You should get Visual C#.NET standard version it's only $100 I bought that and Visual C++.NET standard (which is also only $100) becuase I am also on a very tight budget and only using it for learning purposes.

I bought an academic version which has just about everything for 100.00 at a local university. If you dont go to a university, find someone who does and have them purchace a copy for you. If you dont know anyone that goes to university, hang out next to the university book store and ask someone that is a student to buy it for you. They usually check school ID's for this because microsoft requires a copy.
Or you could always get the 60 day free trial from MS. I think its 10.00 for shipping.

Will running applications in the CLR environment on future versions of windows operatings systems [ones with .net framework built-in] yield a performance gain ?
I don't know enough about the internals, but it seems that there might be some advantages to the .net framework being built into the operating system, if not performance perhaps other advantages?
Thanks in advance.

I don't know about performance, but with .net framework size of file will become very small I THINK. Someone please correct me if I am wrong.

I don't care much of the size. I want speed! Does the CLR produce any overhead? Is the code really compiled and no interpretation of the code?

microsoft is working with intel to put make chips that can run IL directly.

Sounds cool.
I also heard that the new Intel/AMD processors will handle late binding (ie polymorphism) a LOT quicker. Not sure how, though.

Do you have any evidence of this? It seems very unlikely to me.

There is two modes of execution: JIT compiled and pre-JIT compiled, so, it's always compiled code running. Not so efficient as C++, but almost there...

Can you tell me an example of applications that run in the two modes?
What about Managed C++ and mixing managed with unmanaged code?
Thanks!

Any .NET application will run by default as JIT compiled.
If you run NGEN on that application, the framework will pre-compile it and the application startup time will be like a tradicional compiled one.

Does anybody know how I can get a list of all classes of the .NET framework, and if possibly their hierarchy?
Thanks!

Look them up with ildasm.exe which comes with the .NET framework.

How do I do that?

I need to learn some .net very quickly for a job. Is there somewhere i can get a trial copy or just a free copy of visual studio .net from? Large download is not an issue, just cost and time. I have visual studio 6, is there some sort of upgrade to .net? i have found very little information on visual studio .net.
Thanks.

Hello;
I want to update my XML file by MSXML. But i have no idea how can i do that. The main problem is, i don't want to save (or rewrite) whole XML file after update a record.
How can i update a record in XML file (I don't want to use DOM).
Thank you...

Why not? Using the DOM you can append a node into the location you desire, or to the end of the document.
Are you thinking of using SAX or reading the document as a stream? Using a stream you would need to read the document, make sure you don't write over exisiting data and insert your data, then write the stream. A lot simpler to InsertNode/AppendNode and save.

Does dotnet include anything to help licensing software? ¿Is there any class or tool that help creating shareware that could be activated with a serial number? ¿Is there any other approach to do this in dotnet?. Thanks

There are some classes to help with licensing of controls; but you still need to fill in the plumbing.
If you look at the System.ComponentModel.License class there is a link to more information regarding its usage.
