Bugs can neither be created nor be removed from software by a developer. They can only be converted from one form to another. The total number of bugs in the software always remain constant.

Open Command Prompt (Start Menu -> Run -> "cmd") and type ping www.google.com .
Trinity: Neo... nobody has ever done this before.

Any sysadmin worth their salt will have the messenger service disabled in the workstation build - indeed I believe that XPSP2 has it disabled by default. No messenger service, no net send.
Net send is a lashed-together, poor solution for communication to other machines across the network.

Net Send depends on 'Messenger Service' in Windows. (Do not confuse this with Windows Live Messenger Service).
Due to a large number of security faults, this might have been disabled.
There was one utility called 'RealPopup', a freeware. You can have a look at that.

I have a remote system that I am responsible for maintaining. It sits in the corner and does its thing - it is not used to web surf, email or anything else. A few months ago, the on-site sys admin decided it needed norton antivirus on it, which promptly began interfering with my application.
How do I get rid of this "virus"?

Oh this is just ripe.... first, it's my system, I'm the sysadmin, I have the power to install, uninstall, reboot, you name it. So, I go to remove Symantec, and Symantec requires a PASSWORD to remove it.
Unbelievable.

Ask Symantec
I had a DELL that wouldn't boot because of a weird interaction between the SATA DVD-+RW device and SAV, so I had to look in the Symantec knowledge base to work out a way around this.
You need Recovery Console to do this, and you may find listing the state of the drivers and services *first* is a good idea [hint]

Symantec Antivirus is very inefficient and I see it has a lot of memory leaks. As the system boots and once you logon, you can not do anything for at least 15 minutes till the Antivirus finishes its startup scan activities.

Well, setting aside this fact that the enterprise edition has issues, apparently, the people that installed it don't remember the installation password. I don't need it, I don't want it, go away
The part that annoys me the most, is they admins have been told this box is special, no touchie. they didn't listen

Hi,
When we open a Word document as a link in a secure (https://) area of our website, we get a "Choose a digital certificate" window which pops up when i try to open the Word document. The message says "The Website you want to view requests identification. Please choose a certificate." However, there are no certificates listed in the window below the message. The certificate is not expired. I only get the error on Word documents (not PDF or Excel documents) and it only happens the first time you click on a link. If I reopen a Word document which just gave me an error, I will not receive the error the second time around. Our browser security is set to Medium and I did add our secure website to the Trusted Sites. Pls sort out this issue.
Regards
Vijay.

There is an option, I guess, like 'Require Client Certificates'. I think that is selected for the virtual directory/website right?

With the client version of you can use the PCLI tool that ships with the workstation version of PVCS. I don't know if that works with the web version.

Hi,
I have a problem concerning the startup on a embedded XP system.
It seems the services needed are not yet started before my application runs.
The application needs the services and is placed in the startupfolder, so i thougth all services were started then..
Anyone any idea how i could solve this problem?
if i can hold the application from starting until all services are started then this should do.
Thx in advance.
Kurt

You could query the status of the services you require, and see if they have started. If you can modify the application, this is probably easiest...

you're probably right... the app already checks for the services, but only ones and gives an message when they are'nt active on startup. So i guess i have to buildin a timeout and poll for the services.
Could we have a situation that the service process is active (see it in task manager) but not started up completely? if yes, i guess then i have to check if the service is in state started or so.
Thx for the response.

Yes you could. The service might also be paused, or stopping, and the process would still be there...

Hi steve,
Sry, i go back to the problem.
I have another app. which i cannot modify and has the same problem.
the program is using 3 services, the XP system has autologin (admin account).
the program has a shortcut placed in the startup folder.
Is there a way to delay the startup?
