My layout defaults to Expand Root Messages. I hate this; it makes the current and next thread hard to distinguish. I can't seem to change the Layout back to Normal.

Hi Chris. Thanks for looking into this.
The standard entry is true.
A couple of things I have noticed which may or may not be relevant...
1. I have tried this with three operating systems. I get Expand Root Message with Vista and XP Professional, but not with XP Home. Standard comes up true in all three cases (and I am using IE7 in all 3 cases).
2. When the layout is Expand Root Message, sometimes the last message in the thread is not viewable --- it is listed but you cannot click on it to see what it says. In such cases, refreshing the page makes the last message viewable.

I just installed the latest updates for XP Home (I have a dual boot system and hadn't booted into it in several weeks). Now XP Home is behaving the same as the other two. Looks like the issue has to do with a recent Windows update.

When clicking the "add bookmark" button on an article, it gets reloaded with a slightly
different URL
example[^]
this has some consequences:
1.
one has to click the browser's BACK button twice to go to whatever was the previous
page; the first of these clicks probably causes a third load of the article (poor hamsters).
2.
if one wants to bookmark inside the browser too (say Add to Favorites in IE), then
the longer URL may be stored, which is not really what was wanted. The longer URL
works, but it is just too long.

I thought we were only allowed one vote per message? I just voted twice for the same message, with no way to "undo" a vote. (I thought I saw that feature during the beta.)

Hi Scott,
I think this actually is a new feature; I just voted your message three times, first 5,
then 1, now 3. It currently shows 3 with 1 vote.
There has been a request to be able to modify one's own vote (in case an article does not
sound as good on a second read as it did originally), and maybe Chris & Co found a way
to implement exactly that.

I am pretty sure that this was more explicit than that in the beta version, but I could be mistaken. As long as it doesn't change the vote count it shouldn't cause problems.

Spam is an additional filter/flag right? You can vote 1 and also additionally report it as Spam/Abuse, as the message confirmation that popups up indicate.

I see the site has undergone some redesign.
Would be nice to be able to view all bookmarks or view all in selected category. I don't want to click next, next, next... to find the bookmark that I want.

There can be too moany bookmarks to be viewed all on one page.
But we will probbaly add some search options there, as well as order by date added. Will that work?

Yes. Search option would be appreciated.
But another suggestion would be that when you click a bookmarked category topic, show all bookmarks in that category. Or show all bookmarked categories on the initial bookmarks page. As it currently is, only categories for bookmarks shown on the current bookmark page is shown at the top. But then again, I suppose some people have tons of bookmarks in certain categories.
Well, in that case, it might be nice to view bookmarks filtered/sorted by category (though not all shown on 1 page)

Bookmarks are already sorted by categories.
And I do like the idea of having all categories shown on the initial bookmark page.

I suppose that article voting is a really great feature but it can be misused/abused in some cases.
For example, while some Competition goes, it can be used to dislodge an article from "Best Picks" section at Home page. If someone votes "1", the total rating significantly reduces and presumably good article is removed from the main showcase (even if all previous 20 readers gave "4"s and "5"s!) Consecuently, far far less people will read and vote for the article afterwards.
But do not get me wrong! I am not arainst any votes! However, in some cases it can be DELIBERATELY used for UNRELATED purposes.
I suggest that a person who makes "downgrade" vote ("1" or "2") must be asked for leaving his comment/reason of the mark.
P.S.
Showing number of votes for every mark point (like in some MSDN articles) would be also great.

The above effect is somehow reduced by vote weighting.

Rating is the sum of all votes divided by the number of votes. Voting can only be done by registered members and a persons vote is weighted by their level.
If I remember well, Colin Angus Mackay told me that membership level vote is weighted in a (2 based) exponential way, i.e. 1 for bronze level members, 2 for silver ones, 4 for gold ones and so one (the exact weight numers maybe are different, but that should be the approach).

AFAIK MVP is now only an award, hence it has nothing to do with the weights, it is just the membership level that matters.

MVP awarding here has been there for a long time. What's new is the MVPs get a cool new icons now. AFAIK, MVP votes have a more significant impact than others, both on the forums and on articles.
