>
... company details
<employee>
<name>John
<company>
... company details

You can start by looking at TextBox.TextChanged event handler.
Good luck
If you can't find time to do it right the first time how are you going to find time to do it again?

Using C# and .NET, I need to make an XML document. I've searched and all i can find is info on using XmlReader and XmlWriter, or XmlDocument after loading an already existing XML file. Problem is, I don't have or need a file. I really can't even make the file, due to security issues. I need to be able to make the XML structure in memory. Below is a sample of what I've tried so far, and the error it gives me.
XmlDocument doc = new XmlDocument();<br />
XmlNode node;<br />
<br />
node = doc.CreateTextNode( "This is a text node." );<br />
doc.AppendChild( node ); <-- System.InvalidOperationException was unhandled, "The specified node cannot be inserted as the valid child of this node, because the specified node is the wrong type."
I know I have all the right "using's", it compiles fine. My guess is the XmlDocument isn't initialized correctly, but i can't find info on how else to do so.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A text node cannot be a direct child of an XML document. You have to create an element first that will become the root element of your document and add all other content to this element.
