I'm not sure if this would be the right forum (though I would think so). But I just got a new computer. It's MUCH, MUCH better than my old one. LoL. I'd like to keep my old harddrive along with the new one. The new one is WinXP Pro SP2, and the old one is Win2K Pro SP4. I have my old harddrive plugged in using 'Cable Select', and it's picked up as the primary slave.
If I change the boot order in BIOS, and attempt to boot from my Win2K HDD, I get a blue screen saying "INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE" and a bunch of other text. I didn't figure it'd work. But I don't necessarily know why either.
Is there a way that I can boot from either HDD? If so, I will upgrade my Windows 2000 HDD to WinXP Pro SP2 as well. Most of my applications are installed on the Windows 2000 HDD, but I installed my VS .NET 2005 Pro to my new HDD. But I do quite a bit of music production also. I wanted to use my new HDD strictly for programming and music, and use my old one for misc. things. Is this possible?
Would it be an issue with the hardware? I'm using the same graphics card (swapped it out), but the motherboard, processor, audio card, etc., are not the same (of course =P).

This typically means that either the new platform or the old (or both) requires a non-standard disk driver. When Windows boots, the initial boot loader has to be able to read the disk in protected mode (where it can't drop back to an add-in ROM) at a point where it only has the capability of reading the root directory, and when it hasn't yet loaded the registry. To do this, either the disk must be connected to a legacy hard disk controller or register compatible (such as on-board non-RAID IDE or SATA) or there must be a copy of the disk (controller) driver copied to ntbootdd.sys in the root of the boot partition.
Alternatively it may be as simple as the line in boot.ini referring to the old location of the drive, for example if it was the primary master in the old system but is now primary slave.
You can typically do a repair install of the OS to fix this. Boot from the install CD, hit F6 to select an additional drivers required, insert the driver floppy when prompted, then select to install or upgrade (not the first Repair option), then select the location of your old Windows installation and choose to reinstall over the top. This will cause setup to write a new ntbootdd.sys driver, if needed, or fix up the line in boot.ini if that's the problem. It'll also re-do all of the hardware detection so you shouldn't have any more problems with incorrect drivers.

If I'm not mistaken, you can only boot a Windows partition from a master drive. Or at least, the boot sector must reside on the master drive; given that, booting multiple operating systems from multiple disks will be difficult, but dual booting from one master disk is easy.
Anyway, I think to answer your question, you need to change the jumper on the drive to "Master" to get the drive to boot properly, but just know that only that partition will boot, you will not be able to select the other operating system (whichever it may be).
If you want to dual boot both XP Pro and W2k, repartition your master drive the way you want (minimum of 2 partitions). Now install W2k FIRST onto the FIRST partition on the disk. Now install XP Pro onto the SECOND partition on the disk.
You can use the remaining portion of the first disk and all of the second disk for additional storage.
XP Pro will rewrite the boot sector of the disk and will recognize the W2k partition as bootable and will add it to the boot menu. The only thing you need to know now is that ALL post-BIOS and pre-Windows boot management is handled by the XP Pro installation.

Hi,
I write a, ATL Server Web server(ISAPI include in same DLL) i have theses files:
- VectWebSrv.disco
- VectWebSrv.dll
- VectWebSrv.htm
I test it on my Xp Pro it work fine, i made client with MFC and C# (Web Application (ASPX)), both applications can access it...
Now it try to install it on Win2K3 Web Server (et c'est le drame !).
Result:
I can see the page with url (IE is launch on server): VectWebSrv.htm.
But when i try to get WSDL XML file from VectWebSrv.dll using : http://localhost/VectWebSrv/VectWebSrv.dll?Handler=WSDL
=> On Xp : It work...
=> On Win2K3 : The page cannot be found ... HTTP Error 404 - File or directory not found...
Server Config from blank install on VMWARE.
1) I use a video from MS Lab to configure IIS and ASP.NET.
2) I create the same directory than in my XP for the web service and copy files...
3) With inetmgr.exe I add "Virtual directory" for my web service using same parameter than i my xp
- I use DefaultAppPool for protection.
4) I add user IIS_WPG to directory security (Read&Execute\List Folder Contents\Read)
Can anyone help me ?

No. When you run explorer.exe while one instance is already running, the newly created instance would signal the already running instance of the executable to create an explorer window and then the new instance would quit on its own.

Hi,
I have windows xp-sp2.I have a on-board Ethernet card.my system is not connected to the network.
I shared a folder in My machine and tried to access the folder by typing the systemname in run like \\node1\share ,so that i get the share open. but it displayed a message the machine in offline or the network down.
what can i do to access the share without network. just like local host 127.0.0.1

I'm sure I don't understand your question. I have one of my own though: Why do you need a share on your compter if you are not on a network?

Hi, in my lab i have windows 2000 domain controler with some user name in AD. I also apply the permission to some file on that DC. Now I have install win 2003 DC on the new pc for testing and i want to transfer all of user account from the old DC (win 2000). Could anyone please let me know how could i do that because i have a problem when i try to copy the data and want all the permission on win 2000 is correctly apply on win 2003 DC machine?

If you create the new domain controller in the same domain as the old one, as an additional domain controller, you automatically get a replicated copy of the user accounts. I would strongly recommend doing it this way. Otherwise you will have to rejoin all of your workstations to the new domain as well, and all users' local profiles will then become disconnected from their accounts too.
In the main, Active Directory is a multi-master system - the DCs are peers and updates can be made on any DC. If you later plan to decommission the old DC there are a few roles, which only run on a single DC (for example, schema master and NT4 PDC-compatibility), which you will have to transfer. This can be done (IIRC) in Active Directory Domains and Trusts. You should also make your new DC a Global Catalog server.
The regular Windows Explorer copy process does not copy the security on files, if I recall correctly. When transferring to our new DC recently, we initially used xcopy and when we had some trouble with that, causing the 70GB copy to stop, used Robocopy from the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit Tools[^], which supports detecting unchanged files and restarting copy operations. Those tools support copying the existing Access Control Lists (ACLs). For xcopy use the /O switch, while for Robocopy use /SEC.

My advice is to back up your important data before trying anything. I've lost all data several times trying stuff like this... Can you connect the drive to a properly functioning PC and copy everything there?
What did you use to change the drive letter to J? Did you delete the C partition?
(I'm not really an expert on this, so maybe better to wait for more replies...)

Windows locks the two partitions that is uses to start up, though these can be the same partition. The first is the Boot partition. In your case, the C: drive. This is used to start the boot process and start loading the system files. The second in the System partition, your J: drive, where the Windows system files are stored.
You really don't have any good choices but to reinstall Windows, and during the installation, delete the partition you want to format. You can recreate a new partition and format it after Windows has been installed. Be warned, all your drive letters will change.

The drive letters will get new assignments automatically when you reinstall Windows.

Only if they are contiguous on disk, or can be made contiguous. There is software out there that will do it, like Partition Magic, by moving the existing partitions around.

I have no idea what you've managed to do, but if Windows is corrupted, reinstalling Windows is your best bet - and that doesn't need an Admin account.
