Hi,
I'm developing an add in for Powerpoint and i have run into some problems.
Powerpoint has opened a file which i need to replace (the file in question is a simple data file).
my app runs as an add in (dll loaded by powerpoint). so i should be able to close the aforementioned file from within powerpoint. i have seen some tools do this.
can anyone help me with unlocking the file (closing).
thanks

You have to replace a datafile that PowerPoint has opened?? What file is that?? Part of your presentation??
There is no way to SAFELY close the file without crashing the app that has it open. You didn't open the file, so you really don't have the rights to close it.

the file in question has been opened by a flash component inserted onto the slide.
during slide show when the flash component is active it opens the file. after slideshow it no longer remains active but doesnt release the handle it opened earlier. is there some notification from powerpoint to flash object when slide show ends, so that i could manually close the file.

You opened this Flash which in turn opened the data file. Why would you expect Powerpoint to then close a data file it never opened?

its right that i opened the file inside flash. but what i am expecting is when the slide show is over does powerpoint give me (Active Object : flash in this case) any signal that Show is over and you need to deactivate?

If you're using PP2007 then goto the developer tab and select controls on your ribbon. You should be able to find a control for what you want there...hopefully.

The question is "Does PowerPoint notify any compnents that the presentation is done??" No, it doesn't. The only time a component will get any notification is when it's unloaded when PowerPoint closes the presentation.

maybe i'll have to figure some other way out....
thanks anyway...

Hi!
I have several users connected through terminal services to a windows server 2003 64 bit. When a user sends some document to printer and tries to close session it hangs for several minutes.
After searching, i found some articles[^] pointing this issue. This occurs because there is a process (Splwow64.exe) that remains in memory for several minutes. This process is used to convert between 32 bit and 64 bit applications. This process remains in memory in order to increase system performance and unloads from memory after a specified time from the end of the last job. We can specify this time adding or editing the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Print\SplWOW64TimeOut (DWORD) and setting here the number of minutes to stay in memory before unloading.
Although this can be good for performance, it causes RDP sessions to hang when short time has passed after the user has done his last print and tries to close the session. The minimum value we can set SplWOW64TimeOut is 1. If we set it to 0, the application just hangs completely.
Is there any way to set this process to unload as soon as the job ends?

Hi, folks.
I have a new ASUS laptop. Recently a icon has begun to appear on my taskbar called "HViewer". It offers no context menu and double-clicking it does nothing. It does not appear in the TaskManager application list. It just sits there in my taskbar, mocking me!
How can I figure out what this thing is and if I don't need it, how can I get rid of it? I've searched the ASUS website and nothing shows up.

What have you done to your computer before this icon appear? Did you install any software or device driver?

Try to check in your control panel in add/remove program and find this icon name in the list of installed software. Or right click on your task bar and point to tool bar whether this application list in the tool bar. Hope this help

You can try using "services.msc" ............
startmenu ->run--> type "services.msc" . a window will appear....
check for the service with the name like "Hviewer",etc...if it exists right click it and stop the service...........

Run msconfig.exe. That will tell you all the apps that run on startup, and whether they are initiated as services, from the registry, or from the startup folder.

If it is in the taskbar as a running app, the SysInternals process explorer app can give you more info on what program is running.
If it is really in the Quick Launch section of the taskbar, those are links, displayed from directory %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\QuickLaunch. (%USERPROFILE% is usually C:\Documents and Settings\username.)

Nope. And it does not always show up.

Not there, either.

I did one better; I used autoruns from sysinternals. Nothing there named HViewer.

I'll give that (Process Explorer) a go next time it shows up. It does not appear at startup; only shows up later (sometimes).
Thanks for the help so far. You people are great!

To identify the one process connected to the icon you should try to identify all the other one's.
Take a list of processes running while it appears, subtract the ones you can identify, then subtract the system processes, then subtract the active programs that do not have a taskbar icon (100% positive), then from that list try to identify it.
Or take a screenshot of the icon and post it for all to see.

Well you must first take permission from the printer service on the other computer so your computer detect that printing is now priveleged from your computer via the other network one!!

Does your printer able to print on local attached printer? Is this problem just occure or it has a problem since windows install on this computer? If this problem occure since windows install on this computer, it mean that your windows installation file is corrupted or missing.

bootable? are you talking about autorun?
If yes you can add an autorun.inf that contain something like this code:
[AutoRun]
OPEN=MySetUpSubFolder\SetUp.exe
ICON=MyIcon.ico
(It will be execute only if the PC where you will insert the CD has autorun enabled.)

No, Russell' bootable means that when the PC is turned on it won't read operating system and start Windows for instance on drive C:\ but it will start by reading the very FIRST 512Kb Sector of the CD-ROM which contains a special program called the boot program and the BIOS is responsible for loading this program in memory and then this program will become in charge!
