What is the difference between membership and roles? As a newbie, I don't really see how/when you would choose one over the other, or both. Any info on this would be appreciated.
Thanks.

To answer shortly: membership refers to users, role to a group of users.
Consider to following scenario: a website has both registered users and editors. You assign the role 'User' for the former group, and 'Editor' for the latter. After that you can do authorization checks based on the users' role. Also if for example you hire a new editor and create a user account for him, you don't have to set his rights explicitly. Just add him to the 'Editor' role, and he'll have all the rights as any other editor.

1. We don't care if it is urgent.
2. Use plain English--not text speak.
3. Don't mix upper and lower cases. It's annoying.

Thank you for ur help

You are not the type of person whom my blog is for.
My blog is for people with an IQ above 60. You do not qualify.

is it really for the ones that r above 60 that means u don't qualify either. at least I'm in the neighborhood of 60 u r in the neighborhood of 0 or -1 maybe.

Start by getting a degree in genetics. Once you've got your degree, move onto the PhD, then once you've got that you need to get attached to a lab that specializes in table cloning. I know this isn't quite as fast as you want, considering it's UrGeNT, but you'll feel so much better in the end.

is that a joke or something
While You = not understand
if u = did that then
u = f***ed up
else
u = try new jokes
end if
end while
is that clear enough or should I repeat it slower.

OK - perhaps if I explain it slowly to you, you might understand.
1. Don't put urgent in a title. All posts are urgent to somebody and this doesn't help you.
2. Learn to use google (or the search engine of your choice). I did this as a sample for you and got the following results[^].
3. Rather than curse at you or punish you for this, I gave you the benefit of the doubt and used a bit of humour. Obviously, it was way too subtle for you, so next time I'll resort to cruder humour. Perhaps you can cope with that.
Is that clear enough, or should I repeat it slower?

can u explain it slower with more details plz coz as u may have noticed I would rather waist ur time on thoughtless things.
if I had found what I wanted on google I would have used it and I wouldn't post it here for no good reason.
so next time if you can't help don't post anything it's better.
thank you for ur help.
but the results u posted don't help me. anyway thank you.

I have thisclass:
Public Class Messageboard
Public Shared Function GetBoards() As ArrayList
Dim list As New ArrayList()
Dim sql As String
Dim myData As Data.DataSet
Dim myRow As DataRow
sql = "SELECT [BoardName] FROM [Board] ORDER BY [BoardName] Asc"
myData = DataControl.GetDataSet(sql)
For Each myRow In myData.Tables(0).Rows
Dim myBoard As Board
myBoard = New Board(CStr(myRow("BoardName")))
list.Add(myBoard)
Next myRow
Return list
End Function
End Class
And it is returning an error on Borardname
myBoard = New Board(CStr(myRow("BoardName")))
as too many argument to public sub new().

Is there a constructor for Board that accepts 1 (string) argument? If not, you need to create one.

this is my constructor:
Public Sub New(ByVal myrow As Data.DataRow)
inflate(myrow)
End Sub
the inflate function is defined separately, any hint
Private Sub inflate(ByVal myRow As Data.DataRow)
mPostID = CLng(myRow("PostID"))
mPostSubject = CStr(myRow("PostSubject"))
mPostBody = CStr(myRow("PostBody"))
mCreator = New User(myRow)
mPostDate = CDate(myRow("PostDate"))
End Sub

Your constructor accepts a single DataRow parameter. However in your first post, you were trying to call the constructor with a string value. Obviously you can't do this. Fix the code that calls the constructor to pass a DataRow object instead.

IIRC, you have to force a postback...

If you are using AJAX then the only way i have found yet to give an alert to a user on return to the Asynchronous post back is to add an "end request" handler to the PageRequestManager.
In this way you can tell the request manager to run a javascript function on returning from a Asynchronous post back event of AJAX.
Code for doing this is :
function load()
{
Sys.WebForms.PageRequestManager.getInstance().add_endRequest(EndRequestHandler);
}
where "EndRequestHandler" will be the name of your javascript function you want to call.
Call the above function in Onload event of tag:
function EndRequestHandler()
{
alert("You record has been saved successfully");
}
Now If you want to give a different message based on your logic in server side code (code behind) then you can use a server side Hidden Field:
Set its value in server side code on Asychronous Post Back:
Protected Sub btn_Click(ByVal sender As Object, ByVal e As System.EventArgs) Handles btnCreateSample.Click
If condition Then
hdnValue.value = "do this"
Else
hdnValue.value = "do that"
End If
End Sub
Now you can check the value of this Hidden Field in your Client Side EndRequestHandler function and give a different alert to user based on its value:
function EndRequestHandler()
{
if (document.getElementById('<%= hdnValue.ClientID %>').value == "do this")
{
alert("You record has been saved successfully");
}
else
{
alert("There is an error");
}
}

your post is ambiguous. Are you trying to ask or tell?
If you are asking about how to call a javascript function after updating a update panel then use the scriptmanager e.g.
<br />
ScriptManager.RegisterStartupScript(idOfTheUpdatepanel, GetType(UpdatePanel), "scriptkey", javascriptFunctionOrScriptToBeCalled, True);<br />

Hi
guys i am facing problem with drop down list in data grid , drop down list is placed in data grid , when the user scrolls the grid vertically down o ther controls present in grid goes beneath the data grid header but drop down list goes above the data grid header, i know this problem is due to windowed control Z-Index issue in IE 6.0, do any one have any idea how to control it, is there any way it can be done with CSS, thankx in advance,

Are you using Fixed Header Grid?
|

Yup man i am using fix header in data grid.

I think you are using style sheet to fix the datagrid header. It is not possible to hide the drop down lists with just the z-index. Instead you have to use iframe to hide them. You will be setting the z-index for iframe greater than the drop down lists and z-index for your header row will be greater than the iframe. And then you will have to reposition/resize the iframe to go right beneath the header row. This way you will be able to hide the drop down lists.
If I am getting you right then I will suggest to use a separate table with just one row on top of data grid. And then on load get the header row from data grid and add it to the table. I have done it this way. There is quite a lot of javascript involved to achieve this. But if you search online you should be able to find articles.
