Hello,
I have created and tested a web service .Net 2.0
I have created a client that client (PDA smart device CF 2.0) that will consume the web service. I have added a web reference using visual studio and everything works fine.
However, the customer wants the PDA to be able to update the web reference. This is because the web server that the web service has been deployed on could be moved and deployed on another web server. Moreover, the web service could be modified and the PDA will need to update the web reference to get the most up to date changes that have been made.
Can anyone point me in the right direction in doing this. Some code would be most grateful,
Thanks very much,
Steve

There is no answer to your problem. I think you can't update the webreference dynamically. don't break published interfaces. It forces clients to be recompiled and makes people grumpy. Check This[^]

Hi,
In my stylesheet I have the following line of code:
background-image: url(../../Images/logo.jpg);
Why can't the following not work because logically it looks the same??
background-image: url(/Images/logo.jpg);

They are not the same

../../ Look for the images folder by going back three folder levels from your current directory.

No. Two levels.

Not at all. It starts from the root.

It will work if your web site has it's own domain name, but not if it's in a virtual directory.
Example 1:
site at: www.mysite.com/
css file: www.mysite.com/css/std/style.css
image: www.mysite.com/Images/logo.jpg
Either way of adressing the image works.
Example 2:
site at: www.myhotel.com/mysite/
css file: www.myhotel.com/mysite/css/std/style.css
image: www.myhotel.com/mysite/Images/logo.jpg
Your first code will access the image, while your second code will try to access the image at www.myhotel.com/Images/logo.jpg.

Thanks for the reply.
I am testing locally on my home pc. My images directory is at:
http://localhost/MySite/Images/
And my stylesheets are here:
http://localhost/MySite/Includes/Stylesheets/
Cheers

Yes, then you have a virtual directory named MySite. The url "/Images/image.jpg" will look for the image at the address "http://localhost/Images/image.jpg", not "http://localhost/MySite/Images/image.jpg".

To make it work in localmachine I suggest don't use any virtual directories. Copy all files to IIS root folder and try.

Since each database has a different connection string. All you need is the relevant connection string to connect to the relevant database.

Yep - I use two databases for the ASP.Net ap I am working on, just need to define two connection strings, I use:
Dim conn As New SqlConnection("Server=SERVER;" & _
"Database=DATABASE1;User ID=nottelling;Password=nottelling")
Dim conn2 As New SqlConnection("Server=SERVER;" & _
"Database=DATABASE2;User ID=nottelling;Password=nottelling")
(this may not be the best way to do it, but it works)
also, remember you can query two databases in a single SQL query if they are on the same server
Dim SignedOutCommand As New SqlCommand("Select S.StaffID, S.InTime, S.HaveMob, I.FirstName, I.LastName FROM WhereAreYou.dbo.StaffOut S, Infobase.dbo.Staff I WHERE S.StaffID = I.StaffID ORDER BY I.FirstName", conn)
is one of my commands.
Hope this helps!

I have a web application developed for a single customer in VS2003. The application consistes of about a dozen pages. I am now deploying it to several other customers. For each different customer, most of the pages remain the same, with one or two pages being "custom" for each customer. I would like to maintain the source code for the "common" pages in a single location and just create or modify the different pages for each customer. I tried this using the "sharing" feature of Visual SOurce Safe 6, with no luck.
Can anyone reccommend a method of doing this such that i can create a new web app that shares a "base" set of pages so that as i make upgrades to the app, they will be made in one common set of files?

I was generating a word document with a password set to it from an ASP.NET application...
It was working fine except that a table which is assigned as the header is not correctly getting executed and that the 2 gif images are also not loaded.
The code is.....
wordApp.ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.[U]SeekView[/U] =
Word.WdSeekView.wdSeekCurrentPageHeader;
if(Convert.ToString(POarray[17]) != "0")
{
object dBehaviour = Word.WdDefaultTableBehavior.wdWord9TableBehavior;
object aBehaviour = Word.WdAutoFitBehavior.wdAutoFitWindow;
Word.Range tableRange = wordApp.Selection.Range;
Word.Table TblPO = wordDoc.Tables.Add(tableRange, 1, 3, ref dBehaviour,
ref aBehaviour);
TblPO.AllowAutoFit = true;
TblPO.TableDirection = Word.WdTableDirection.wdTableDirectionLtr;
TblPO.Columns.PreferredWidth = 10.0f;
TblPO.Cell(0,1).Range.Select();
string picHeaderLeft =
"C:\\InetPub\\WWWroot\\FolderName\\images\\Logo1.gif";
TblPO.Cell(0,1).Range.InlineShapes.AddPicture(picHeaderLeft, ref missing,
ref missing, ref missing);
//The above code in If Block is not getting executed correctly
//Only the following code is executed correctly (the middle cell)
TblPO.Columns.PreferredWidth = 80.0f;
//used setwidth()method...Got an exception
//which i could not resolve...
//And i am Automating Word 2000 (Word 9.0.2720)
TblPO.Cell(0,2).Range.Select();
wordApp.Selection.ParagraphFormat.Alignment = Word.WdParagraphAlignment.wdAlignParagraphCenter;
//TblPO.Cell(0,2).Range.Font.Size = 11;
//TblPO.Cell(0,2).Range.Font.Name = "Times New Roman";
string file = Convert.ToString(POarray[17]); // FilePath
TblPO.Cell(0,2).Range.InsertFile( file, ref missing, ref missing, ref missing, ref missing );
// The file got inserted correctly to the document as header
// Meaning TblPO is active in memory
// Again the following code is not getting executed properly
TblPO.Columns.PreferredWidth = 10.0f;
TblPO.Cell(0,3).Range.Select();
string picHeaderRight
= "C:\\InetPub\\WWWroot\\FolderName\\images\\Logo2.gif";
TblPO.Cell(0,3).Range.InlineShapes.AddPicture(picHeaderRight, ref missing,
ref missing,ref missing);
}
The code snippet continues as...
wordApp.Selection.TypeParagraph();
wordApp.ActiveWindow.ActivePane.View.SeekView =
Word.WdSeekView.wdSeekMainDocument;
wordApp.Selection.TypeParagraph();
wordApp.Selection.ParagraphFormat.Alignment = Word.WdParagraphAlignment.wdAlignParagraphCenter;
wordApp.Selection.Font.Bold = 1;
wordApp.Selection.Font.Underline = Word.WdUnderline.wdUnderlineSingle;
wordApp.Selection.Font.Name = "Times New Roman";
wordApp.Selection.Font.Size = 12;
wordApp.Selection.TypeText("Heading");
I heve checked up the code with breakpoints...But surprisingly it is not entering that "if " statement itself...It was jumping to a statement way
after wordApp.Selection.TypeText("Heading"), after it has executed SeekView statement.
Before also i had problems with breakpoints....Some times it will not enter to this class itself...
As this code is executed in Word(Unmanaged code) and not in CLR...I think inconsistancies can happen.....
I also had problems with solution....Changes not getting reflected in the solution even after building...In .NET is there versioning for solution ?
Please help....
I have no idea why it is behaving like this....

I’am using the System.Configuration.NameValueSectionHandler to read a key value pair from the web.config file
The code works perfect fine on our offshore environment, but it has failed on our onsite environment.
The web.config has the following entries
<configSections>
<section name="Twin" type="System.Configuration.NameValueSectionHandler, System, Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"/>
</configSections>
<Twin>
<add key="Pair1" value="Value1"/>
<add key="Pair2" value=" Value2"/>
</Twin>
The Error message generated is
An error occurred creating the configuration section handler for TwinCOBAM: Could not load type 'System.Configuration.NameValueSectionHandler' from assembly 'System.Configuration, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a'.
I’ve tried the following combinations of the Section entry, I picked up the version number; the public token number from the GAC
<section name="Twin" type="System.Configuration.NameValueSectionHandler, System, Version=1.0.5000.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089"/>
<section name="Twin" type="System.Configuration.NameValueSectionHandler, System.Configuration, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b03f5f7f11d50a3a"/>
After some googling, there are some varied findings; some say that it’s a bug in the .net framework. For some it works without even specifying the version numbers and public token keys. I haven’t been able to pin down the source of this problem.
Please help.

I am currently working on a competition site that will automatically draw winners at certain times. I have three seperate draws all to be drawn. One every month, another every week and another anually. I have a seperate table in a database with all entrants, obviously all with a unique id.
What I want is an automatic method for the draws. So that they happen seamslessly in the back ground. Draw the winners, email me to tell me about the winner, and update the database.
I'm guessing that it would make more sense to do this in a standalone app as I cant think of a way of getting a web site to automatically check this. Is this a good approach.
Also what would be a good, random method for selecting a winner from the list??

Yeah, you will have to use a standalone application to do this.
Sam Heller wrote: Also what would be a good, random method for selecting a winner from the list??
I would suggest Gaussian method to get the draw, you would get a perfect U curve while plotting the results.
|
|
|
|

Ok thanks for that. I had a brief look at Gaussian but looks like it could be slightly overkill for my requirements. I also couldnt see how u would tie that into my problem of having what is basically an array from the database of unique numbers and how to select one of these?
Any other ideas? or examples?
Thanks
