hi
i try to run my Program on PPC and i get this error:
Can't find PInvoke DLL sqlceme53.dll
what can it be ?
|
|
|
|

This generally indicates that you haven't installed the SQL Server Compact Edition runtime. Ensure that the appropriate CAB is installed on the device. You can find the CABs under C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server Compact Edition\v3.5\Devices, then under the appropriate CE major version (wce400 or wce500), then the processor type.
Windows Mobile 2003 Pocket PCs are based on Windows CE 4.2, so you should use wce400\armv4\sqlce.ppc.wce4.armv4.CAB. For Windows Mobile 5.0 or 6 Pocket PCs, use wce500\armv4i\sqlce.ppc.wce5.armv4i.CAB.
See also http://blogs.msdn.com/sqlservercompact/archive/2007/10/26/can-t-find-p-invoke-dll-sqlcemenn-dll.aspx[^].
Generally when faced with an error message I normally just put the error message string into a search engine. It would also help you if you noted down the error message correctly - sqlceme53.dll would refer to the non-existent 5.3 version of SQL Server Compact Edition, the DLL name is sqlceme35.dll (for 3.5).

Hi guys
I have been trying to write a code that gets and sets the size of the virtual memory paging file in Windows CE 6.0 ( for smart devices ).
Is it even possible? if so then how is it done? any API functions? or ...? please help me out
|
|
|
|

There isn't one. Windows CE does not page to storage. It is still demand-paged, pages are only fetched from storage or allocated when touched, and pages that haven't been written to can be discarded, plus memory-mapped file pages can be discarded once written back. But private pages that have been written to are not written out to a page file, they stay in main memory.
This is because the traditional primary storage for a Windows CE device is RAM. Writing a copy to a page file simply uses twice as much RAM. It's faster and simpler to keep the data in program memory in the first place.
The division between RAM used for running programs, and RAM used for storage, can be changed at runtime. The API is named SetSystemMemoryDivision. The default division is up to the OEM but is typically 50/50 - half given to programs, half to storage.
Windows Mobile 5.0 and later support Persistent Storage, and I believe it's an option for custom CE platforms. Here, the root file system is actually implemented on Flash, but there's still no support for paging.

Mobile device development is not difficult at all to get started at. VS2005 will work great, but I highly recommend you check out Visual Studio 2008 which just hit RTM not that long ago. VS 2008 supports .Net 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 on the desktop and 2.0 or 3.5 on the mobile device right out of the box. You do File -> New Project -> Smart Device -> Smart Device Project. The wizzard will then ask you what your target platform is (Pocket PC 2003, WM5, WM6, etc) and what type of project. You can test your project with the built-in emulator, or if you have your device conneted throug ActiveSync (XP) or Sync Center (Vista) you can run your program and debug it right on the device. You can even set breakpoints and do variable evaluation just like you would a local desktop .Net app.
The only additional things you might need to download are device-specific skins for the emulator. But that's only if you want the emulator to look like your device and be able to simulate hardware button presses, etc. If you're debugging on the actual device that's not required.
There are a lot of great 'getting started' videos available here:
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/netframework/bb495180.aspx[^]
Some great tutorials here:
http://netcf2.blogspot.com/[^]
And finally, a great starting reference here:
http://samples.gotdotnet.com/quickstart/compactframework/[^]
Good luck!

I have a basic requirement to detect PSW files received on a laptop from PPC's, and merge them into a single DOC file on the laptop. What are the logistics involved in this, and where can I start looking?

As far as I know Microsoft have never documented either PSW or DOC file formats, so you're out of luck there.
If I had to do this, I'd look at setting up ActiveSync to sync the My Documents folder (check 'Files' in the Sync Options tab of the Options dialog), which should (I think) automatically convert the PSWs to DOCs. You'd then need to detect changes to files in this folder (perhaps a FileSystemWatcher?) and probably automate Word to actually merge the documents.

Hi,
I have requirement to get the name of the calling class. I have a logger class which is accessed by number of classes. Each time a call is made to a method in Logger class it needs to find out the calling class.
The following code works fine but StackTrace class cannot be used in mobile applications. Is there any alternative approach?
<br />
public static string GetClassName()<br />
{<br />
string name = String.Empty;<br />
int nStackCnt = 0;<br />
StackTrace oStack = new StackTrace(true);<br />
try<br />
{<br />
nStackCnt = oStack.FrameCount;<br />
int i = -1;<br />
if (nStackCnt > 2)<br />
{<br />
name = oStack.GetFrame(2).GetMethod().ReflectedType.FullName;<br />
}<br />
return name;<br />
}<br />
catch (Exception ee)<br />
{<br />
throw ee;<br />
}<br />
}<br />
Thanks,
Venkatesh
