If you know WHAT a programmer does, then the HOW is easily answered.

I'm new to Visual C++ and am creating a windows form application.
I was wondering if it was possible to link a console application which is written in C but stored in C++ files to a windows form?
So for example if I clicked a button in the Windows Form application then this would run the console application?

Can you be more specific.

Answered in your repost. Which I should not have done. You did the right thing by modifying this question.

For a long time I made Windows programs using a Borland C++ 4.5 compiler winning under Windows 98. To make or remove check marks on menu choices I used this macro:
#define OPTION(x,y) case x: y=1-y; CheckMenuItem (mainmenu, x, MF_BYCOMMAND | (y ? MF_CHECKED : MF_UNCHECKED)); goto RD;
where:
x is a menu option.
y is a variable.
RD is a label where are statements to redraw the screen.
in a program called Listitem, and it worked, and the check marks duly appeared and disappeared. But when compiled on my new Windows Vista computer using Visual C++ 2008 free download version, it does not work, and the check marks do not appear. But the check marks do appear when I run on my new computer my program Listitem's old .exe file which was compiled on my old computer.
I tried using SetMenuItemInfo() instead, as recommended in http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms647619.aspx[^], and still the check marks did not appear.
Please what must I do to make the check marks appear?

Can you make a boring win32 program from scratch, and use CheckMenuItem and see it working? Or an MFC program and check / unchecked menus in the command update handlers?
If so, then there's a problem in your code. Are you porting the program straight from borland? Maybe there;s a TMenuDrawer class which no longer works when compiled as a 64 bit program, etc etc.
Start with the first test, and then build up. Hopefully any error will become clear - albeit slowly.
Iain.

I solved it. It is because in Borland C++ I must call the window's top-border menu myself, but Visual C++ does it for me.

Hi,
Can anyone please tell me a macro through that I can check if CLR is enabled or not in a MFC project?

See if this helps.

_MANAGED is defined when compiling to CLR.
For example, you can use something like this to force native
compilation in blocks of code:
#if (_MANAGED == 1)
#pragma unmanaged
#endif

Hi Mark.
Thanks for reply.
Actually I tried that, it works fine for disabling the UnManaged code but it doesn't work for Managed code.
But I got another solution i.e. also need to include another macro along with _MANAGED,
#if (_MANAGED == 1) || (_M_CEE == 1)
printf_s("compiling with /clr\n");
#else
printf_s("compiling without /clr\n");
#endif

Hi,
Is there an easy way to monitor the number of threads which are currently running within an application.
I have an app that creates and (hopefully) kills worker threads during operation and it would be nice to be able to monitor that there isnt a build up of undestroyed threads over a few weeks of operation.
TIA
Tony

The Thread Count column in Windows Task Manager should give you what you need, View, Select Columns... to get the dialog to switch it on. There are other Process Viwers out there, some not far from this posting, that may give you more and better particulars on the activity of those threads. If the code source is available you can of course add your own logging to get whatever info you want.
Nothing is exactly what it seems but everything with seems can be unpicked.

Hi,
Thanks for this. I hadn't realised that "thread count" could be added to the display - thats exactly what I want - and all without having to modify my code!
Thanks again.

Do you want to see threads of your program or you want to make this counter for your program?

Hello!
I have a problem authenticating to an ISA 2006 proxy server using WinHTTP (actually it's a WinHTTP based library, but this doesn't really matter). The proxy has the Digest authentication scheme. I am able to authenticate to the proxy server if I try doing this from within a simple Win32 Console Application. But when I try authenticating from within a Windows service, it just won't work. I copy/pasted the source code from the test application to this service.
I know that the service will never succeed in authenticating to this proxy service, because it runs as SYSTEM, but it doesn't work even if I use the impersonation (ImpersonateLoggedOnUser() etc.)
It works perfectly when the proxy has the Basic authentication scheme set, but when I change it to Digest, I find myself unauthorized to access it...
Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance!

Hi to all.
If anyone know how to get IP address from host name?
I need to establish FTP connection to web server, and I have URL string, from witch I get host name or IP addres (http://111.11.11.111/... or http://host_name/...). Next I need to find out if it is a IP address or host name (I can do that easily by checking for 3 '.' character, or there is a better or safer way?). If it is a host name I need to get IP address from it so I can make FTP connect!?
Thanks for help in advance.
