Yes, you can use ADO to read from the Excel file, or just the Excel COM objects if it is installed.

Hi,
Here's what I'm trying to do:
I have a local application which stores data (locally) in an access or SQLServer database. What I need to do is pass a subset of that data to a remote database on the internet. There are a couple of provisos though - can only use c++/WIN32 on the client (no MFC or .Net), can use any damn technology on the server.
Here are a few methods I have considered:-
1) Convert to XML locally, upload to server using FTP, parse using XML control from ASP page and write into DB. (bit cludgy)
2) Convert to XML string , write to ASP page as HTTP POST and parse in ASP page.
3) Use some crazy new .NET technology (on the server only) to accomplish this for me?
The amount of data transmitted is likely to be pretty small (~10K).
Anybody have any thoughts/suggestions??
Cheers

Use SQLXML on the server.

Does this allow you to insert into the remote DB. I've had a quick look on MSDN and it looks like it can be used to query remote data sources but I need to insert. I also need the client to work without any special software (like SOAP or .NET).
Can you point me at any links or other info?
Cheers

Not sure if this will help you but it could be a start

Which one? If you have SQL Server as your source you could create a DTS package to grab information and push it out to another source.

How do you create page templates? Do you use the old fashioned #include to bring in headers and footers, or create user controls that contain aggregated user controls and HTML for your headers and footers, or do you rely on CodeBehind and inject headers/footers before/after the Rendering?

I've used the user control method.

That's a really good question. I have just started building my own site and have designed a quite pretty default.aspx with three web controls (header, footer, and navigator), all arranged with tables. Now I am confronted with the same problem. How to keep all pages consistent? I thought of using plain vanilla #include s, but still didn't come to a decision

I've decided to use the old fashioned #include method to keep things neat and simple

You would use ADO.Net with a special driver for connecting to an Excel spreadsheet and then make another connection to a real database and shove the stuff in there.

How did you expect it to get there ? Magic ?
If your child window is called child.asp, then open it like this:
child.asp?s=27
although s is a poor variable name.
Now in the child you can set s to = <%Request.QueryString("s")%>, in otherwords, get VBScript to read it off the URL and set the javascript variable with it.

You can use the "opener" property to access the parent window.

My web service uses ITC,
<webmethod()> Public Function DownloadHtml() As String
Dim s As New InetCtlsObjects.Inet()
s.AccessType = InetCtlsObjects.AccessConstants.icUseDefault
s.Protocol = InetCtlsObjects.ProtocolConstants.icHTTP
Dim url As String = "http://www.yahoo.com"
s.URL = url
Dim m As String
m = s.OpenURL(url, InetCtlsObjects.DataTypeConstants.icString)
Do Until s.StillExecuting = False
Loop
DownloadHtml = "result=" & m
End Function
I always get an empty string as result. What did I do wrong?

I read in a book on ASP that it's good to develop your asp
web using IIS and SQL Server but:
-I can't install SQL server on Windows XP
-When I create a project with Interdev running on Windows XP
platform, Visual Interdev can,t connect with Web Server(I
have already install IIS and test it).
Please Help Me

Make sure you configured Front Page Server Extensions for IIS. And yes, you can install SQL Server on XP, but you'll have to use SQL Server Developer Edition.

I hate Interdev as well. What a pile of crap. I write ASPs in VC++, it gives me some syntax highlighting without being intrusive to the point of being unuseable.

I have two XP machines running SQL Server 2000 with no problems. I've also used VID on the same platform with no problems (other than what it comes with).
As suggested check your server extentions. Which version of SQL Server are you trying to install?

Problem Statement:
My requirement is to access a web page over the internet and parse the complete Web Page (HTML) content returned by the web-site
Current Approach:
Does .Net provide any re-usable components or classes for achieving the same?
I have currently used the System.Net namespace functions provided by .Net namely HttpWebRequest, HttpWebResponse and HttpWebClient to retrieve the HTML content from the URL accessed. The content returned is stored in a stream object and then converted to a string to parse each HTML element and attribute. The parsing also identifies all links on the page (and converts it to the absolute path), all images (which is downloaded), any javascript code and any includes like ".js" , ".jpeg", ".css" files. The end result obtained is a replica of the web page accessed. All this has been done programmatically.
Drawback of the approach:
It is a very tedious approach since the string containing the HTML code needs to be parsed and stripped into elements, attributes, links, includes, images etc.
It is not effective as far as performance is considered since the logic involves content crawling and downloads.
My Question:
Are there any better approaches to meet the requirement - may be something like re-usable HTML parsers or Web page content parsers already available or pre-defined classes/libraries in .Net?
