you could generate a hash value for each file using a cryptographic hash function. then, just compare the hash values. it will always find matches, though it has a possibility of also finding false positives (in case two different files work out to identical hashes), but the odds are low.

If one uses the MD5 hash algorithm then the odds are practical zero.

Why not compute the CRC32 value of each file?
You can find this algorithm Here
If 2 files are identical, they have the same Checksum value (32 bits)

Well firstly just compare files on file size, and then only do an actual contents comparison if the two files have exactly the same size. This should speed it up quite a bit (unless all your files are the same size, that is)

First Sort file list by size (smallest first)
Then for each file, compare against others in list. If size is different, move to next file (do not compare other files in list - no need since you have already sorted by size)
If sizes are the same, then compare contents.
I have already written a little utility to do this myself and I can email you the source if you like.

you should determine the crc or the checlsum of each files and then compare them...

How can I do anything with pdf files? Is it
possible to open the file and read in a row of
pixels?
Please, any response any one can give me will be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Danielle (an overworked graduate student)

A pdf file isn't an image file, so it doesn't contain pixel descriptions, instead it contains descriptions of where to lay stuff out. if you need a line of pixels, then you'll need to load the whole pdf file, render it to a bitmap, and get the line from there

Hi all,
I'm looking to make a list of common code bugs so I can toss the basic code into a c++ console app and compile so I can practice debugging.
Please let me know if this is a stupid idea.

You don't have to go to all that bother. Just try writing an app of a basic level of complexity and the errors will come on their own. Then you can do all the debugging you want.

Hey Guys
I have created a list view derived class and have passed it in to a Document Template and it displays as a plain white window. I was wondering how do i actually get the list ctrl to appear inside it.

What i want to do is just have a standard list control ie CListctrl displayed inside this CListView. But i can't get the list view to display how to i create the list view inside the window.

You need to superclass it.
