MIX08 to debut the first ever MIX UX Track which is 3 days of solid content dedicated to creatives / designers. Lou Carbone, David Armano, Dan Roam, Kim Lenox and others will speak. In conjunction with Adaptive Path, the User Experience track is just one of the many great reasons for all types of designers and creative professionals to attend MIX this year. http://visitmix.com/2008/mixux.aspx
The deadline for this year’s CSS contest, RESTYLE, has been extended. Folks can still restyle the MIX08 Homepage and win a pass to MIX08, 3 nights at the Venetian, $$ and more, more, more! http://visitmix.com/2008/restyle/
Have you been listening to The Signal? Each week a new episode debuts featuring a speaker or MIX crew member talking about some of the upcoming coolness happening at MIX08. Listen to their interviews with Molly Holzschlag, Kip Kniskern, Jonathan Snook and others as we countdown to Vegas. http://visitmix.com/blogs/TheSignal/
Perhaps you remembered last year’s MIX, in which we featured Flotzam, a WPF screensaver mash-up that showed MIX07 feeds from Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and blogs. Well, we are doing it again this year with a twist: we are running a contest and will feature community created skins of the application on the big screen and on the screensavers of the computers available to attendees at the show. The best skin will win an XBOX 360. Entering the contest is easy: everything you need to know can be found here http://www.visitmix.com/blogs/News/403/ including links to screencasts and instructions that show how easy it is to do the restyle.
MIX08 on March 5-7 in Vegas- (Other than the early bird price was extended until the end of January so there is still time to register at a 20% discount!)

I have a gridview with Select buttons in the first column. There are lots of rows, and I have set up CSS to freeze the header row in place as the table is scrolled (using position:relative). I also have CSS set up for the hover event of the button which highlights the button with a nice black border. The problem arises when the containing div is scrolled. If the cursor is moved over any one of the buttons, the header row suddenly jumps to it's scrolled position (a lot of the time this is too far north and it just disappears). Scroll back to the top of the grid, and hover again - it's back! Any diagnoses and possible cures greatly appreciated.
p.s. Yes I have considered creating a custom control inheriting from Gridview, but this seems like a lot of work when the solution I currently have is so close to perfect...

<update>
I got around this problem for the prototype demo by not having enough data to require scrolling! For the production version I will probably create a custom gridview inheriting from Gridview, or dolly up a Repeater with some sorting capabilities. However, I'm still curious as to what would cause this. I assume it's client side (IE only - not tried in FF) as I don't see any postback or page refresh.
Any thoughts?

Hi,
This can simply be achieved with the following code:
<br />
function updateTime()<br />
{<br />
var timeNow = new Date();<br />
document.getElementById('testLabel').innerHTML = timeNow.toTimeString();<br />
}<br />
<br />
setInterval("updateTime();", 500);<br />
The setInterval function will run every 500 milliseconds (1/2 a second) to update the label with the current date / time.

Ok, I just created a page which shows some columns from .mdb file and it's working perfectly, the data is loaded and the grid looks fine, but when I click on the Edit or Delete links, I get this..

The error message makes it pretty obvious. It's a HTTP 404 error. Is the resource '/WebSite2/GridView1' actually available?

SqlTableProfileProvider is a custom provider (written by someone at Microsoft I think), right? Do you have a file/project reference to this provider set up in your project?

Now I am working with webservices.But now we are facing a problem while calling a method in webservice asynchronously from a web page.ie.when the webmethod computes the result it will not get reflected in the webform, because the page would be rendered to the client while the method processing data.Please help me to avoid this problem without using polling...........
|
|
|
|
|
Is the web service call being made as the page is loading or is it being initiated by a user action on the page?
Clean code is the key to happiness.

When you make the async call you should get an IAsyncResult you need to hang onto.
Then at the end of your.. say OnPreRender handler you grab the IAsyncResult and wait for it to finish - say myIAsyncResult.AsyncWaitHandle.WaitOne();
Now you have your data back, you have a party. Or update the fields.

Hi,
This is some rather twisted MS logic. The whole idea of the UpdatePanel is to allow only parts of the web form to be posted back in order to provide AJAX functionality. However, the default behaviour of the UpdatePanel is to post the whole page back, rather than just the controls contained within it! To correct this you will need to set the following property against the UpdatePanel:
UpdateMode="Conditional"
Hope this helps...
Clean code is the key to happiness.
|
|
|
|
|
I have set it to conditional however it stll updates the whole page.
|
|
|

Having spent a fair bit of time playing around and implementing AJAX solutions, I would recommend that you do not use the UpdatePanel. Even when the UpdatePanel is working as it should, the whole of the page is still posted back, which basically defeats the object of a partial postback. Tell tell signs of this can be seen with drop down lists, that even if outside of the UpdatePanel, will flicker on partial postback.
My preferred route for handling AJAX type functionality is through the use of the ScriptManager control's service references. Registreing a local web service through the ScriptManager control creates a JS web service proxy object that is very simple to use. It uses JSON encoding which means the web service response object can be easily accessed to extract the required data, and web service methods can be called as easily as Service.Method(params). You can also set up default success and failure functiojns to handle all web method responses.
Check out the following which gives somke examples of how to implement the above:

I am working on a Home Improvements website and I want users to be able to submit articles to my site. Does CodeProject use their own custom code for article submission or do they use a third party? Can anyone recommend a good solution to use. Thanks in advance.
