Being out of school, I'm looking for ways to keep my skills sharp and I need to find a way to practice my skills with ASP.NET at home. I know I can get Visual Web Developer for free from Microsoft, but I believe I'd need IIS to be able to write my own ASP.NET apps. Essentially, my question is, is there a free/trial copy of IIS that I can use for my home system?

If you have Windows XP you should be able to install IIS from Control Panel->Add Remove Program. On this screen you will see Add/Remove Windows Components on the left. Click it and Windows Components Wizard runs. You check Internet Information Services and then next till the wizard finishes. It requires Windows XP installation to be available.
I hope this helps.

Visual studio express edition comes with it's own built in server. XP home edition has no ISS.

Sadly, yes I do have XP home and not pro, however, would it be possible to obtain IIS from an XP Pro disc? If not, then I guess that's a good reason to upgrade. I'll see what I can do.

No. Have your tried VS2005 ? It comes with an integrated development server, which may install on XP home. Try your luck.

I don't have the money for a license of VS 2005 unless I can find it for free someplace. Otherwise I can just save for it, I got 2003 on my machine but I don't believe it has an IDS but it's been awhile since I've tried doing ASP.NET on my machine. Oh well, thanks for your input, I appreciate it.

You have Express editions. It's all free. Download the latest Visual Webdeveloper 2008 version and try. It also comes with integrated development server.

Can anyone explains how the logics work behind social networking
and show me a simple code/project on how social networking works on asp.net/vb?

It's simple - you have users, they can link to each other.

Social Networking is not specific to ASP.NET technology. It can be build in any web technology. You are posting your questing on such a site and asking someone to explain how it works. No one here has ready-made code on social networking site and neither you will find on the Net. You can check here to understand how Forum/Message board system works,Internal Messaging and rating system works. After that your are on your way to write your own logic, design....

There are AJAX controls that show progress bars while uploading, it's not really a simple task.

I am developing a website(File system), in that I am using a grid view control. In the code behind file, I am using gridview control's rowDeleting event. When the user clicks delete button , I am displaying a messagebox asking whether to delete or not. When I am running from source it works fine.
But after publishing my website, from the published pages, when I click the delete button, I am getting the following error.
"showing a model dialog box or form when the application is not running in user interactive mode is not a valid operation. Specify the serviceNotification or DefaultDesktopOnly Style to display a notification from a service application."
How can I resolve this problem?
thank u all,
kiran

Hi Kiran,
What is the purpose of displaying this messagebox?
Please remember that your code is running on a server and how will this code interact with your user's dekstop.
Instead of doing this way, I would suggest you to please use client side javascripting.

Hi All,
I am using monthname() function for particular boundfield for a gridview in ASP.NET2.0.
When I display it It shows "system.byte[]" in the cell instead of particular Month name.
I am using MySQL database and the command is
"SELECT MONTHNAME(sales.issuedate) AS 'Month', Count(Month (date(sales.issuedate))) AS 'Sale' From sales Group by Month(date(sales.issuedate))"
I look for the solution on the NET but no luck.
Please help me out.

Hi G,
I am displaying the data in a boundfield of a GridView. There is no error. It works fine. But It just does not showing the right format of the result. The result should be the name of the months.
But It is showing "System.Byte[]" instead.
<asp:GridView ID="GridView1" runat="server" DataSourceID="SqlDataSource1" AutoGenerateColumns="False"><br />
<Columns><br />
<asp:BoundField DataField="Month" HeaderText="Month" SortExpression="Month" /><br />
<asp:BoundField DataField="Sale" HeaderText="Sale" SortExpression="Sale" /><br />
</Columns><br />
</asp:GridView>
The result
---------------------------------¬
Months ¦ Number of Sales ¦
--------------¦------------------¦
System.Byte[] ¦ 11 ¦
--------------¦------------------¦
System.Byte[] ¦ 37 ¦
----------------------------------
