Depends.
If it's installed on your local machine with Windows Authentication:
Server = localhost - or if you're using Sql Server Express localhost\SqlExpress or if you named an instance during installation SqlExpress\TheNameYouChose (or just uninstall and do it again properly).
If you installed it locally, but used mixed mode authentication:
user name = sa
password = whatever you set it to be.
If you installed it on a networked machine:

You can connect to your local server by using "." Just type the "." in the name field and then login using credentials either "windows" or SQL.
Hope this helps.

I jsut moved to a company that uses Oracle for almost all their database stuff. Having never used PL/SQL and being used to SQL server, I'm on a bit of a learning curve. Even though I'm a decent T-SQL programmer, there's a bit to pick up, and I need to be productive quickly.
I reckon I need two things ;
A step-by-step introduction book, with real-world worked examples and the like, to get me going and give me the knowledge I need to do the job as quickly as possible, and;
A small reference guide to the PL/SQL language, to have at my desk 24/7 for when I need specific, indexed information on a subject.
Has anyone had any experience with Oracle or PL/SQL literature? Any recommendations?
All the dude ever wanted... was his rug back.

I presume he means a query that in its entirity is SELECT 1
It is, after all, a valid query. (By that I mean that SQL Server will process it and produce a result set from it)

I presume you found this in a stored procedure. It is often used to return a result back to the caller. It is especially useful when the stored procedure is invoked from a .NET application with ExecuteScalar()

I have two date pickers that can be selected by the user. If the span of these two dates fall between a specific date in the database, then a message should appear. I don't know know how to check these dates using SQL.
I know that I can check one date to be between two dates in the database, I just don't know how to check if any part of an entire date span falls between these values.
Please help!

I have two date-time pickers. One is the start date of an event, and the other end date.
If I want to add another event with a start date and an end date, then I must run an SQL statement to check if the new event date does not overlap the date of a previous event.
So far, I only know how to check whether the start date or end date of an existing row in the database is between the start date and end date of the new event. I need to check the complete date against the new event date. Thanks

I am not sure if I've got your concern at the right end, my apologies if I am wrong.
Probably you can introduce a new column in the dB indicating that the specified range of date(s) is/are already blocked for an event.

Its not really what I am looking for, but I am willing to try. Unfortunately, I don't know how to implement this. Thanks

Range comparisons are not that horrible if you break them down. In order for a range to overlap, the first requirement would be that the New.StartDate is less than (or equal too) the Stored.EndDate . If not, then they don't clash. If it is true, then see if the New.EndDate is greater than (or equal too) the Stored.StartDate . If this is also true, then you have an overlapping range.
In a stored proceedure it would look something like this:
IF EXISTS(SELECT *
FROM [MyTable]
WHERE
@StartDate <= [EndDate] AND
@EndDate >= [StartDate])
BEGIN
END
ELSE
BEGIN
END

What I do, with all the types of database I've yet encountered, is to use the DataReader's GetSchemaTable method.
(I use C#)
Open the connection -- con.Open() ;
Set the command -- cmd.CommandText = "SELECT * FROM table" ;
Use ExecuteReader -- reader = cmd.ExecuteReader() ;
Call GetSchemaTable -- table = reader.GetSchemaTable() ;
Cancel the Command -- cmd.Cancel ; (Not all databases support this.)
Close the DataReader -- reader.Close() ;
Close the connection -- con.Close() ;

like in ms-access , we link the two tables by connecting their id's , in the relationship form, there i select the tables and connect them by creating the primary and foreign relationships betweeb the id's.
Now my question is , is there any way to link the id's so that when i open the table , i can see the + sign , and after clicking the + sign , i get the information - correspondig to that id in sql server 2000

No you can't. You have to query against the table with the id to get the information.
