Hi everyone,
Please forgive me if this seems like a dumb question. I'm not very familiar with web development so whilst I go trawling the web for answers I thought I put up a quick post to see if anyone out there could help...
Since a member of our team left I've been asked to look at a problem with our Internet Explorer based windows app and I'm not really too sure a) exactly what the problem is and b) how to fix it.
When our app is minimised and an event causes the page to reload the text shrinks so that when the page is restored the text is unreadable. As soon as the page is reloaded the normal text size is restored. In the template for all pages is some script that is called from the body tags' onresize event handler that I think applies:
function SetTextSize()<br />
{<br />
document.styleSheets[0].rules[0].style.fontSize = document.body.offsetWidth/40;<br />
}
I believe this is a way of dynamically resizing the text depending upon the width of the window, however it is though the width of the window becomes very small when minimised, hence the text shrinking. Does anybody know if this is a stadard thing to do? Is there a better way to do it that will maintain the dynamic resizing of text but not shrink the text when the page is minimised?

I've never seen anyone do anything like that before. I'd ditch it. Seems like an obvious way to solve the problem.
Or even just have code so it doesn't go below a certain base level.

Having looked around the web I've seen a couple of examples where it's done. I've looked a little closer at my template and realised why it won't work. There is a body tag 'onresize' event handler that calls the SetTextSize function but that isn't working, presumably because it's not valid html anymore. This should overcome the small font problem because the resize event will be fired when the page is maximised (I think) and so reset the font size. I think a new valid implementation of the resize event should be implemented in the form of:
window.onresize = function;
I have tried this and it won't work for me either. Any guesses? I've included the code for reference.

<script type="text/javascript" src="css?selectbuttons.js"></script><br />
<script type="text/javascript" language="javascript"><br />
<br />
function LoadActions()<br />
{<br />
SetTextSize();<br />
window.navigate('event?IP=PAGELOAD');<br />
}<br />
<br />
function SetTextSize()<br />
{<br />
document.styleSheets[0].rules[0].style.fontSize = document.body.offsetWidth/40;<br />
}<br />
<br />
window.onresize = SetTextSize;<br />
<br />
</script><br />
</head><br />

Christian's suggestion was good - ditch the technique. I'd be very annoyed with a website if it started changing the size of fonts when I resized the browser, and would more than likely never use it again.
Also, I'm not sure if you're aware, but the onload attribute is spelled önload (note the umlaut)

Ok guys, thanks very much for your help. I've taken your advice and I'm going for a font defined by the fixed screen width.
Cheers,
Chris.

HI,
We have an application which was developed in Java for this we provided a web service using .net this web service basically helps in converting documents to pdf format.
Everything works fine however the issue is with anonymous access given to the web service. The client feels it could be a threat and wants us to remove the anonymous access to the web service.
On doing so there is no communication betwwen the application and the web service.
Question: ON removing anonymous access what are the other steps that i should follow at the application level and at the web service level.

Hello,
I am a total noob to VS.NET so please forgive my ignorance...
My environment is: Windows Vista Business, and Microsoft Visual Studio.NET 2005 Professional Edition, with SQL Server Developer Edition 2005 installed (the disc for SQL Server Developer came with the VS.NET 2005 discs).
When I follow the steps below, the process fails:
1. Open VS.NET
2. I click the File menu, click New, and then click Project.
3. I click Visual C# in the Project Types pane.
4. I click ASP.NET Web Application in the Templates pane.
5. I type 'MyASPNET' for the project name (I'm not picky, folks)
6. I click OK.
7. I click the Project menu, and then click Add New Item.
8. In the Templates box, I click SQL Database.
9. In the Name edit box, I type 'MySample.mdf,' and I then click Add.
10. Visual Studio displays the following prompt:
<quote>You are attempting to add a .mdf to an ASP.NET Web Application. For a .mdf to be generally consumable in your web application, it should be placed inside the 'App_Data' folder. Would you like to place the .mdf in the 'App_Data' folder?
This seems like a Good Thing, so I click Yes.
11. Then Visual Studio.NET 2005 displays the following message:
<quote>Connections to SQL Server files (*.mdf) require SQL Server Express 2005 to function properly. Please verify the installation of the component or download from the URL: [omitted]
The only option is to choose OK. So I do so.
And then I am bounced back to the Add New Item box.
I am doing these steps because I want to learn databases etc and I am following tutorials.
I have SQL Sever Developer Edition 2005 installed, shouldn't that be good enough to make adding new .mdf files in VS.NET work? How do I point VS.NET to know that a SQL Server is in fact installed?
Thank you for any help in advance.
Sincerely Yours,

This is an access file.

I would always create my database through writing SQL scripts, not by letting the IDE do it. Then you can recreate your DB by running those scripts, any time you like. I would do it in the SQL Server IDE, not Visual Studio.

I am not communicating clearly...
What I am wanting to do is just use the IDE for everything cuz I am lazy
SO what seems to be my problem is it seems like the VS.NET IDE only will work with SQL Server Express...if you've got Developer Edition installed, you're screwed. Does that pretty much sum it up?
Or is there a setting or Registry key I can tweak to get the VS.NET IDE to 'play nice' with SQL Server Developer Edition?
I just hate to think that Microsoft went to all the trouble of making up a special, "Developer" edition of SQL Server only to have the VS.NET IDE refuse to even work with anything else other than SQL Server Express.
Brian

this is what i am doing:
query the database to return 100 records into a dataset
then binding to a grid and enabling paging, with a page size of 3.
when changing page all 100 records are rebound to the grid
what i want to do:
to improve efficiency
query the database to return 100 records into a dataset
then binding to a grid and enabling paging, with a page size of 3 AND just send the 3 records to the users gridview, then when page 2 is requested just send the second page of data (records 4,5,6) to the grid from the dataset.
Thanks

If you are using asp.net 2.0 you can use a sqldatasource and turn on caching. If you are using asp.net 1.1 you can use a cache object to hold the dataset. Check to see if it is in the cache if it is use it if not then re-query for the data.
Hope that helps.

The url you have above for you web service is on your local PC port (7001). This is not available to anyone outside your PC. You will need to install your web service on a web service that has the correct dns entries so that othere systems can access the web service and use it.
Hope that helps.

Hi,
I'm trying to pass a text input box to an activex control, written in C#, but I keep getting "class doesn't support automation". Is it not possible to pass html element instances to activex controls? If it is, what type should the C# UserControl use as its parameter?
Thanks for any info!

Actually i have some URL Normalization issues but can you please tell me what more should i consider while normalizing the URLs. Like for example right now i am following these rules:
1. Converting the URL to lowercase.
2. Removing the fragment.
3. Removing the default port.
4. Removing the www part like http://www.example.com to http://example.com
5. Adding the trailing slash.
Now what else should I follow in order to make a URL a unique URL to Crawl. Thanks for your cooperation.

What exactly do you mean by making a unique URL for crawling? Your normalization process seems to turn a valid URL into one that may or not may not be valid.
