If it's the only window open at the time, then yes, it will. Otherwise, no.

My install of IE has somehow got itself into a state whereby if I only have one window/instance/tab (IE7) of it open, and from that open either a popup (window.open(....)) or a new window (target="_bkank") via a link on that page, then close that second window, I find that my Session has been lost on the first app. I can work around it by always opening a second tab and just leaving it on About:blank or something, but it's a weird bug of some sort in my installation - maybe worth looking out for...

Thanks for the reply but, I have to rephrase or change my question.
In IE 7 it has a new feature to have a multi-tab on the browser, is there in any command when the user log off on the page it will closed the browser not only the particular tab.

No - and why should there be? If they have other windows open (on other sites) they don't want you to come along and close them! I'd be most annoyed if you did that to me!
If you want to end the session yourself, then use the Session.Abandon and/or Session.Clear methods.

we use the code javascript:window.close() to close the browser in IE 6
we try to use the same code IE 7 and i have 2 different site opened in one browser one site has a login page and i try to log out that page. there is another tab that was open then i try to go back to the page i already log out, when i click the page on the url it open again without going to login page.
anyway thanks for the advised i will try to use the command session.abandon

Closing the window doesn't end the session on the server, so you have had the sample problem all along, only you haven't noticed it because it's not as simple to keep several windows open in IE6 as in IE7.

how do we take session variables to the next page? The situation is :-
there are 3 pages: 1. UserLogin.aspx
2. UserInfo.aspx
3. Map.aspx
I have created a session variable in UserLogin.aspx (Session["UserID"]). The session variable is being accessed from UserInfo.aspx. But when i access it from Map.aspx, the session is lost and it return null as it takes the value from global.asax where the variable is initialised to null. If i assign it a value in global.asax, the it is accessible in Map.aspx. i need to know if there is a way to assign a value to the session variable on the fly.

Well, yes - the way you have done it in UserLogin, I presume - simply set it to what you want; eg:
Session["UserID"] = 123
If you can't then access this value from another page then something screwy is going on. Hard to say what without seeing all your code... how are you setting/reading them? How and where (in what Sub) are you initialising it in global.asax? What are your Session settings in web.config. Are you opeining new (target="_blank" or popup) windows inbetween? (I ask this because my install of IE will lose session when such are closed if there is no other window open - it's a weird bug as far as I can tell) - but generally speaking you should of course be able to set Session variables in one page and read them on another - that is the point of them!

i have a section in my web.config file that enables sending mails to users .. it works fine when i try it locally .. but after uploading it, it gives me an error!

anybody knows on http://www.vwdhosting.net how to use PasswordRecovery to send mails to users with their new password? is there a specific setting for "SMTP" or something like that?
the mail is sent successfully "locally" with the previous settings i've mentioned

Find a different hosting company? Seriously, if you aren't able to deliver an email message to them there are probably bigger problems going on. I've never heard of this hosting company before so I don't know anything about their history.
What is the error you receive when trying to send the email through your web application?

I agree, and there are plenty of other good hosting companies out there. I'll stick to http://www.bluedomino.com[^], they are pretty okay.

it's a site powered by Microsoft (Trial Hosting for visual web developer 2005 express) .. it's a great site .. but, i don't know their mail settings .. i'm contacting them through their technical support page .. but, everytime i receive a "failure in delivering" msg!!

Hey,
I am posting this to hear peoples thoughts on different Internet Browsers.
The two i am going to name are 'Mozilla Firefox' which i am currently using and 'Microsoft Internet Explorer'
I prefer Mozilla Firefox because:
1. It has a built in spell checker.
2. If it crashes you can restore your last browsing session.
3. It seems to be faster than Microsoft Internet Explorer
Well that is all i can think of at the moment.
Please reply with your thoughts, and any other points you have about the two different browsers.

I have found that most people's preferences in this matter have less to do with the browsers themselves, and more to do with their quasi-political views vis-a-vis Microsoft...

When browsing? Can't say I've noticed that. But IE definitely first loads from cold MUCH faster than FF on my machine.
I prefer to use IE for browsing because it's more forgiving of )other people's!) bad code and therefore displays more sites better than any other browser. And I don't like the way FF displays (by default, ie unstyled) form fields (text boxes etc) - I just think they're ugly in comparison to IE.
For dev work, I use both, as I need to make sure my work is cross-browser compliant. I do like FF's Firebug though - that is seriously useful.

Not so much crashing as closing without the user closing it correctly, like a fault in explorer or something.
Firefox also has the built in autofill which is very useful if you are sick of filling in your name and address many times over.
Although IE served me well the 3 years i used it, i have it installed and use it sometimes.

Hi all,
well I've just started to learn ASP .NET now and I'm gonna be starting to make a project in it for the sake of learning. I was wondering how some websites (like Yahoo mail!) implement several different color schemes for their interfaces.
Can anyone give a general idea about this and how to approach such a problem?

Couldn't tell you with 100% certainty how they do it, but it is generally done using different CSS stylesheets. Create a stylesheet for each theme you want, pick one as the default, and then apply that stylesheet to your page. When a different theme is selected, you can reload the page with the new stylesheet applied (that's the easiest way, but not necessarily the most user-friendly approach).

yea it seems to be a likely solution Scott. I think they would be storing the prefered style in the database or something to make this preference saved for future use.
but still some advanced features do make question marks in my mind ??

Storing the preferred style in a database would be good to provide the same experience anytime the user logs in. The other option would be storing it in a cookie, but that becomes machine specific.

The advanced features I was talking abt were... well if u must have seen the myYahoo page now and it offers you IFrames (I think) in which it shows u many different modules like horoscope, sports news etc etc and you can customize the modules as well as their placement which is something really nice! but I was wondering how they manage to do all these things.
