Hi,
Has anyone implemented the design patterns from www.dofactory.com?? If so, what are your comments on these design paterns??
I am an established .NET developer with lots of development experience behind my name, but I want to take my development skilss and the way that I do things to a next level.
I am working through their design patterns, and I want to use Microsoft's Membership provider. I have used this alot in the past by just coding everything. Is there no better way of using their loggin system with design patterns? If so, please can someone advise??

Whenever I need a quick refresher on the intricacies of a pattern, I head to Dofactory. While I find their online examples are a bit contrived and a bit limited, their UML diagrams are spot on.

The Membership Provider is based on a design pattern. It's called the Provider pattern.

Thanks.
Are you very familiar with patterns??
Do you know if there are any sample web apps, besides the Do Factory website, that shows exaples of how patterns are used?
Would you recommend any good reading material with patterns and .NET 2.0?
Cheers.

Well, I've been using them for several years now, so I guess the answer is yes.

Try this, http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/practices/default.aspx[^]

If you want to know patterns, you really should start with the GoF (Gang of Four) book. http://www.amazon.com/Design-Patterns-Object-Oriented-Addison-Wesley-Professional/dp/0201633612[^]. Once you know how they work, there are any number of sources (on-line and in book format) for using patterns along with .NET (primarily in C# it has to be said).

I use an IMessageTransport to send various B2B messages and receive replies. It has various methods related to various business functions, so e.g. I will pass a DocumentMessage to the SubmitDocument method, or a StatusRequest to the GetDocStatus method. A requirement has arisen to include, lets call it, a SenderID, with each message sent. Now, before I do any refactoring, I need a Guid SenderID param for each IMessageTransport method.
Now, to remove this duplication I could delegate the insertion of the SenderID to the implementors of IMessageTransport, but I may want to allow these to also send messages from other senders. I seem to have two choices: all IMessageTransport methods must be passed an object that derives from MessageBase, which exposes a SenderID property, and populates this from config, or an IMessage interface, with the same property that is populated by a sender dedicated factory class. Which would be the better direction to look in?

I would definitely go with the Factory pattern. It gives you more flexibility later on, especially if things change further down the line.

You need a GUID for each method?

Yes, but the same one. Until a point, I have separated the sender ID from the business information, as at the interface to our other system there is always only one sender, but I prefer not to fix a single sender ID in my transport. Therefore between the transport layer getting a message to send, and sending it, it must determine a sender ID. At the moment it's passed with the message as a parameter.

I have a form ( dialog ) that shows (among other things ) a simple Edit box and a Button to browse ( calls a file selector )
What should I show to the user in the Edit Box ?
The complete filename ( path and extension : c:\\MyPath\\MyFilename.Extension )
Only the filename ? With or without the extension ? ( MyFilename.Extension or MyFilename )
Should the Edit box be editable ?
The issue I have right now is that if I show the complete filename, and the user decide to type only a name ( no path or extension ) what should be the behaviour ?
Reject the filename and warn the user ?
Try to build a default path with the default extension ?
Thanks.

Have an edit box for the path, filled initially with some good default path
Have another edit box for the file name
have a third for the extension (defaulted as for the path)
when the user changes either the path or extension, save the changes as new defaults
Use a static/label to display the full path

Dear All,
We need to create an application for folder selection dialog and we have creted using SHBrowseForFolder concept.Using this concept we were able to compile and run the application in Emulator.Whereas when we are trying to run the application in CEPC(x86 processor), it just hangs and shows the message as "Unknown: DEBUGCHK failed in file C:\WINCE500\PUBLIC\SHELL\OAK\HPC\CESHELL\API\.\api.cpp at line 385".It happens when the application issues the api SHBrowseForFolder. Can anyone suggest an idea to solve this problem.
Thanks in Advance.

Hi,
I have to come up with the architecture for very uncommon (by my opinion) framework:
1)I have to develop the MAPI store provider module for Outlook 2000/2007. This MAPI store provider has to be done with C++ (ATL) since Microsoft does not officially support .NET on MAPI store provider site.
2)There is the “data adapter” which has to supply the actual data to MAPI store provider (folders, list view, columns and more). This “adapter” has to be done on .NET/C# . The data could be retrieved from different data sources by “data adapter”. This could be the database, the file system or even web.
3)The .NET based “data adapter” has to be also flexible enough to supply data to different clients (I call them extensions), such as MAPI store provider, Windows explorer extension, Pocket PC and more.
In the COM word (which I know much better then .NET) I could design such architecture as a COM based MAPI store provider, COM based Windows explorer extension and COM based out-of-process server which will be the data source for “client site” extensions. I have a hard time making a decision regarding of the architecture which involves .NET data adapter. The problem here is the fact that:
1)I need the .NET replacement for COM based out-off-process server.
2)Connect C++ based MAPI provider with .NET out of process “data adapter”. I could use the C++/CLI in order to connect the MAPI store provider to “data adapter” component, but preferably NO .NET on the MAPI store provider site - it should be pure COM based.
3)The protocol between the data adapter and the client site should be really fast.
4)The replacement of COM based out-of process server (data adapter) should provide data to many concurrently running clients (Win Explorer and MAPI provider/Outlook for example)
The framework could be developed with any available .NET version - I just need the fastest way to communicate between COM based client and .NET out-of-process replacement.
I would really appreciate if you have some code example of such architecture for performances measurement (at least one C++/COM based client connected to .NET based “off-process” server).
Regards,
Dmitry

Hi,
The "Paint" application that is bundled with Windows distributions
is not open-source, so nobody will give you the sources.
Anyway, you can take a look at the Paint.NET:
http://www.getpaint.net/download.html
It is open-source, whole project is monitored by Microsoft,
so it'll give you the idea on how graphics editor works.
Hope it helps,
- Dmitry.

Hiya all.
I'm currently trying to find some sources/feedback upon various methods of designing a database.
Up to now, the database design I've been working with have been relatively simple and thus not so difficult in modeling, but now I think I'll be faced with a more difficult project and thus am trying to find some inspiration.
If I have to map a large amount of products to a database, and each product can have a (large) amount of various attributes across multiple languages. The attributes for one product might not all be used for any other product and vice versa - so I'm ponding what would be the best way of doing this.
To simplify:
Supposed we have product X and Y and Z.
Product X have attributes A, B, C
Product Y have attributes D, E, F
Product Z have attributes A, B, F
Now multiply this up with a factor 50 per attribute and thousands of products over various languages and markets and we get the scope.
Now, how I usually handle attributes is to normalise them out into a seperate table and use a connection table for the value, so I have a table for product, attribute and attribute value entity with a key from the product and attribute.
Pretty standard I think....
However, with a scope like this, we'd be looking at a big table of attributes, products and then subsequently a very big table of values. This would/could seriously hamper the lookup times from the database.
An alternative method I could think off would be to make some sort of dynamic table creation, so each product when created, got a table assigned to itself with the attributes.
So I'd have a product table, and for each of these a currentProduct_attribute table which would contain all the values. This would provide a faster lookup, from what I can see at the expense of a very large number of tables and various administrative problems if a product is to be move/deleted etc.
Another alternative could be to integrate the attributes into the product table with additional fields there. It would however cause huge product table with many unused fields in each row. Alternative one could sort of "bitmap" the attributes in the product table.
Does anybody have any feedback or pointers - or possible references (please, if possible) I could take with me in my considerations?
I've tried googeling my problem, but it is difficult finding something concrete and some relevant keywords to search for.
Thanks in advance.
